theWwechester Fire in the USBL and went to half time with a 57-47 lead
over Costa Rica.
In the second half, Bryan Matthew scored 32 points and was 17-12 from
field goal range, Lennox McCoy ended with 27 points and 9 assists being
the key for this team to win.

Henry Martinez with 20.

Mexico finished Group A play 3-0 after defeating a brave Costa Rican team.
Horacio Llamas (211-C-73) had another excellent game, and David Crouse
(211-F/C-74, college: USC) rebounded from a disappointing outing against
the USVI to score 17 points. Leading by just eight points late in the
third quarter (64-56), Mexico went on a 20-11 run to put the game out of
reach. For Costa Rica, Henry Martinez (185-G/F-75) and Clifford Smith
(193-G-) were again a two-man show. Hernold Gardener had a night he would
like to forget, shooting a woeful 2/18 from the field. Mexico and the USVI
advance to the semifinals out of Group A, and also qualify for the
Tournament of the Americas in August.
Day 2: June 18, 2003: Costa Rica - Antigua 91-84
Costa Rica: Martinez 31+6ast, Smith
27+7reb, Simmons 12, Gardener 11+14reb, Chavarria 6, Barrantes 2, Arias 2
Antigua: Planes 0+7reb; Matthew 24+8reb, Mar. Davis 18+9reb, McCoy 15,
Joseph 12, Williams 5, Mah. Davis 5+11reb, N. Davis 3, Barton 2)
Costa Rica used a strong second quarter to open up a lead on Antigua and
hold on for the win. Today's keys were a strong defense that forced 22
turnovers and much-improved shooting (31/69, 10 3-pointers). Henry
Martinez recovered from a disappointing performance against the USVI to
post a tournament-high 31 points, while Clifford Smith overcame a slow
start to add 27. Hernold Gardener and Javier Planes gave their second
straight strong performance on the boards. Bryan Matthew and Mario Davis
shot the ball well for Antigua, but 7 turnovers from Davis did not help
the cause. Both teams are still mathematically in contention for the
semifinals, although Antigua will have to upset the USVI tomorrow to have
any chance.
Day 1: June 17, 2003: US Virgin Islands - Costa Rica 98-66
USVI: Sheppard 19 (5x3)+8ast, Thomas
16, Victor 14, Bell 10, Langellier 9, Rhymer 7, Richards 6, White 6, Hodge
5, Oliver 4, Brathwaite 2
Costa Rica: Smith 21 (5x3), Martinez 12, Planes 10, Gardener 9+12reb,
McDougall 9, Simmons 5)
Costa Rica stayed close early, trailing just 21-19 after the first
quarter. Foul trouble forced Henry Martinez (185-G/F-75) and Hernold
Gardener to the bench early in the second, and the USVI's offense heated
up, racing out to a 52-35 halftime lead. Kevin Sheppard (182-G-79)
(182-G-79) (7 assists by halftime) and Cuthbert Victor (195-G-83) (12
first half points) keyed the second quarter rally. Both teams stumbled
through much of the second half as the USVI gradually extended their lead,
eventually pulling away as Carl Thomas (200-F-76, college: Charleston)
scored 14 of his 16 points in the half. Raja Bell (196-F/G-76, agent:
Rudoy Herb, college: Florida Intern.) of the Dallas Mavericks was not a
major factor, hitting just 2 of 7 shots on his way 10 points. Clifford
Smith scored 21 points for Costa Rica, but poor shooting (24/78) was their
undoing. The USVI shot an excellent 11/23 on three-pointers, Sheppard
hitting all five of his attempts.

The lack of pre-tournament practice really hurt Belize. In all three
games they played a strong first half, but tired in the second half
against better-conditioned opponents.
