The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games.

The most exciting game of round 5 in the LigaA took place in Cordoba. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 5th ranked Atenas (1-4) to second ranked Instituto (3-1) 88-86 on Monday evening. Instituto dominated down low during the game scoring 42 of its points in the paint compared to Atenas' 22 and made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American forward Dwayne Davis (196-89, college: S.Mississippi) who scored 30 points. The former international point guard Santiago Scala (186-91) chipped in 13 points and 5 assists. American guard Donald Sims (185-87, college: Appalachian St., agency: Pensack Sports) produced 25 points and 5 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the hosts. Atenas' coach Nicolas Casalanguida rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Instituto have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of Group B leader. Atenas lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with four games lost. Instituto are looking forward to face Olimpico de La Banda (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Atenas will have a break next round.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Buenos Aires: Obras Basket (#3) and Boca Juniors (#4). Boca Juniors was defeated at home 70-77 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. American forward Maurice Kemp (203-91, college: E.Carolina, agency: Duran International) orchestrated the victory by scoring 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Pedro Barral contributed with 16 points and 4 assists for the winners. Ghanian-British forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning (205-88, college: Washington) answered with 22 points and 7 rebounds for Boca Juniors. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Obras Basket (3-2) moved-up to second place in Group C, which they share with Ferrocarril. Boca Juniors at the other side keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Obras Basket will play against league's leader San Lorenzo in Almagra in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Boca Juniors will play on the road against Hispano Am. in Rio Gallegos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Quimsa (2-2) against fourth ranked Olimpico de La Banda (2-2) on Sunday night. Host Quimsa was defeated by Olimpico de La Banda in a tough game in Santiado del Estero 70-74. Rodney Green stepped up and scored 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Novar Gadson responded with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Olimpico de La Banda moved-up to third place in Group B, which they share with defeated Quimsa. Olimpico de La Banda will meet league's leader Instituto in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Quimsa will play against the league's second-placed Salta Basket and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked GECR Indalo (3-3) against fifth ranked Argentino (2-3) on Monday night. Visiting GECR Indalo was crushed by Argentino in Junin 86-64. Luciano Massarelli nailed 25 points, 5 assists and 5 steals for the winning side. Argentino maintains fifth place in Group D with 2-3 record. GECR Indalo at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. Argentino's next round opponent will be higher ranked Penarol (#3) in Mar del Plata and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Formosa. Second ranked La Union faced 3rd placed Regatas Corrientes. Host La Union (3-2) defeated guests from Corrientes (2-3) 96-91. The best player for the winners was Anthony Young who scored 25 points. La Union maintains second place in Group A with 3-2 record despite having the same number of points like the leader Quilmes MP. Loser Regatas Corrientes keeps the third position with three games lost. La Union will face Estudiantes C. (#4) in Concordia in the next round.

Other games of round 5 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
In Group A Estudiantes C. was defeated by La Union in Formosa 79-70.
In Group C Ferrocarril lost to defending champion San Lorenzo at home 54-94.
In Group D GECR Indalo won against Penarol on the opponent's court 99-88.

La Union - Regatas C. 96-91

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Formosa. Second ranked La Union faced 3rd placed Regatas Corrientes. Host La Union (3-2) defeated guests from Corrientes (2-3) 96-91. La Union outrebounded Regatas Corrientes 43-27 including 16 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was American forward Anthony Young (200-89, college: Ky Wesleyan) who scored 25 points. His fellow American import power forward Chaz Crawford (207-84, college: Drexel, agency: DTMones) chipped in 7 points and 17 rebounds. The former international Paolo Quinteros (188-79) produced 29 points (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) and American guard Alex Harris (196-86, agency: Diamond Sports) added 17 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. La Union maintains second place in Group A with 3-2 record despite having the same number of points like the leader Quilmes MP. Loser Regatas Corrientes keeps the third position with three games lost. La Union will face Estudiantes C. (#4) in Concordia in the next round.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 3rd placed Estudiantes C.'s (2-4) road loss to second ranked La Union (3-2) 70-79 on Friday. La Union made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was the former international swingman Alexis Elsener (196-88) who scored 19 points and 8 rebounds. American forward Anthony Young (200-89, college: Ky Wesleyan) chipped in 25 points. Elsener is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Italian center Emilio Dominguez (202-87) produced 15 points and 8 rebounds and American swingman Anthony Smith (195-86, college: Liberty, agency: Interperformances) added 11 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the guests. Estudiantes C.'s coach Lucas Victoriano tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. La Union maintains second place in Group A with 3-2 record despite having the same number of points like the leader Quilmes MP. Loser Estudiantes C. dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. La Union will face again Estudiantes C. (#4) in Concordia in the next round. Estudiantes C. will play at home against the league's leader San Martin Corrientes and hope to win that game.

They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Ferrocarril's players. The best player for the winners was American-Jordanian Dar Tucker (193-88, college: De Paul) who scored 23 points (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field). The former international point guard Nicolas Aguirre (188-88) chipped in 8 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. American Walter Baxley (193-84, college: Mars Hill) produced 17 points and center Jose-Ignacio Alessio (203-87) added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. San Lorenzo have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place in Group C with 5-0 record. Loser Ferrocarril keeps the second position with two games lost. San Lorenzo will face league's second-placed Obras Basket in Buenos Aires in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week.

Very important is a road loss of second ranked GECR Indalo (3-3) against fifth ranked Argentino (2-3) on Monday night. Visiting GECR Indalo was crushed by Argentino in Junin 86-64. Argentino dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to GECR Indalo's 38. Guard Luciano Massarelli (183-93) nailed 25 points, 5 assists and 5 steals for the winning side and naturalized Italian swingman Juan Cangelosi (196-81) accounted for 15 points and 6 rebounds. Five Argentino players scored in double figures. Juan-Manuel Riveiro (191-85) came up with 18 points and American forward Shaquille Johnson (190-90, college: Marshall) added 14 points respectively for GECR Indalo in the defeat. Argentino maintains fifth place in Group D with 2-3 record. GECR Indalo at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. Argentino's next round opponent will be higher ranked Penarol (#3) in Mar del Plata and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.

GECR Indalo looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was American forward Shaquille Johnson (190-90, college: Marshall) who scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Center Diego Romero (206-82, college: Florida St.) chipped in 22 points and 5 rebounds. The former international point guard Nicolas Gianella (186-78) produced 20 points and 6 assists and American center Ricardo Glenn (202-90, college: USC Upstate, agency: HMS) added 15 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Penarol's coach Marcelo Macias tested eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. GECR Indalo maintains second place in Group D with 3-3 record having just one point less than leader Quilmes MP. Loser Penarol dropped to the third position with two games lost. GECR Indalo will have a break next round. Penarol will play on the road against Argentino in Junin and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
