ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI Whilst all eyes will be on the mouthwatering match-up between Legs and the Mix on August 10, 2012 in the BVI Basketball Federations Summer League Finale, the Junior Series will also be a tantalizing treat.
To get to the Final, the Hawks beat Junior Mystics 82-74 in a game which they narrowly managed to stay ahead in each quarter. Cravern Andrew led the scoring for the Hawks with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 8 steals whilst Kadeem Jones finished with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 7 steals and 3 assists. Nigel Carey added 15 points with 6 rebounds and Khadin Fahie had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks and 5 steals. For the Mystics, Paul Bridgwater fought an almost lone hand with 36 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and 6 steals. William Penn Junior added 15 points, 15 rebounds and 3 steals.
The Young Gunners progressed with back to back wins over Another Level. On Friday July 21, 2012 they won 79-68 having been down at the half by 3. They then produced a 31 point 3rd quarter to seal the victory and send the series into game 3. Shem Samuel scored 20 points with 16 rebounds, Deshawn Creque 17 with 12 rebounds, Ashfield Frett 13 with 15 rebounds and LiShaqua Fahie finished with 12 points. Sekayi Petersen did his best to keep Another Level in the game with 19 points whilst Terrique Wattley and Revaughn Garaway added 16 and 11 respectively.
Sundays decisive game resulted in a 69-58 win for the Young Gunners led by Shem Samuels 17 points. Frett added 14 with 9 rebounds and Michael Benjamin scored 13 with 7 assists. Wattley scored 14 for Another Level and CJ Georges finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Glenal Layne picked up 11 rebounds, but could do little to stop the onward march of the Gunners.
In the Senior Division, the fast dismantling East team was no match for Mega Mix who romped to a 118- 68 annihilation of their once feared foe. Halstead JR Chiverton scored 38 points and Kelvin Samuel, 37. JR also picked up 7 assists and 6 rebounds whilst Tevon Phillip also had 6 rebounds and Samuel, 5. For the shattered East, Leslee Smith scored 18 points with 7 rebounds and Clint Weston finished with 13 points.
East did regroup for game 2 and even brought in reinforcements, but all to no avail as the rampant Mix had their eyes firmly on reaching the final and avenging last years defeat to the Legs. The match went right down to the wire with East missing a 3-pointer that would have tied the game and sent it into overtime. As it was the Mix held onto to win 94-91 thanks in a large part to another 30 point night from Samuel. JR chipped in with 17 points, Phillip 16 and Steve Parillon 14. JR also added 13 assists and 9 rebounds to his nights work. Dameon Ottley scored 24 points with 11 rebounds for East who also got 21 points from Smith and 15 with 17 rebounds from Dwayne Penn. Their 32 point onslaught in the last quarter and the missed 3 at the buzzer leaving them just short of extending the series.
The Legs were made to fight slightly harder for their place in the final having gone down in the series opener to the Kings. They battled back to record a 2-1 series win with a 95-77 win on Saturday and an 87-77 victory on Sunday.
Jasin Edwins 30 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 7 assists powered them to level the series. Kennedy Bass (196-F-81, college: Anderson, SC) adding 26 points with 7 rebounds as the Legs came from a half time deficit to boss the second half for the win. Randy George finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Gary Hillhouse put 10 points on the board. For Kings Jevonne Demming scored 20 points, Eric Matthias 12 and the unusually quiet Ray Victor 11.
The clash with Mega Mix was eventually settled after Legs roared to life in the 2nd quarter of game 3, outscoring their opponents by 14 points to take the lead after a slow start. The lead was extended in the 3rd and finalized in the 4th despite Ray Victors super human dunk over George and Edwin.
Hillhouse top scored for Legs with 24 points and 13 rebounds, Edwin scored 17, George 15 and Bass 11.
In the Development League Final which also starts on August 10, at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex, the Bulls will face off against the VG Heats.

