Tiago Splitter's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Brazilians playing currently abroad - Dec 4, 2012

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Brazilian players, who play currently abroad.


Tiago Splitter

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Tiago Splitter (211-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA). He was the major contributor in a San Antonio Spurs' victory against the Washington Wizards (1-13) crushing them 118-92 in the NBA in Monday night's game. Splitter had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added 7 assists and 2 blocks in 23 minutes on the court. The San Antonio Spurs have quite an impressive 14-4 record this season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Splitter has relatively good stats this year: 8.6ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.2apg, 2FGP: 57.3%(55-96) and FT: 73.3% in the 18 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Brazilian and Spanish. Splitter is currently a member of the Brazilian senior national team.

Anderson Varejao

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Anderson Varejao (205-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Cleveland Cavaliers (4-14) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Varejao's very good performance the Cleveland Cavaliers were defeated 91-78 on the road by the Phoenix Suns. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 18 rebounds. Varejao also added 3 assists. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Varejao's ninth year with the team. He is currently first on the league's list of best rebounders. Varejao has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 15.2ppg, 15.4rpg, 3.2apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 53.3% and FT: 77.8%. Varejao is in the roster of the Brazilian senior national team.

Hatila Passos

   #3. The Brazilian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Hatila Passos (211-85, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in Uruguay), who plays in the Uruguayan LUB. He was not able to help Hebraica (15-9) in their last game. Despite Passos' very good performance the fifth-placed Hebraica was edged 73-71 at home by the lower-ranked (#11) Sayago in the Capital group. He had a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 14 rebounds. Passos also added 2 blocks in 37 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Passos is currently fourth on the league's list of best rebounders with 11.9rpg. This year his other stats are: 15.4ppg, 1.2apg, 1.1bpg, 2FGP: 67.9%(131-193) and FT: 57.0% in the 20 games. Passos played for the Brazilian national team two years ago.

Joao Paulo Batista

   #4. Power forward Joao Paulo Batista (207-81, college: Gonzaga, currently plays in France) led Le Mans to a victory against the 11th-ranked JSF Nanterre (4-5) 80-74 in the French ProA in Saturday night's game. He scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Le Mans Sarthe Basket (7-2) is placed second in the ProA. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Batista is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Le Mans' roster. This season Batista has relatively solid stats: 10.4ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.6apg. He used to play for the Brazilian national team back in 2010.

   #5. International point guard Marcelinho Huertas (191-83, agency: Edge Sports, currently plays in Euroleague) contributed to an easy victory against the third-ranked Besiktas (4-4) crushing them 78-48 in the Euroleague last Friday. Huertas scored 7 points and added 3 passes in 15 minutes. Regal FC Barcelona (8-0) is placed first in group D. So far his team won all eight games in the Regular Season. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Huertas' overall stats are: 9.6ppg, 2.1rpg and 3.1apg in the eight games. He is another player who holds two passports: Brazilian and Italian. Huertas plays currently for the Brazilian national team.

   #6. Point guard Leandro Barbosa (190-82, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Portland Trail Blazers (8-10) 96-78 in the NBA on Friday night. He recorded 9 points and blocked 2 blocks. The Boston Celtics have 9-8 record this season. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Barbosa's total stats this season are: 5.7ppg and 1.6apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Brazilian National Team roster.

   #7. International center Hilario Nene (207-82, currently plays in NBA) was not able to secure a victory for the Washington Wizards (1-13) in their game against the New York Knicks (12-4) in the NBA. Nene recorded 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 18 minutes. But the Washington Wizards were crushed 108-87 in New York by the Knicks. Nene has very impressive stats this year: 11.5ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.3apg and 1.3spg in the four games. He is also Brazilian national team player.

   #8. Center Andre Almeida (211-88, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the Wake Forest University 79-63 in the NCAA last Tuesday. Almeida recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 3 blocks. The University of Nebraska has conference record this season. Almeida has reliable stats this year: 11.5ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.3apg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Brazilian university national team back in 2009.

International center Lucas Nogueira (213-92, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Blusens Monbus (5-5) crushing them 89-66 in the Spanish ACB in Saturday night's game. He recorded 8 points. Asefa Estudiantes Madrid (6-4) is placed eighth in the ACB. Nogueira's total stats this season are: 3.2ppg and 2.3rpg. He used to play for the Brazilian national team last year.

Swingman Jonathan Tavernari (198-87, college: BYU, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Biancoblu BO (6-2) 88-71 in the Italian Lega2 (second division) last Sunday. Tavernari scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 20 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Givova Scafati Basket (6-3) is placed fourth in the Lega2. This year Tavernari's total stats are: 9.8ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.1spg in the nine games. He is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Brazilian senior national team.

   #11. Former U17 international center Rafael Maia (206-91, currently studies in the States) contributed to Brown's surprising victory against the Sacred Heart University 69-56 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Maia recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 15 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. Maia has averaged so far 9.8ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Brazilian U17 national team five years ago.

   #12. International point guard Rafael Freire (188-92, currently plays in Spain) faced previously mentioned Lucas Nogueira in the Spanish ACB last game. Freire couldn't help Blusens Monbus in their game against Asefa Estudiantes. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Freire recorded only 3 points in 12 minutes. His team was crushed by 23 points 89-66. He has averaged so far 1.8ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.6apg in the 10 games. Freire is also in the roster of the Brazilian national team.

