Lakers solve Jackson jinx; secure postseason top seed - Jul 10, 2010

IT'S BEEN A WHILE coming, but the Lumber Company Lakers have finally beaten their nemeses.

Even better, they might not have to worry about beating them again.

Andre Lockhart had 14 of his 18 points in the second half, including Lakers' last six of the contest, as basketball's Premier League leaders secured the postseason's top seed and their only win this season against British American Insurance Jackson in Thursday's 68-65 nail-bitter at the Wildey Gym.

The win - Lakers' 13th in 14 league games - ended a string of three straight losses to their tormentors, but more importantly, drops Jackson (9-5) into fifth place and out of a potential first-round matchup.

For now at least.

Jackson, whose winning streak against the league leaders dates back to last season, can still make the playoffs if they win their final two fixtures, which include the pivotal season finale versus fourth-placed Pinelands (10-4).

And they can only blame themselves for this dire must-win situation, after missing several easy scoring opportunities in the fourth against a team that Jackson routed by 20 just three weeks ago.

But the overseas-based Lockhart wasnt on hand for that semi-final knockout drubbing, and he proved to be the difference this time, scoring the game's last four points at the line to help Lakers overcome a two-point deficit (64-62) in the final minute.

Playing in his first game of the season, the national playmaker was also responsible for locking the scores prior to his decisive free throws, exploding towards the ring before pumping to avoid the challenge of six-foot-ten centre Pearson Griffith.

This was after Griffith had given Jackson that initial advantage on a nifty spin move in the post, following a crucial Javid Beckles three on their previous possession.

The lead wouldve been more had Peter Alleyne converted two prior driving lay-ups, and Julian Grant also left behind some change when he split his free throw attempts after Lockhart's game-tying basket.

However, Jackson grabbed the ensuing offensive board, only for Beckles to airball his subsequent baseline jumper, forcing Alleyne to foul a streaking Lockhart in transition the other way.

Lockhart's two free throws then gave Lakers the lead (66-65) with seven seconds remaining, before a questionable no-call led to Alleyne turning over the ball on the next inbounds play.

Another two Lockhart free throws soon followed and Jackson didn't get off a potential game-tying three-pointer before time expired.

Lakers shooting guard Keefe Birkett led all scorers with 20 points while Alleyne had a team high 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Earlier, Kirk Patrick and Decarlo Skeete led five Pinelands players in double digits with 14 points as the Pine moved a game ahead of Jackson for the fourth and final playoff spot by thrashing Nicholls Baking Cougars 80-63.
