Marcelinho
Huertas
Unicaja Malaga (Liga Endesa) agreed terms with experienced 34-year old Brazilian international point guard Marcelinho Huertas (191-82kg-83). He has a double citizenship as he also holds Italian passport. Huertas has played for the last two years at LA Lakers in the NBA. In 23 games he averaged just 2.7ppg, 1.0rpg and 2.3apg last season.
Among other achievements Huertas played in the final of Spanish Liga Endesa in 2015. He received also Eurobasket.com All-Spanish Liga Endesa Honorable Mention award in 2014 and 2015.
Huertas represented Brazil at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) last year. His stats at that event were 5 games: 10.4ppg, 3.0rpg, Assists-3 (6.6apg), FGP: 43.8%, 3PT: 50.0%, FT: 88.2%.
And here thanks to pro basketball Huertas experienced life on three different continents. He is familiar with European, Latin American and of course North American leagues. Huertas has played previously professionally in Italy (Benetton Treviso and Fortituto Kontatto Bologna), Spain (Joventut, FC Barcelona, Baskonia and RETAbet Bilbao Basket) and Brazil (Pinheiros and Paulistano).
Let's have closer look into His outlook: One of the most scouted young Brazilians, thanks to his quick play and his great court vision; a very promising point guard, with the explosiveness and the fast decision making of a young Steve Nash; also a great offensive player, he needs only to improve his quarterbacking skills when the pace is slower, and to improve in defense;
Positives: Underrated point guard who knows how to read a game, how to make teammates play. Game is very reminiscent if Steve Nash. He is a true PG, and will not need to be adapted, like Leandro Barbosa, who was a SG in Brazil. Huertas is a great outside shooter with three point range. Very good dribbling skills, he can really handle the ball. Great passer with good court vision.
Negatives: Doesn't have a good defensive game. Not a good defender even in the Brazilian league. Needs to learn how to stay in front of his man, he gets beat off the dribble very easily. Won't be able to guard the quicker more talented point guards of the NBA. A decent but not great athlete. Needs to gain experience as a point guard and make better decisions
.
