ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI In one of the most one-sided games of this seasons BVI Basketball Federation Summer League, the Legs put 154 points on the board to beat the HLSCC Stingrays by 86 points on Sunday June 24, 2012.
Dione Blyden scored 43, Kennedy Bass (196-F-81, college: Anderson, SC) 38, Jovaughn Cameron 25, Trevon Lewis 22, and Jason Edwin had a quiet night shooting just 18!
Edwin did add 10 assists, 8 rebounds and 7 steals to his nights work, but the Stingrays were outclassed from the first whistle to the buzzer. Carlisle France scored 22 of their 68 point total with other contributions coming from Tyree Maduro and Rushawn Johnson who both scored 12.
Legs scored almost as many points in the 1st quarter as HLSCC managed in the first half and outscored their opponents by 53 in the second half. Bass also picked up 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists, whilst Blyden finished his stellar performance with 6 rebounds, 8 steals and 6 assists.
In the nights other Senior match up, Mega Mix defeated the Latinos 113-96. Douron Phillip top scored for the Mix with 27 points as his team used a strong second quarter to give themselves the edge. In fact the Latinos outscored their more illustrious opponents in the second half, but couldnt quite do enough to reduce the deficit.
Nathaniel Malone contributed 22 points and Devon Wattey pulled down 34 rebounds for the Mix, whilst Sandy Nadal grabbed 51 points for the Latinos.
In earlier games, the Gold Rams picked off the Blue Rams in a developmental league encounter 52-17. Shaquiel Prescott finished with 10 points for the Golds as they held the Blues to just 4 second half points.
In the Junior Division, the Young Gunners beat the Rams 84-79 despite being outscored by 15 in a frantic last quarter.
Shem Samuel was top scorer for the Gunners with 25, Michael Benjamin scored 20 and both picked up 12 rebounds. For the Rams Kevon Shaq Lettsome scored 25 with 30 rebounds, Elvette Dore picked up 21 rebounds with his 14 points and Romain Minott finished with 14 points.
On Saturday in the Development division, VG Heats beat the Junior Mega Mix 31-26. Terrique Watley scored 9 and both Aldric Thomas and Jamoi Dore scored 6 for the Heat whilst Tyler Cameron notched 10 for Mega Mix and JMoi Liburd 8 points and 7 rebounds.
In the Junior Division, Hawks beat Junior Mystics 96-80. Javier Martinez scored 35 points with 23 rebounds, Ryan Alfred added 31 and Shakiel Humphrey 19 for the Hawks .William Penn Junior led the mystics with 20 points, Kimron Telemaque added 19 and Deondre Rymer 12.
In the senior division, East beat Pure Playaz 78-40. Leslie Smith scored 19 points with 14 rebounds, David Lettsome 18, Clint Weston 15 with 11 rebounds and Alward Forbes 12 with 10. Bodean Samuel notched 10 for the Playaz and Deon Smith 9 with 10 rebounds.
The final game of the day saw All Ah Wee overcome the Kings 73-59. Aubrey Daniels Junior hit 17 points with 13 rebounds. Charles Pemberton scored 10 points with 23 rebounds and Kenrick Thomas junior 15 points. For the Kings Jevonne Demming scored 14 points. Delbert Sammuel scored 12 with 14 rebounds and Ray Victor 11.
On Friday the Young Gunners took care of And One 119-82. Benjamin scored 34 points, Sammuel 32 and Makebo Fahie 20. Benjamin also picked off 12 steals and Samuel 10. For And One Sheldeen Joseph top the charts with 18 points whilst William Bridgwater notched a double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Hawks soared over the Rams 95-76 with Nigel Carey scoring 16 points and 18 rebounds. Shakiel Humphrey also scored 16 and Javier Martinez picked up 16 rebounds. For the Rams Lettsome again led the scoring with 22 points whilst Jasin Rhymer Junior, Kevin Jones and Minott all reached double figures.
In the Senior Division the Legs beat the Latinos 85-62. Trevon Lewis scored 26, Blyden 24, Rhennie Phipp 16 with 12 rebounds and Bass 12 with 14 rebounds. Nadal scored 23 for the Latinos.

