ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As the international community and the Virgin Islands (VI) celebrate October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month where the world brings attention to the disease, which affects both male and female; one local basketball team has joined in the celebration.
Bayside Blazers Basketball Team, which was founded in 2014, joined in the celebration while participating in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League and saw both players and coaches decked out in pink socks.

The colour pink is identified as the international symbol of breast cancer awareness and is used to express moral support for persons with breast cancer around the world.

Gloria A. Fahie is impressed

President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria A. Fahie said she is proud of the team Bayside Blazers and the group of young men in taking a social stand for a worthy cause. Ms Fahie said breast cancer affects both male and female throughout the world; however, it's more prominent in women around the world.

Meanwhile, Manager of Bayside Blazers Julian Willock said he was moved that the team agreed to show support for such a cause and that Bayside Blazers tries to be more than just basketball but is socially aware as 'many of us know someone who has been lost due to cancer'.

Mr Willock said the team will be 'wearing the pink socks to a few more games, to bring attention this month to the ills of breast cancer' as the Bayside Blazers are currently playing in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League.

The team has participated over the years in the Road Town Federation League, K & J 3 on 3 Tournament, Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed League and plans to participate in the Virgin Gorda Summer Jam League next year.

Who is on the Team?

Bayside Blazers roster in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed League includes Head Coach Rhennie O. Phipps, Assistant Coach Jason A. Edwin, and Kennedy H. Bass, who is also part of the coaching staff.

Team Players include Dion M. Blyden, Ryan R. Alfred, Shakeen E. Freeman, Dextroy D. Manswell, Frankly L. Penn, Tavon J. Phillip, Jevon K. Serrant, McKenzie L. K. Baltimore, JoVaughn N. Cameron (draft pick), Kyle L. Abraham (Team captain) Devon H. Furlonge and Kimani T. Stevens.

The Bayside Blazers Organisation also has a team Doctor, Attorney, Scorer/Statistician and other support staff.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. The tumor is malignant (cancerous) if the cells can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs most often in women; however, men can get it too.

There are no immediate statistics on the deaths caused by cancer in the VI; however, it is believed to be above the regional average.
