Brazil fell short of win against Germany in the quarterfinal of Olympic Games Qualifying tournament and failed to deliver needed result. Germany will face Croatia in the semifinal of the event yesterday. The teams kept it close in the opening stanza with Germany going up 14:13 at the end. The Latin American powerhouse surged ahead 21:17 early in the second period and things looked hopeful for them at the moment. But then Dirk Nowitzki (211-F-78) and Co took over. German team exploded with 28:5 rally to crown the second frame and built a massive 45:26 advantage at halftime. Germany mounted the pressure and stretched the gap to 20+ points in the third frame. The Europeans extended the damage to 27 points but Brazil refused to surrender. They cut the deficit to 11 points late in regulation bit Chris Kaman (213-C-82, college: Cent.Michigan) and Pascal Roller (180-G-76) allowed Germany to secure the victory in the dying moments. Dirk Nowitzki led the action with 20 points, 7 boards and 5 assists for Germany. Pascal Roller came up with 15 points all coming from beyond the arc, while Chris Kaman produced 12 points and 14 rebounds in a win. Tiago Splitter (211-C/F-85, agency: Interperformances) had 16 points and 6 rebounds for Brazil. Marcelinho Machado (200-F/G-75, agency: Interperformances) secured 11 points in a losing effort. Germany outrebounded their opponents 36:26 and held Brazil to 39% from the field. German players looked deadly from charity stripe knocking down 93% of freebies.

The participating sides will be Cameroon, Caper Verde, Puerto Rico, Canada, Brazil, Korea, Lebanon, Greece, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia and New Zealand.

The twelve teams will struggle for three men's berths for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games were divided into four groups with 3 teams in each. Group A will consist of Brazil, Greece and Lebanon. Cape Verde, Germany and New Zealand made up Group B, while Canada, Korea and Slovenia will play in Group C. Cameroon, Croatia and Puerto Rico were sent to Group D. The teams placed first and second in each group will advance to the Quarter-Finals. Brazil will start their campaign tomorrow with Lebanon. The latter will open their tournament today with the hosts, Greece. The roster of the Brazilian team is published already in our website and most of you know the missing gaps in it. Leandrinho Barbosa (190-G-82) is definetely out of the Brazil squad for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens after being told by doctors to rest his knee. Brazilian player had a great season in Phoenix Suns. Leandrinho Barbosa will be replaced by Fulvio De Assis (187-G-81), who is already training with the national team. The South Americans are in Group A with Greece and Lebanon, and will attempt to advance to the quarter-finals where Germany, New Zealand or Cape Verde would await them. Leandrinho Barbosa played for Brazil at the FIBA World Championship in Japan, and the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas. Earlier Anderson Varejao and Nene Hilario's sad news were mentioned to the team. The Moncho Monsalve 's squad however will do the best in order to be a good representative of the continent in the group.

Australian National team finally got things going the right way as they defeated Brazil on the last day of the Acropolis tournament. Chris Anstey (213-C-75) nailed 24 points to carry the Boomers past Brazil yesterday. Brad Newley (199-G-85) added 17 points, while Patrick Mills (178-G-88) chipped in 10 for the winners. Brazilian team dominated the start of the game as they clinched a 28:21 lead after the first frame.
