The Second Stage in LigaA just started. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with defeat of the leader, derby games and favorites losing the games.

Top ranked Penarol (11-3) recorded its third loss in Mar del Plata on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by seventh ranked Quimsa (8-7) 76-71. It ended at the same time the 12-game winning streak of Penarol. The guests trailed by 7 points after three quarters before their 25-13 charge, which allowed them to win the game. The former international forward Sebastian Vega (200-F-88) fired 18 points and 5 steals for the winners. American center James Williams (204-79, college: Brown Mackie, agency: Dream Team Management) chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds. International power forward Leonardo Gutierrez (201-78) produced 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Quimsa have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain seventh place with 8-7 record. Defending champion Penarol still keeps top position with three games lost. Quimsa are looking forward to face Wuber-Est.Bahia (#8) in Bahia Blanca in the next round. Penarol will play at home against Libertad Sunchales (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked 9 de Julio (3-11) against seventh ranked La Union (3-12) on Friday night. Visiting 9 de Julio was defeated by La Union in a tough game in Formosa 79-84. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of 9 de Julio. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Gregory Lewis (200-78, college: Winthrop, agency: Dream Team Management) who helped to win the game recording 23 points and 6 rebounds. Ruben Wolkowyski contributed with 17 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners. Naturalized Italian forward Mariano Garcia (201-86) answered with 25 points for 9 de Julio. Despite that victory La Union went down to sixteenth position due to points difference. 9 de Julio at the other side dropped to the fifteenth place with 11 games lost. La Union will play against higher ranked Argentino (#6) in Junin in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. 9 de Julio will play on the road against Union Progresista (#14) in Villa Angela and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Comodoro R. was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Boca Juniors (5-8) played at the court of sixth ranked GECR Indalo (7-7). GECR Indalo managed to secure a 5-point victory 85-80 on Friday. Kahiem Seawright stepped up with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. At the losing side John DeGroat responded with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Boca Juniors' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Despite that victory GECR Indalo went down to ninth position due to points difference. Loser Boca Juniors dropped to the twelfth place with eight games lost. GECR Indalo will meet at home Obras (#13) in the next round. Boca Juniors' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Buenos Aires to the arena Lanus.
A very interesting game took place in Bahia Blanca. It ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 7th ranked Quimsa (8-7) to tenth ranked Wuber-Est.Bahia (7-6) 72-70 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Quimsa. LaVell Blanchard nailed 16 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. Quimsa's coach Fabio Demti tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Wuber-Est.Bahia moved-up to eighth place. Quimsa at the other side keeps the seventh position with seven games lost. Wuber-Est.Bahia's next round opponent will be again higher ranked Quimsa (#7) in Santiado Estero and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
We should mention about the upset which took place in La Banda, where 13th ranked Sionista (7-8) lost to sixteenth ranked Olimpico de La Banda (11-4) in a road game 70-79 on Friday. Cedric McGowan fired 14 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Sionista's coach Sebastian Svetliza let to play eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Olimpico de La Banda moved-up to second place. Sionista lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the tenth position with eight games lost. Olimpico de La Banda will face Regatas Corrientes (#5) at home in the next round. Sionista will play against Atenas (#11) in Cordoba and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Other games of round 1 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Obras was defeated by Lanus in Buenos Aires 80-70. Union Progr. was beaten by Argentino at home 66-75. Regatas C. won against Atenas on the opponent's court 91-83.

There was no surprise in Buenos Aires where 13th ranked Obras (4-9) was defeated by fourth ranked Lanus (9-5) 80-70 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 9-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 80-70. Naturalized Italian swingman Adrian Boccia (195-82) fired 15 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. American center Robert Battle (204-81, college: Drexel, agency: Dream Team Management) chipped in 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Uruguayan guard Martin Osimani (194-81, college: Duquesne) produced 22 points and 5 assists and international power forward Juan Gutierrez (205-83) added 12 points and 8 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Lanus maintains fourth place with 9-5 record, which they share with Regatas C. Obras lost ninth consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth position with nine games lost. Lanus' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Buenos Aires Boca Juniors.

No shocking result in a game in Villa Angela where sixth ranked Argentino (9-6) defeated 14th ranked Union Progresista (4-9) 75-66 on Friday. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Argentino made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. The former international center Axel Weigand (200-85) fired 15 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Fernando Funes (192-83) chipped in 19 points. British-American forward Darren Phillip (201-78, college: Fairfield) produced a double-double by scoring 32 points and 14 rebounds and point guard Victor Hugo Cajal (179-80, agency: Dream Team Management) added 3 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists respectively for lost side. Newly promoted Argentino maintains sixth place with 9-6 record. Union Progresista at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the thirteenth position with nine games lost. Argentino will face bottom-ranked La Union (#16) in Formosa in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Atenas - Regatas C. 83-91

Very expected game in Cordoba where 11th ranked Atenas (6-9) was defeated by fifth ranked Regatas Corrientes (9-5) 91-83 on Friday. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 24-14. But Atenas won third quarter 31-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Regatas Corrientes dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Atenas' 32. They outrebounded Atenas 38-26 including a 28-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. Regatas Corrientes looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by Atenas' players. International power forward Nicolas Romano (199-87) fired 21 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. The former international swingman Paolo Quinteros (190-79) chipped in 14 points and 8 assists. Four Regatas Corrientes players scored in double figures. Regatas Corrientes' coach Nicolas Casalanguida used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international point guard Bruno Labaque (180-77, agency: Interperformances) produced 29 points and 4 assists and power forward Mariano Fierro (201-86) added 14 points and 9 rebounds respectively for lost side. Regatas Corrientes moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Lanus. Loser Atenas keeps the eleventh position with nine games lost. Regatas Corrientes will face league's second-placed Olimpico de La Banda on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. The game in Comodoro R. was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Boca Juniors (5-8) played at the court of sixth ranked GECR Indalo (7-7). GECR Indalo managed to secure a 5-point victory 85-80 on Friday. Boca Juniors trailed by 11 points at halftime and as many as 15 after three quarters before a 30-20 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 80-85 at the end of the game. GECR Indalo made 19-of-21 free shots (90.5 percent) during the game. American power forward Kahiem Seawright (203-86, college: Rhode Island, agency: Edge Sports) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners and his fellow American import guard David Jackson (196-82, college: Penn St.) chipped in 19 points and 4 assists. At the losing side American forward John DeGroat (198-85, college: Pittsburgh) responded with 21 points and 7 rebounds and American-Puerto Rican center Daniel Santiago (216-76, college: N.Mexico, agency: Priority Sports) scored 17 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Boca Juniors' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help.