   #13. International forward Marcus Vinicius Toledo (203-86, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Palencia Baloncesto crushing them 93-62 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Friday night's game. He scored 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Toledo is currently third on the list of most steals. He has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.2apg and 2.0spg. Toledo is also Brazilian national team player.

   #14. Former international guard Carlos Cobos (193-88, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Leche Rio Breogan Lugo in a 2-point victoryagainst the closely-ranked Leyma Basquet 71-69 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) last Saturday. He scored 5 points and added 4 assists in 28 minutes. Cobos has averaged so far 5.0ppg, 2.8rpg and 2.8apg in the nine games. He used to play for the Brazilian national team back in 2010.


The list of other players, who all have Brazilian passport but never been selected to any of Brazilian national teams:

   #1. Kazuya Hatano (192-F-82, currently plays in Japan), who plays in the Japanese BJ League could not help Oita Heat Devils (9-7) in their last game. Despite Hatano's very good performance Oita Heat Devils (#5) were crushed 100-68 on the road by the leading Okinawa GK in the Western group. He was the top scorer with 20 points. Hatano also added 4 rebounds in 39 minutes. It was Oita Heat Devils' third consecutive loss in a row. It's Hatano's first season with the team. This year his total stats are: 7.5ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.1apg in the 14 games he played so far. Hatano has a dual citizenship: Brazilian and Japanese. Despite his Brazilian passport, Hatano previously played for the Japanese U22 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Brazilian team.

   #2. Atila Santos (208-C-83, agency: Warren Sports International, college: Minnesota St., currently plays in Bulgaria) led Balkan to an easy victory against the league outsider U20 (0-8) crushing them 91-65 in the Bulgarian NBL in Saturday night's game. Santos recorded 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 21 minutes. Balkan Botevgrad (4-4) is placed fifth in the NBL. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Santos is ranked fourth on the list of the best rebounders in the league and also on the list of best blockers (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 11.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.4apg, 1.4bpg and 1.4spg in the five games.

   #3. Renan Lenz (206-C-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Utah's surprising victory against the Texas State University at San Marcos 74-69 in the NCAA last Friday. Lenz recorded 8 points. The University of Utah has conference record this season. It's Lenz's first year with the team. His stats this year are: 11.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.4apg, 1.4bpg and 1.4spg.

   #4. Rodrigo de Souza (188-G, currently studies in the States) was not able to help the Pacific in their game against the Gonzaga University in the NCAA. de Souza scored 8 points. The Pacific was badly defeated 85-67 in Spokane, WA by the Gonzaga University. de Souza has averaged so far 5.0ppg, 2.8rpg and 2.8apg.

   #5. Andre Coimbra (205-F-86, agency: SDJ Sports, college: Cent.Michigan, currently plays in Japan) was not able to secure a victory for Osaka Evessa (1-11) in their game against Fukuoka Rizing (10-6) in the Japanese BJ League. He scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 11 minutes. Osaka Evessa (#10) lost 65-75 at home to the much higher-ranked (#3) Fukuoka Rizing in the Western group. It was Osaka Evessa's seventh consecutive loss in a row. Coimbra has averaged so far 4.4ppg and 4.4rpg in the 12 games.

   #6. Gerson Santo (206-C-91, is currently at the American university) managed to help Colorado State University to win against the University of Evansville 79-72 in the NCAA last Saturday. He scored only 3 points. Santo has averaged so far 4.4ppg and 4.4rpg.

   #7. Pedro Maciel (185-PG-89, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Nicholls St. in their game against the Michigan State University in the NCAA. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Maciel scored only 3 points and added 3 assists in 15 minutes. His team was crushed by 45 points 84-39. Maciel has averaged so far 4.4ppg and 4.4rpg in the 12 games.

   #8. Rinaldo Mafra (201-F-86, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to a Jacksonville St.'s victory against the Alcorn State University 56-52 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He scored only 1 points. Mafra has averaged so far 4.4ppg and 4.4rpg.

   #9. Arthur Bernardi (206-F-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Houston Baptist in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Houston Baptist lost 53-61 in a derby game to the Rice University. Bernardi had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 14 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks in 33 minutes. Bernardi has averaged so far 4.4ppg and 4.4rpg in the 12 games.

Minas (NBB) signed 25-year old American guard Evan Roquemore (190-82kg-92, college: Santa Clara). He played last season at Nidaros Jets in Norwegian BLNO. In 13 games he had very impressive stats: 25.6ppg, 6.1rpg, 4.8apg and 2.5spg. Great season as he was named to Eurobasket.com All-Norwegian BLNO Honorable Mention. America/Unirp/Rodobens/Smel/Abzil (Paulista) signed 24-year old Brazilian guard Gabriel Andrade (185-78kg-93). He just graduated from BYU-Hawaii (NCAA2). Andrade has played there for the last four years. In 20 games he had 8.0ppg, 1.7rpg, 1.8apg and 1.5spg last season. American Point guard Dontrell Brite (175-PG) put on an amazing game in the last round for L.Sorocaba, receiving a Latinbasket.com Paulista Player of the Week award for round 2.
