Over the past two weeks, the Belize Basketball Federation (BBF) has been holding tryouts to select Under 12 male players to represent Belize in a regional tournament to be held in December in Guatemala. Over 50 players from across the country have attended workout sessions and the final team will be selected by early next week to continue preparation. Belize has not participated in regional or international basketball competition at this youth level in many years and the BBF is excited at the prospects for this tournament. Youth development through the sport of basketball is at the cornerstone of the BBFs strategic vision and a structured youth system for male and female players will be launched early next year. The BBF would like to thank parents, some of whom travel from the districts to support participation, the primary schools which assisted with recruitment and dissemination of information, and the sponsors who have already committed to the project. There is still more work to be done to make the project a reality and the BBF will keep the public updated over the next few weeks.

Tigersharks Were Victorious Over the UB Jaguars!!!
Last Sunday evening the BBA tournament continued its regular season with two games. In the first match, the Belmopan Energy (1-2) bombed the Perk Up Hawks (0-3) by a score of 80 62. Probably what the Hawks are lacking is miscibility among their players and a bench that can contribute with points. BNE so far has not shown to be the team we know characterizes them, a team that puts up a fight especially when they are down and their love for the shirt.

Last Thursdays games played in the regular season of the BBA Tournament saw the Tigersharks (3-0) going up a very indiscipline and probably the weakest team in the tournament; the Eagles (0-2), while the UB Black Jaguars squared off in the main event against the Belize Bank Bulldogs. In the first game, the Tigersharks just played around with the Eagles as a cat does before killing its prey.

In the first game, the Tigersharks just played around with the Eagles as a cat does before killing its prey. They beat the Eagles 84 64 and the only good thing worth mentioning is the fact that Kurt Burgess (-F/C) was on fire for the Tigersharks ending with an astonishing double double night, 34 pts, 26 rebs and 2 blocks, Lester Cadle (188-G-80) contributed 21 pts, Eugene Jex also with double figures, 17 pts, 10 rebs. In a losing effort, Lindy Gill finished with 17 pts and Arton Hanson with 13 pts. In the main event, The Belize Bank Bulldogs (1-1) stepped on the arena probably over confident that they would simply walk over the University of Belize (3-0) after their last overwhelming victory they had in their opening night against the Eagles. From the get go the Jaguars pressed the Bulldogs, played a very good defensive game and were very assertive going up the hoop. In the end they simply blasted the Bulldogs by 103 83. For UB, Lennox Bowman (180-G) ended with 20 pts, Jorett Jones 18 pts, 1 block, Lindsberg Graham (178-G-83), in double figures, 15 pts, 10 rebs, Winston Pratt also in double figures, 13 pts, 12 rebs, Farron Lauriano 11 pts, 6 rebs and Travis Lennon with 10 pts, 6 rebs. In a losing effort, Darwin Leslie (191-F/G-81) finished with 22 pts, 8 rebs, Greg Rudon (180-G) 17 pts and Tyrone Edwards (186-G, college: Hillsdale) 10 pts.
Contrary to BNE Energy, the University of Belize has good coaching and discipline with their players. As a result, they normally have a winning record in tournaments. For this tournament it is not an exception, they have a 2 0 record after humiliating the Perk Up Hawks by 77 51. It seemed as if the Hawks in the beginning of the quarter had too much respect of the UB Jaguars and forgot that in basketball you cannot play with this kind of mentality.

By the time they realize this, the lead was already huge and hard to make a come back from. UB was lead by Winston Pratt with 20 pts, 4 assists, Travis Lennon with 13 pts, 6 rebs and Lennox Bowman (180-G) with 11 pts. In a losing effort Jamir Enriquez finished with 18 pts and Erwin Robinson 10 pts.
Last Friday night at the UB Gym, the San Pedro Tigersharks (1-0) schooled the BNE Energy (0-2)by a score of 66 80. It appears that the Belmopan Energy lacks a coach who can actually lead, direct and make changes for the team. The team itself has good players but what is lacking is the ability of someone to take the reigns of the team. At times, the Energy seemed to be playing as a high school team, giving away innocent turnovers and missing give away shots.

They were lead by Douglas Penland (191-G/F-75) with 24 pts, Kurt Burgess (-F/C) with double figures, 18 pts, 13 rebs, and 2 blocks, and Ian Lennon 14 pts. In a losing effort, Aubrey Lopez (188-G) finished with 26 pts, 8 rebs and 5 assist, Jason Daly (183-G) with 13 pts and Evan Salazar (201-F/C) 8 pts and an incredible 25 rebs.
