Rather expected game when 4th placed Abejas (8-10) lost to first ranked Soles (12-6) in Mexicali 80-86 on Saturday. Soles made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. It was an exceptional evening for American Joe Lawson (201-92, college: Indianapolis, agency: Inception Sports) who led the winners and scored 21 points and 4 assists. Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: BeoBasket) accounted for 11 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. Lawson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American point guard Darrin Dorsey (188-87, college: DWU) came up with 19 points and 6 assists and the other American import guard Michael Smith (193-95, college: CBU) added 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for Abejas in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Soles maintains first place with 12-6 record. Abejas lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the third position with ten games lost. They share it with Plateros. Soles will meet Panteras (#5) in the next round. Abejas will play against Astros and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
