Libertad Sunchales claimed the opening win at the South American League Group D. They overcame Sao Jose/Vinac in Vargas, Venezuela. William Graves (198-F/G-88, college: N.Carolina) came up with 17 points and 8 rebounds to lead the winners.
Libertad Sunchales fired 24 points in the opening quarter to take a 5-point lead. Libertad left Sao Jose/Vinac behind in the second quarter. The Argentinean team gained a 41:28 halftime advantage. Sao Jose/Vinac managed to slow their opponents down in the third quarter. The Brazilian side cut the deficit by one point. But Libertad came up with 25 points in the fourth frame and sealed the victory. Gabriel Mikulas (200-F-80, agency: Interperformances, college: E.Carolina) and Jamaal Levy (206-C-83, college: Wake Forest) added 12 points each in the win. Alvaro Calvo (203-G/F-83, agency: Dynamics Global Management) answered with 22 points for Sao Jose/Vinac. Murilo Becker (210-C/F-83) posted 21 points and 9 rebounds in defeat.
