Regular Season Round 18: Arecibo - Ponce 102-90
Date: June 2, 2022
Rather expected game in Arecibo where one of their biggest challengers Leones (14-9) were defeated by first ranked Capitanes (14-8) 102-90 on Thursday. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was Nigerian-American power forward Chinemelu Elonu (206-1987, college: Texas A&M) who had a double-double by scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Dominican Victor Liz (193-1986) chipped in 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Capitanes players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international power forward Jordan Murphy (200-1997, college: Minnesota) who recorded 28 points and 5 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) and the former international guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991, agency: Interperformances) added 19 points and 5 assists respectively. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Capitanes have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 14-8 record. Loser Leones dropped to the second place with nine games lost. They share the position with Quebradillas. Capitanes will meet at home Grises (#6) in the next round where they are favorite. Leones will play against Brujos (#6) in Guayama and hope to secure a win.