Im disappointed in the turn out (of teams), but thats something I will deal with later.
Minister responsible for sport, the Honourable Myron V. Walwyn had made mention that the Federation body needs to be strong and whilst he was alluding to how fast the sport was growing, commented, Basketball is fast becoming the most popular sport in the Territory and the Federation needs to be strong, but his words were more than an appropriate if the BVIBF is going to maintain discipline and respect within the league structure.
Mrs Melrona Telemaque spoke on behalf of Patrick O. Harrigan, Ag. Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and pledged the departments continued support for the growth and development of Basketball in the Territory. She also made mention that that this sport could not have survived and succeeded over the years without the continuous commitment of players and patrons who, with great passion, have helped to develop basketball as one of the most supported sporting events in the Territory. With the help of Godly principles many young men and women alike have benefited from the amazing coaching and sportsmanship that has been fostered in this league.
The Minister, during his remarks, also re iterated the comments made earlier by Mrs Telemaque on behalf of the DYAS, encouraging the teams to play fair. I would like to encourage everyone to exercise good sportsmanship and to try their best as I declare the 2013 Basketball Season officially open.
On behalf of the main Sponsor, Lime, Mrketing Manager Janette Brin felt that the sport has a lot of potential to help the youths, in particular, fill their dreams. Its a great, happening sport and we are happy to be back on board, she noted, We have a lot of great young athletes, girls and boys, playing the sport and Lime feels that they have a lot of potential, so its an honour for us to help them go after their dreams.
The first game of the elongated night saw the female ballers put on an exhibition match and gave witness to the crowd that they have talent and the ability to play thrilling basketball.
Joi Ann Thomas, who earlier had given a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, scored the first 6 points of the night, which, with the addition of 2 from Sheldeen Joseph, had given the Greens an early 8-5 lead over the Yellows. Bianca Brewley had scored 3 for the opposing team.
Thomas splashed a 3 pointer to make it 12-7 later in the first quarter, but a Joy Victor steal and pass to Brewley reduced the deficit to just 3 at 14-11. Dominique Wattley then netted a 3 to give the Yellows the lead for the first time at 16-14.
Joseph did her best to get the Greens back ahead during the 2nd quarter, including one missed shot that she made, and then recovered before shooting again and drawing a foul. She hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it 18-15 to the yellows. Thomas also kept the pressure up with another 2, but the Yellows survived the onslaught to lead 22-21 at the half.
The third quarter was mostly about the drives of Joseph drawing fouls and the break aways from Victor, with Shauliqua Fahie adding to the mix. The topsy turvy nature of the period ending at 33-30 to the Yellows on the back of two late free throws from Victor.
Into the 4th and a couple of minutes of defensive stalemate was broken by Brewley who increased the yellows lead to 5 points from under the basket. With the clock winding down, Kelienne Smith made a steal and pass to Fahie, but her surging run was pulled up for travelling. Joseph made a couple of free throws to make it 35-32. Smith, Fahie, Thomas and Joseph all saw long shots hit the rim or go wide. With 39 seconds to go, Smith missed another attempted score leveler and into the last 10 seconds the Yellows were able to hold on to the ball and secure the win.
Joseph ended with 15 points for the Greens and Wattley 12 for the yellows who won 35-32.
In the league proper, the Young Starz were led to an 83-72 win over And One by 18 point efforts from both Jmoi Dore and Stephan Caul. The latter also added 12 rebounds to hit the seasons first double double and picked up 5 blocks and 3 steals to complete his night.
Aldric Thomas scored 16 point for the Starz, whilst Albert Hatchett notched 16 points for And One along with 7 rebounds. Nathan Rodney and Akeem Nibbs both scored 15 with the former adding 9 rebounds and the latter 6 assists.
The final game on the opening day saw business as usual for the defending Champions, the Legs, who despite being without Jasin Edwin and Kennedy Bass, had just enough power to hold off the Kings 61-55.
Each quarter had been evenly matched with neither team able to grab an advantage until the Legs showed why they are Champions with a dominant last quarter to wrestle the game away from the Kings.
Khalid Jerrard top scored for Legs with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Dion Blyden scored 14 and Trevor Stephen added 7 whilst the Kings were led by Ray Victors 17 point and 15 rebound effort. Kameron Young scored 11 points with 8 rebounds and Cedric King 10 points with 14 rebounds.

Looking through the rosters, Hodge noted who they played for dont have them now. It looks like teams have been shopping and the players want to see what they can do in bringing teams up to a higher level and of course, everybody wants to beat the Legs!
The Opening ceremony is at 6.30 P.M. and will be followed by a female exhibition game. That game will be followed by Young Starz against And One, before the 2012 defending Champions Legs face the Kings to round out the opening day.
On Sunday, action continues unabated from 5 P.M. with And One playing Fearless, Heats against the Rebels and East facing Game Boys.
Falling short of many peoples hopes that games would be played back in the villages and not just at one central location, Mr. Hodge applauded the efforts of the Recreation Trust in getting the Greenlands Court up to a high standard and commented that all the courts should be in the same condition. I was very impressed with the surface of the court and Im hoping the Recreation Trust can get the rest of the courts around the Territory to the same standard.
However, Hodge did note that because of the amount of matches scheduled to be played in the Summer League and of course because of the other events that take place in the sports complex, that matches would be played on the newly reconditioned gym in Belle Vue and the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duffs Bottom.
There will be games every day of the week except Thursday, stated Hodge.
In an attempt to draw some crowds back to the game, one of the sponsors, Lime, will be doing give-aways, and the concession stand will be open and not only equipped with refreshments but also cable TV so fans can watch the NBA Championships during the games.
There will be a featured game every week that will be covered by television and replayed during the following week and fans will be able to follow regular updates on the Federation's Facebook page.
There will be no teams representing Virgin Gorda this time around, but Hodge quickly dispelled any rumours of a rift between the Summer League and Virgin Gordas Summer Jam. In speaking with Trevor West Stephens he said he was having difficulty in getting a team as most of the VG players are already playing for other teams and it certainly wasnt an intentional move or that the Federation had denied them entry.
With the so far undisclosed new rosters, fans will have to come out and see who is playing for whom but as Hodge concluded, There will be some surprises this year so come out and watch.

Ottley, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound post player from the British Virgin Islands, joins USF after playing two seasons at Sauk Valley Community College (Ill.), where he averaged 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds a game to lead the Skyhawks to a 21-11 mark last season. He earned first-team All-Arrowhead Conference and first-team All-Region IV recognition.
We feel like he will make an immediate impact inside for us, said Johnson. Theres no doubt he can score and rebound, and those are two areas we can always improve in.
