Gearing up for the New Year and a brand new season in Belize, the NEBL hosted its annual Preseason tournament featuring the best of the country's Elite basketball squads. Five of the eight teams registered to participate in this year's championships were ready to showcase their talents as their teams went head to head in contention for another Elite Championship!
The Cayo Western Ballaz, Independence Thunderbolts, Belmopan Bandits, and the Dangriga Warriors, were all featured participants in the contest, but the 2-time reigning NEBL Champion San Pedro Tiger Sharks walked away with the victory as it's team went undefeated in last Saturday's single elimination play.
The championship match gave fans another look into the past as the Tiger Sharks fended off the Cayo Western Ballaz. These were the two teams who reached the finals of last year's competition, and it was to be expected this game would have high energy and emotion.
Thanks to the dynamic play of American import Caleb Sutton (199-F-90, college: Judson) dropping 18 points and returning Tiger Shark Veteran Ashton Edwards with 16, the Tiger Sharks saw themselves heading toward the podium to collect yet another title.
'These guys (San Pedro organization) have such a great unity and tradition that I am excited to be a part of this year. Coach Rico Black told me just to be myself and play hard and with the help of my teammates, I was able to do just that.' Sutton said when asked about the win.
The NEBL is gaining momentum for the 2016 season. As teams look on to January 16th, the new year will undoubtedly become a historic showcase for yet another exhilarating period of basketball in Belize.
