Anderson Varejao's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Brazilians playing currently abroad - Dec 11, 2012

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Brazilians who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Anderson Varejao (205-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Cleveland Cavaliers (4-17) in their last game. Despite Varejao's very good performance the Cleveland Cavaliers lost 79-89 on the road to the Detroit Pistons. He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 18 rebounds. Varejao also added and 3 steals in 39 minutes on the court. It was Cavaliers' fifth consecutive loss in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Varejao's ninth year with the team. He is the league's best rebounder with 15.2rpg. Varejao also averaged so far 14.5ppg, 3.3apg, 1.5spg and FT: 77.1% in the 20 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Brazilian senior national team.

Tiago Splitter

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Tiago Splitter (211-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA). Splitter was the major contributor in a San Antonio Spurs' victory against the Houston Rockets (9-11) crushing them 114-92 in the NBA last Friday. He scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The San Antonio Spurs have a very good 18-4 record this season. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Splitter has relatively good stats this year: 9.3ppg, 4.7rpg, 1.2apg, 2FGP: 62.1%(77-124) and FT: 73.5%. He has a dual citizenship: Brazilian and Spanish. Splitter is in the roster of the Brazilian senior national team.

   #3. The Brazilian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Joao Paulo Batista (207-81, college: Gonzaga, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in France. He was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Le Mans (2-3) in their last game. Despite Batista's very good performance Le Mans lost 68-77 in Lubertsy to the leading Triumph Lyubertsy. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Batista also added 5 rebounds in 23 minutes. His team will play only one more game in the Eurocup Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Batista is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Le Mans' roster. Batista has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.4ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.6apg, 2FGP: 57.1%(36-63) and FT: 75.0% in the five games. Batista played for the Brazilian national team two years ago.

   #4. Center Hilario Nene (207-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA was not able to secure a victory for the Washington Wizards (2-15) in their last game on Friday. Despite his good performance the Washington Wizards were defeated 104-95 in Atlanta by the Hawks. Nene scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. It's Nene's first year with the team. This season he has relatively solid stats: 10.6ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.7apg. Nene is also Brazilian national team player.

   #5. International point guard Marcelinho Huertas (191-83, agency: Edge Sports, currently plays in Euroleague) managed to help Regal FC Barcelona in a 1-point victoryagainst the sixth-ranked Partizan (2-7) 68-67 in the Euroleague last Thursday. He scored 5 points in 14 minutes. Regal FC Barcelona (9-0) is placed first in group D. So far his team won all nine games in the Regular Season. They will play only one more game in the Euroleague Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. This year Huertas' overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.9apg in the nine games. He is another player who holds two passports: Brazilian and Italian. Huertas plays currently for the Brazilian national team.

   #6. Center Hatila Passos (211-85, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in Uruguay) led Hebraica to a 3-point victory against the bottom-ranked Nacional (5-20) 72-69 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB on Friday night. He recorded 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Hebraica Macabi (16-9) is placed fifth in Capital group. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Passos belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #4. This season he has very high stats. Passos averages: 15.3ppg and 11.5rpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Brazilian senior team two years ago.

   #7. International center Lucas Nogueira (213-92, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Asefa Estudiantes (6-5) in their game against Real Madrid (11-0) in the Spanish ACB. Nogueira scored 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Asefa Estudiantes was defeated 87-74 in a derby game by the leading Real Madrid. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Nogueira's total stats this season are: 3.5ppg and 2.5rpg. He used to play for the Brazilian national team last year.

   #8. Point guard Raul Neto (186-92, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Lagun Aro GBC (1-10) in their game against G.Canaria 2014 (8-3) in the Spanish ACB. Despite his good performance in Sunday night's game He scored 10 points. Neto has reliable stats this season: 11.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 3.4apg and 1.5spg. He plays currently for the Brazilian national team.

   #9. Former University international center Andre Almeida (211-88, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Nebraska's victory against the University of Southern California 63-51 in the NCAA last Monday. Almeida recorded 8 points and blocked 3 blocks in 15 minutes. The University of Nebraska has conference record this season. Almeida's stats this year are: 11.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 3.4apg and 1.5spg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Brazilian university national team three years ago.

Forward Marcus Vinicius Toledo (203-86, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a 3-point Ford Burgos' victory against the 12th-ranked Caceres Basket (3-7) 91-88 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Friday night. Toledo recorded 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Autocid Ford Burgos (8-2) is placed second in the LEB Gold. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Toledo's total stats this season are: 9.7ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.2apg and 1.8spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Brazilian National Team roster.

   #11. Former U17 international center Rafael Maia (206-91, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Brown in their game against the University of Notre Dame in the NCAA. Maia scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. His team was crushed by 27 points 84-57. This year Maia's total stats are: 9.7ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.2apg and 1.8spg in the 10 games. He used to play for the Brazilian U17 national team five years ago.

