 | "Colombian Basketball"... Who?? | |
|
| | | While the basketball world gets ready for a very promising Olympic tournament, we are among the countries hoping to some day achieve such a high accomplishment as participating on an event of this magnitude. However, in Colombia we are far away from doing that. Thinking about Olympics or World Championship Tournaments is kind of delusional right now because we haven't been able to be part of the basketball elite of South America; nevertheless the continent.
All we have right now is a bunch of questions: will we ever reach the level of the basketball powerhouses in America? Are there enough talented players in the country? Do we have good coaches? Colombia's Federation is doing its job? Do we need better local tournaments? Do we need to send more players abroad? Do we need a good sponsorship? Do we need better planning? The answer to this question may vary depending on who you ask, but bottom line, we all know that our Male and Female teams are way better than their last performances show.
We have experienced players with vast experience not only nationally, but also overseas. Both men and women are developing their skills playing college basketball in the US, as well as professionally in Europe and South American leagues. In order to motivate those players to take part of national teams, there needs to be a well organized preparation for tournaments. As it is right now, playing for the national team is a disadvantaged situation for those who risk losing contracts opportunities, or athletic scholarships, since it's known that the federation is not able to provide a serious support for players.
There are good coaches in Colombia, but unfortunately they are not in the best position to take advantage of theircoaching knowledge, since the preparation time is very limited. It is important to recognize that despite the lack of opportunities new talented players have jumped on to the national stage, but sometimes are more the limitations than the opportunities.
In my personal opinion, I think everything should be fixed from top to bottom; in other words, it should start from the Federation itself. Regardless of who is part of the Federation's Committee, a better job needs to be done to give our players the preparation and support necessary for international competition. It is true that at this point the lack of sponsorship has a tremendous impact and finding one is probably a hard task, but not an impossible one. Colombia is a country that values quality, and basketball has always attracted people who want to watch sports.
At this point many of you might think that it is easier for me to criticize, but unfortunately all I have said is pure reality. My only intention is to help so that our basketball can be in the place it deserves. If there is any questions regarding this article, do not hesitate to contact me, questions and comments are more than welcome. LET'S GO COLOMBIA!