Works on the roof for the basketball court at the Jeffery Caines Arena, Virgin Gorda (VG), along with other improvements to the facility will begin by year end. This promise came from Hon. Myron Walwyn, Education and Culture Minister.
Recently, the Minister who has responsibility for sports, explained that on the 17th May tenders were sent out for the covering of the basketball court.
"The covering of this court has been promised for a number of years, but we are committed to actually getting it done," he said.
At the time, the Minister stated that they anticipate that they will receive bids within a two-week period to the central tender board.
"And we hope to start on this project before the end of this year. Thanks to community members such as Erwin "Reds" Tellimack and Trevor "West" Stevens, we continue to have significant athletic talent being developed in Virgin Gorda, and it is time that as a Government and a people, we invest in the actual infrastructure to support the dreams and aspirations of our youth," the Minister stated.
The open-air facility has been a challenge for players and during the opening ceremony of a basketball league in August last year, it was evident as large swarm of insects kept players fanning and visibly uncomfortable.
The scope of works for the enhancement of the Virgin Gorda Basketball Court includes the drawing and design of a proper covering to completely cover the existing basketball court, the creation of more seating capacity and upgrades to the restroom facility and the concession stand.
The drawings are expected to incorporate proper lighting for the court and mechanical requirements to improve the scoreboard equipment.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The BVI Basketball Federation summer league continued last night, May 31, 2013 with three games, which pulled off some stiff level of competition.
The first game of the night saw Lions coming up against Philipinos. Lions maintained the lead throughout the four quarters of the game to take the win with a score 81-45. Lions' Laurus Nicholas was the top scorer with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Also scoring double points in the game were Tyrone 'Pope' Tyson with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Romano Peters was deemed the best player of the game with 12 points, 17 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and 4 assists.
Of the 45 points scored by the losing team, Philipinos' Louie Poblete scored 15 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals and 3 assists.
Rebels, who received strong support from Hon. Julian Fraser, RA were up against some strong competition from the Skulls in the second game. Despite their valiant efforts, the team out of the Third District struggled and continued to be the chasers from behind as Skulls held firm to the lead.
Under 3 minutes in the 3rd quarter, Rebels made a fighting come back and narrowed the margin to trail by 1 point at which stage the game was 53-52 but pulling a free throw seconds after brought them the equaliser with 53-53. They were locked again with 55-55 in the early minutes of the 4th quarter and failed to take advantage of the opportunity at a lead having missed on a free throw with less than 8 minutes left in the game. The game was locked again 57-57 with 6:30 mins. remaining.
Skulls demanded the full respect from Rebels as they refused to step back. They pulled forward to take control of the remaining of the 3rd quarter, which ended at 55-53 then straight on the ending of the 4th quarter to win with a score of 76-68.
Rebel's Sandy Nadal was the lead scorer for the game with 29 points, however, the most valuable player turned out to be Skull's Shamar George who got 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 steal and 2 assists.
Rebel's coach, Mr Rajah Smith, launched a protest at the end of the game, alleging that the referees were not neutral and were guilty of dictating the game. "There is much to say about the unjust behaviour of certain members of the federation but I will hold on that for now," coach Smith said. He, nonetheless, did the mature thing of extending congratulations to the winning team, Skulls.
The final game for the night saw Hawks, with 57 points, falling to Heats who whooped them with a solid 82 points. Tyler Cameron was the MVP for that game with 16 points, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 steal and 3 assists. Hawk's Kadeen was a keen contender who got 17 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block, 4 steals and 4 assists.

Minister responsible for sport, the Honourable Myron V. Walwyn had made mention that the Federation body needs to be strong and whilst he was alluding to how fast the sport was growing, commented, Basketball is fast becoming the most popular sport in the Territory and the Federation needs to be strong, but his words were more than an appropriate if the BVIBF is going to maintain discipline and respect within the league structure.
