34-year old forward Darren Phillip (201-F-78) put on an amazing game in the last round for Union Progr. and receives a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 2 (Second Stage). He had a double-double of 39 points and 11 rebounds, while his team crushed 9 de Julio (#16, 3-12) with 19-point margin 85-66. Each game in Second Stage is important. but the teams lost the distance to the top of the standings. Union Progr. is placed at 13th position in Argentinian league. Union Progr. is rather a weak team placed in lower part in the standings. But it was their 9th lost game this season out of 14 games. In the team's last game Phillip had a remarkable 81.8% from 2-point range. He turned to be Union Progr.'s top player in his first season with the team. Fairfield University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Phillip is league's best scorer averaging so far 20.2ppg and leads league in rebounds with 13.2rpg. Phillip is in league's top in and averages solid 53.8% FGP.
Second best performed player last round was Juan Gutierrez (205-F/C-83) of Obras. He is naturalized Italian forward in his 3rd season at Obras. In the last game Gutierrez recorded impressive 29 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Bad luck as Obras lost that game 92-112 to GECR Indalo (8-7). The Second Stage is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next round. Gutierrez is one of the most experienced players at Obras and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 19.1ppg (#2). He also registered 9.1 boards per game.
Third place about best performers goes to center Sam Clancy (202-C-80) of league's second-best Olimpico LB. Clancy scored 25 points and grabbed eleven rebounds (!!!). Despite Clancy's great performance Olimpico LB lost 78-89 to Regatas C. (#5, 10-5). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Olimpico LB needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 11 victories and 5 lost games. Clancy has a great season in Argentina. After 16 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 10.6rpg (2nd best). He also has 2.0bpg and FGP: 60.3%.
Other top performing players last week: 4. Tony Washam (200-F-82) of Regatas C. - 22 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists 5. Jason Robinson (196-F-80) of GECR Indalo - 24 points and 6 rebounds 6. Alejandro Konsztadt (191-G-89) of Obras - 25 points and 5 rebounds 7. Edward Nelson (203-F-82) of 9 de Julio - 24 points and 6 rebounds 8. Federico Kammerichs (202-F-80) of Regatas C. - 19 points and 9 rebounds 9. Gregory Lewis (200-F-78) of La Union - 28 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists 10. Ruben Wolkowyski (208-C-73) of La Union - 12 points and 11 rebounds
The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
