Guatemala capped their U17 CentroBasket tournament with victory. They held off Bahamas yesterday to claim the first win at the competition. Guatemala clinched the 5th spot, while Bahamas remained in the sixth place winless.

Costa Rica U17 - Virgin Islands U17 52:44 Costa Rican U17 National Team claimed the third spot at the CentroBasket tournament in Mexico. They held off Virgin Islands on the final day of the competition to grab the last ticket to the U18 Fiba Americas Championship. Costa Rica and Virgin Islands entered the game tied at 2-2 record and had to win to take the needed third position. Virgin Islands uttered the first word. They limited Costa Rica to 8 points in the opening stanza and ensured a 4-point lead after ten minutes. Costa Rican side answered with their own stifling defense in the second quarter holding Virgin Islands to 6 points and stealing a narrow 19:18 halftime lead. The third period turned out into a battle of nerves as the teams exchanged the baskets. Costa Rica entered the fourth frame ahead by the same one point. Virgin Islands seemed hopeful but ran out of gas and scored just 13 points in the fourth frame to allow Costa Rica to cruise to the victory. Michelle Mayorga (-93) produced 13 points for Costa Rica. Valeria Miranda (-94) finished with 11 points for the winners. Lanese Bough (-92) responded with 13 points and 6 steals for Virgin Islands. Ky'laine Rogers had 10 points and 15 boards in defeat. Vrigin Islands enjoyed a 49:40 advantage on the glass but sank only 23% from the field and committed 24 turnovers.

Both Mexico and Puerto Rico secured the birth at the U18 Fiba Americas Championship. Puerto Rico also enjoyed a perfect record before the game and looked forward to extending it. But the hosts played it safe in the first frame and grabbed a 4-point lead at the first intermission. Mexico unleashed a 21:9 run in the second stanza to earn a 16-point advantage at halftime. Puerto Rico needed a major break to sober up. They pulled on the throttle to won the third frame trimming the distance at 13 points. But Mexico stayed cool in the final minutes ensuring a comfortable win at the end. Ana Noriega (-93) scored 25 points and pulled down 8 rebounds for Mexico. Maria Acero (-93) added 13 points, while Andrea Medina had 11 for the winners. Rita Acevedo (168-G-92) answered with 22 points and 10 boards for Puerto Rico. Diamalises Rivera had 15 points in defeat. Mexico outrebounded their opponents 48:41 and forced those to 29 turnovers.

Guatemala U17 looked better in the beginning of the game and hoped for the initial victory in Day 4. Guatemala enjoyed 14:11 lead at the end of the first frame and looked forward to keep the score later in the game

Virgin Islands U17 improved to 2-2 to tie with Costa Rica players at the Centrobasket U17 Championship for Women. Virgin Islands U17 remain Guatemala U17 winless after 61:56 victory. Guatemala U17 looked better in the beginning of the game and hoped for the initial victory in Day 4. Guatemala enjoyed 14:11 lead at the end of the first frame and looked forward to keep the score later in the game. Virgin Islands U17 however replied with 19-12 in the second frame to take the control of the half. The teams went to the lockers for 30:26 score as Virgin Islands U17 was in front in the game. Guatemala U17 was far to follow the opponents in the game and also enjoyed the lead in the third period. After thirty minutes of the game the score was tied at 47:47. Virgin Islands U17 needed a great defense to prevail Guatemala U17 in the last period and in the game as well. With 14-9 in the last 10 minutes Shamyra Vanterpool (-92) (-92) led her team to the second victory. Shamyra Vanterpool top-scored for the winners with 18 points, while Lanese Bough (-92) added 10 and De la Cruz Trass Kelssy had 9. Emily Quan (-95) ended up with 23 points in the losing effort and Fernandez Melissa notched 14. Tomorrow Costa Rica U17 will play against Virgin Islands for the third spot. Guatemala will face Bahamas for the initial victory at the tournament.

Bahamas U17 meanwhile dropped to 0-4 and will hope for the initial victory in the last day of the Preliminary Round. Mexico and Bahamas started offensively and scored 37 points in the first period. Mexico grabbed 24-13 and did not allow the guests to reach 10 points in the next three quarters. The second period became a nightmare for Bahamas U17 that failed at 9-33. The game between Costa Rica U17 and Puerto Rico U17 became the top one in Day 4 of the Preliminary Round. Centrobasket U17 Championship for Women registered 76:71 victory for Puerto Rico U17 that improved to 4-0 record. Costa Rica U17 meanwhile is 2-2 and was caught by Virgin Islands for the third spot. That was really a battle in the court with both teams tasting the lead. In a back-to-back period the board showed 18:18 after the first 10 minutes. The scenario continued in the court in the second quarter as the teams stayed even in the court. Only after 17-16 in the frame Puerto Rico U17 grabbed 35:34 advantage. After the teams came back from the lockers Costa Rica U17 went in front but lost the period again. The winners produced 21-19 in the third frame for 3-point deficit before the last stanza. Puerto Rico U17 did not stay in defense and had 20-18 in the last period for the total success. Lirielys Ramos (-94) paced all the winners with 14 points for the undefeated record. Bahamas slipped at 0-3 at the bottom of the ladder. It was a sloppy game at the start as the teams teamed up for just 17 points in the first frame. Costa Rica led 10:7 after ten minutes. The tempo gradually increased as Costa Rica started to take over. They secured a 7-point lead at halftime. Bahamas went off the dressing room eager to snap the losing skid. They outscored Costa Rica in the third period to trail by just 5 points at the final break. But Bahamas could not improve in the final stanza scoring just 10 points. Costa Ricans responded with 21 points and ensured a confident win at the end. Karen Acosta (-95) notched 21 points and 11 boards to pace Costa Rica. Valeria Miranda (-94) added 12 points, while Yoseline Alfaro had 11 points in the win. Britenique Harrison (-94) answered with 12 points and 12 boards for Bahamas. Taneka Sandiford netted 9 points in defeat.

Puerto Rico U17 Virgin Island U17 83:55 Puerto Rican U17 selection gained the third consecutive win at the Centrobasket tournament in Mexico. They outscored Virgin Islands in Aguascalientes yesterday. Puerto Rico share the top position together with the hosts. Virgin Islands fell at 1-2 record in the fourth spot. Puerto Rico waste no time to claim their advantage. They unloaded 29 points in the starting stanza worth a 21-point lead. Puerto Rico stretched the gap to as many as 30 points at halftime. Virgin Islands finally found their game after the long break. They shut down Puerto Rican offense and trimmed the margin to 22 points at the final break. But the Latin American team quickly regained control and coasted to the win in the final quarter. Five Puerto Rico players scored in double figures. Marie Medina scored 14 points for the winners. Keiry Huertas (-94) had 12 points, while Rita Acevedo fell just short of triple-double with 12 points, 9 assists, 9 steals and 7 boards.