Mrs Melrona Telemaque spoke on behalf of Patrick O. Harrigan, Ag. Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and pledged the departments continued support for the growth and development of Basketball in the Territory. She also made mention that that this sport could not have survived and succeeded over the years without the continuous commitment of players and patrons who, with great passion, have helped to develop basketball as one of the most supported sporting events in the Territory. With the help of Godly principles many young men and women alike have benefited from the amazing coaching and sportsmanship that has been fostered in this league.
The Minister, during his remarks, also re iterated the comments made earlier by Mrs Telemaque on behalf of the DYAS, encouraging the teams to play fair. I would like to encourage everyone to exercise good sportsmanship and to try their best as I declare the 2013 Basketball Season officially open.
On behalf of the main Sponsor, Lime, Mrketing Manager Janette Brin felt that the sport has a lot of potential to help the youths, in particular, fill their dreams. Its a great, happening sport and we are happy to be back on board, she noted, We have a lot of great young athletes, girls and boys, playing the sport and Lime feels that they have a lot of potential, so its an honour for us to help them go after their dreams.
The first game of the elongated night saw the female ballers put on an exhibition match and gave witness to the crowd that they have talent and the ability to play thrilling basketball.
Joi Ann Thomas, who earlier had given a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, scored the first 6 points of the night, which, with the addition of 2 from Sheldeen Joseph, had given the Greens an early 8-5 lead over the Yellows. Bianca Brewley had scored 3 for the opposing team.
Thomas splashed a 3 pointer to make it 12-7 later in the first quarter, but a Joy Victor steal and pass to Brewley reduced the deficit to just 3 at 14-11. Dominique Wattley then netted a 3 to give the Yellows the lead for the first time at 16-14.
Joseph did her best to get the Greens back ahead during the 2nd quarter, including one missed shot that she made, and then recovered before shooting again and drawing a foul. She hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it 18-15 to the yellows. Thomas also kept the pressure up with another 2, but the Yellows survived the onslaught to lead 22-21 at the half.
The third quarter was mostly about the drives of Joseph drawing fouls and the break aways from Victor, with Shauliqua Fahie adding to the mix. The topsy turvy nature of the period ending at 33-30 to the Yellows on the back of two late free throws from Victor.
Into the 4th and a couple of minutes of defensive stalemate was broken by Brewley who increased the yellows lead to 5 points from under the basket. With the clock winding down, Kelienne Smith made a steal and pass to Fahie, but her surging run was pulled up for travelling. Joseph made a couple of free throws to make it 35-32. Smith, Fahie, Thomas and Joseph all saw long shots hit the rim or go wide. With 39 seconds to go, Smith missed another attempted score leveler and into the last 10 seconds the Yellows were able to hold on to the ball and secure the win.
Joseph ended with 15 points for the Greens and Wattley 12 for the yellows who won 35-32.
In the league proper, the Young Starz were led to an 83-72 win over And One by 18 point efforts from both Jmoi Dore and Stephan Caul. The latter also added 12 rebounds to hit the seasons first double double and picked up 5 blocks and 3 steals to complete his night.
Aldric Thomas scored 16 point for the Starz, whilst Albert Hatchett notched 16 points for And One along with 7 rebounds. Nathan Rodney and Akeem Nibbs both scored 15 with the former adding 9 rebounds and the latter 6 assists.
The final game on the opening day saw business as usual for the defending Champions, the Legs, who despite being without Jasin Edwin and Kennedy Bass, had just enough power to hold off the Kings 61-55.
Each quarter had been evenly matched with neither team able to grab an advantage until the Legs showed why they are Champions with a dominant last quarter to wrestle the game away from the Kings.
Khalid Jerrard top scored for Legs with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Dion Blyden scored 14 and Trevor Stephen added 7 whilst the Kings were led by Ray Victors 17 point and 15 rebound effort. Kameron Young scored 11 points with 8 rebounds and Cedric King 10 points with 14 rebounds.