   #12. Former international swingman Jonathan Tavernari (198-87, college: BYU, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a Givova Scafati's victory against the closely-ranked Novipiu Casale 86-80 in the Italian Lega2 (second division) on Saturday night. He recorded only 3 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 19 minutes. Tavernari has averaged so far 9.1ppg and 3.8rpg in the 10 games. He used to play for the Brazilian national team back in 2010.

   #13. Former international guard Carlos Cobos (193-88, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Leche Rio Breogan in their game against Planasa NV in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division). Cobos recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. His team was edged 78-76. He has averaged so far 4.9ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.6apg. Cobos used to play for the Brazilian national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Brazilian passport but never been selected to any of Brazilian national teams:

   #1. Atila Santos (208-C-83, agency: Warren Sports International, college: Minnesota St., currently plays in Bulgaria) was the major contributor in Balkan's victory against the league leader Lukoil Academik (7-1) 72-63 in the Bulgarian NBL in Saturday night's game. Santos had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting the same number of rebounds in 30 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Balkan Botevgrad (5-4) is placed fourth in the NBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. It's Santos' first season with the team. Santos belongs to league's best rebounders (ranked #2) and also on the list of best blockers (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 12.7ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.2apg, 1.2bpg and 1.2spg in the six games he played so far.

   #2. Kazuya Hatano (192-F-82, currently plays in Japan), who plays in the Japanese BJ League could not help Oita Heat Devils (9-9) in their last game. Despite Hatano's good performance the fifth-placed Oita Heat Devils were badly defeated 81-65 on the road by the lower-ranked (#8) Takamatsu FA in the Western group. He had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 11 rebounds. Hatano also added 2 blocks in 40 minutes. It was Oita Heat Devils' fifth consecutive loss in a row. It's Hatano's first season with the team. This year his total stats are: 8.1ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.1apg in the 16 games. Hatano has a dual citizenship: Brazilian and Japanese. Despite his Brazilian passport, Hatano previously played for the Japanese U22 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Brazilian team.

   #3. Rodrigo de Souza (188-G, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an overtime Pacific's victory against the The University of Nevada 78-72 in the NCAA last Tuesday. de Souza scored 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The University of Pacific has conference record this season. de Souza has averaged so far 9.7ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.2apg and 1.8spg.

   #4. Renan Lenz (206-C-90, currently studies in the States) was not able to help the Utah in their game against the Brigham Young University in the NCAA. Lenz scored 5 points. The Utah was edged 61-58 in Provo, UT by the Brigham Young University. It's Lenz's first season with the team. He has averaged so far 9.1ppg and 3.8rpg.

   #5. Luiz Bidart (183-G-90, is currently at the American university) contributed to Seattle's victory against the Eastern Washington University 75-69 in the NCAA last Monday. Bidart scored 6 points and added 3 passes in 22 minutes. The Seattle University has conference record this season. It's Bidart's first year with the team. He has averaged so far 9.1ppg and 3.8rpg in the 10 games.

   #6. Gerson Santo (206-C-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the Colorado St. in their game against the University of Illinois-Chicago in the NCAA. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Santo scored only 2 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 11 minutes. His team lost 55-64. He has averaged so far 4.9ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.6apg in the 10 games.

   #7. Gabriel Dos Santos (193-G, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help University of Detroit Mercy to win against the Rochester College crushing them 102-67 in the NCAA last Saturday. Dos Santos scored only 4 points. He has averaged so far 4.9ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.6apg.

   #8. Diego Soarez (205-C-87, currently plays in Uruguay) couldn't help Atletico Welcome in their game against Montevideo BC in the Uruguayan LUB. Soarez cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points in 9 minutes on the court. His team lost 88-95. Soarez has averaged so far 2.2ppg and 2.2rpg in the 17 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Brazilian and Uruguayan.

   #9. Experienced Romero Junior (200-F-74, currently plays in Portugal) couldn't help Fisica in their game against CAB Madeira in the Portuguese LPB. Junior cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points. It was his first game for Fisica this season. His team was crushed by 25 points 83-58. Junior has both Brazilian and Portuguese nationalities.

   #10. Arthur Bernardi (206-F-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Houston Baptist in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Houston Baptist lost 57-69 at home to the Sam Houston State University. Bernardi scored 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 30 minutes. It was his first game for Houston Baptist this season.

Flamengo - Bauru 89-84 Flamengo regained the lead in the championship series. They held off Bauru to open 2-1 lead in the Finals. Paschoalotto/Bauru trailed by 17 points after 3 quarters before a 27-15 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 84-89 at the end of the game. Flamengo - Bauru 80-85 Bauru knocked down Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro to even NBB Finals at 1-1. Flamengo was trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 38-31 charge of Paschoalotto/Bauru, which allowed them to win the game. America/Unirp/Rodobens/Smel/Abzil (Paulista) inked 29-year old American small forward Randon Dyer (196-87). He moved there from Battle Creek Flight (IBA) in the U.S. where he started the season.
