LigaA Round 2 (Second Stage): Olimpico de La Banda loses to Regatas Corrientes - Nov 5, 2012

There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Second Stage in LigaA. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games.

The most important game in the last round took place in La Banda between second ranked Olimpico de La Banda (11-5) and fifth ranked Regatas Corrientes (10-5) on Sunday night. Olimpico de La Banda was defeated by Regatas Corrientes at home 78-89. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Olimpico de La Banda. The game was mostly controlled by Regatas Corrientes. Olimpico de La Banda managed to win third quarter 21-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Regatas Corrientes shot 60.3 percent from the field. It was a great shooting night for Regatas Corrientes especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.0 percentage. American forward Tony Washam (200-82, college: St.Vincent) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points and 8 rebounds. The former international forward Federico Kammerichs (202-80) contributed with 19 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners. American center Sam Clancy (202-80, college: USC) replied with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 11 rebounds for Olimpico de La Banda. Regatas Corrientes have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Lanus. Olimpico de La Banda at the other side keeps the second position with five games lost. Regatas Corrientes is looking forward to face league's leader Penarol in Mar del Plata in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Olimpico de La Banda will play on the road against 9 de Julio in Rio Tercero and is hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Cordoba. Eleventh ranked Atenas (7-9) saved a 1-point victory at home edging 10th ranked Sionista (7-9) 83-82 in the game for the tenth place. The former international swingman Matias Lescano (196-79) scored 21 points and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Bruno Labaque chipped in 12 points and 4 assists during the contest. Atenas' coach Alejandro Lotterio allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. International point guard Luis Cequeira (180-85) responded with 19 points and 7 assists. Atenas moved-up to tenth place, which they share with defeated Sionista. Sionista lost fourth consecutive game. Atenas will play against higher ranked Argentino (#6) in Junin in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Sionista will play at home against Wuber-Est.Bahia (#9) in Bahia Blanca and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Formosa between La Union and Argentino. Sixteenth ranked La Union (4-12) got a very close home victory over higher ranked Argentino (9-7). La Union managed to escape with a 2-point win 77-75 on Sunday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. Gregory Lewis notched 28 points to lead the effort. Even 6 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists by Kavon Lytch did not help to save the game for Argentino. La Union moved-up to fifteenth place. Newly promoted Argentino keeps the sixth position with seven games lost. La Union will meet higher ranked Boca Juniors (#12) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Argentino will play against Atenas (#11) in Cordoba and hope to secure a win.
The game between ninth ranked GECR Indalo (8-7) and 13th ranked Obras (4-10) in Comodoro R. ended with biggest points difference. GECR Indalo outscored guests from Buenos Aires 112-92. The best player for the winners was Jason Robinson who scored 24 points and 6 rebounds. GECR Indalo moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Quimsa. Obras lost tenth consecutive game. They dropped to the fourteenth position with ten games lost. GECR Indalo's next round opponent will be higher ranked Libertad Sunchales (#3) on the road and it may be quite challenging game. Obras will play against Union Progresista (#13) in Villa Angela and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 2 9 de Julio was smashed by Union Progr. on the road 85-66.
The most impressive performance of 2nd round was 39 points (!!!) and 11 rebounds by Darren Phillip of Union Progr..


Lanus - Boca Jrs 77-65

Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Buenos Aires: Lanus (#4) and Boca Juniors (#12). Lanus (10-5) won against visiting Boca Juniors (5-9) 77-65. The game was mostly controlled by Lanus. Boca Juniors was better in third quarter 25-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Boca Juniors was plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. American forward William McFarlan (201-76, college: St.Thomas Aquinas, agency: Dream Team Management) orchestrated the victory by scoring 13 points and 8 rebounds. The other American import center Robert Battle (204-81, college: Drexel, agency: Dream Team Management) contributed with 14 points for the winners. Five Lanus players scored in double figures. Center Alejandro Diez (201-87) replied with 15 points and 8 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and the former international point guard Maximiliano Stanic (178-78, agency: Players Group) added 15 points in the effort for Boca Juniors. Lanus maintains fourth position with 10-5 record, which they share with Regatas C. Loser Boca Juniors keeps the twelfth place with nine games lost. Lanus will face Quimsa (#8) in Santiado Estero in the next round. Boca Juniors will play at home against La Union (#15) in Formosa.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with fourteenth ranked Union Progresista's (5-9) home victory over bottom-ranked 9 de Julio (3-12) in Villa Angela 85-66 on Sunday. The hosts trailed by 9 points at the halftime before their 54-26 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. 9 de Julio was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. British-American forward Darren Phillip (201-78, college: Fairfield) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 11 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). American forward Adrian Moss (203-81, college: Florida) contributed with 10 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Union Progresista's coach Jorge Lobera used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Edward Nelson (203-82, college: Connecticut, agency: Dream Team Management) replied with 24 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) and forward Enzo Ruiz (193-88, agency: Dream Team Management) added 11 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for 9 de Julio. Union Progresista moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Boca Jrs. Loser 9 de Julio dropped to the bottom position with 12 games lost. Union Progresista will face Obras (#14) in Buenos Aires in the next round. 9 de Julio will play at home against the league's second-placed Olimpico de La Banda and will have a slim chance for a victory.
