Regular Season Round 5: Marlins - Opico 61-57

Rather predictable result when eleventh ranked Marlins (1-3) won against at home bottom-ranked Opico (0-5) 61-57 on Saturday. Marlins forced 28 Opico turnovers. Strangely Opico outrebounded Marlins 74-48 including a 33-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Marlins made 7 blocks. Forward Valeria Cornejo (169-7) nailed a double-double by scoring 16 points and 15 rebounds for the winning side and guard Eloisa Melara (159-8) accounted for 14 points and 11 rebounds. Four Marlins players scored in double figures. Marlins' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Center Karla Escobar (175-93) came up with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 19 rebounds and Monica Canjura (167-2) added 17 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Opico in the defeat. Marlins left bottom position moving up to ninth place. It was Opico's fifth loss in a row. They still close the standings with five games lost. Marlins will meet league's leader San Marcos on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Opico will have a break next round.
