Belize's National Elite Basketball League held one of its most anticipated games of the year last night, when the Cayo Western Ballaz hosted the 2 time reigning champion San Pedro Tiger Sharks in the official rematch of last season's finals. The two teams met earlier in the preseason and tensions were high walking into the stadium Friday night.
The Ballaz were quick to let the Tiger Sharks know that they were ready for war committing to an early 2-point lead to end the first quarter. That lead ballooned to a hefty 15-point deficit for the Tiger Sharks trailing 32-17 with only 3:22 left before the half. Yet true to the nature of a Tiger Shark, San Pedro wouldn't go down without a fierce fight. At the half the Tiger Sharks trailed the Ballaz by 3 amassing their own 15 to 3 point run.
Defensive intensity was all that was required for San Pedro as they opened the second half with two quick steals leading to easy buckets on the other end. With 5:27 left in the 3rd quarter the Tiger Sharks took their first 42-40 point lead and never looked back. San Pedro stretched its lead to 16 points in the 4th quarter allowing for the starters to rest and the bench to play, leaving the fans of the Western Ballaz hushed by the visiting Tiger Sharks.
American import Caleb Sutton (199-F-90, college: Judson) lead the charge offensively for San Pedro dropping, 23 points and snatching down 9 rebounds in the game. Sutton (199-F-90, college: Judson) lead all scorers on both teams and added the much required intensity San Pedro prided itself on in their previous two championship seasons. Much the same can be said about Gene Myvett (193-G-82, college: CS Los Angeles) whose seasoned presence and power provided problems for the Ballaz. Myvett finished the game with 17 points and a NEBL leading 7 assist game.
Off the Bench for the Tiger Sharks, Jamal Kelly displayed an exceptional performance also scoring 17 points and stealing the game away from Cayo. The Western Ballaz' American import James Milton (203-F, college: Stevenson) did his best scoring a team high 19 points but it wasn't enough as he watched his team drop to 1-2 for the season.
Next week the undefeated Tiger Sharks will travel back to the island and take another formidable opponent. The Smart Belize Hurricanes are another undefeated team who have high hopes to contend for the title run this season.

NEBL Week 8 Review!!! - 2 days ago
This year, the NEBL has been more competitive compared to the past few years. This, of course, makes the games more exciting to watch. One thing is certain, the addition of foreign players to the league has significantly impacted both quality and play level of certain teams. This past weekend, predicted outcomes to the games held in Belmopan, San Ignacio and Orange Walk were debated up to the last minutes of play. In Belmopan, the home team struggled to pull its win from the San Pedro Tig...   [read more]
