American guard Leonard Mendez (196-G-87) had an amazing evening in the last round for second-ranked Piratas, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 16 (Second Stage). The 25-year old player was the main contributor (38 points, nine rebounds and three assists) to his team's victory, helping them to edge out Academia (#5, 5-11) 98-95. Piratas maintains the 2nd position in Colombian DPB. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier in Second Stage. Piratas will need more victories to improve their 10-6 record. In the team's last game Mendez had a remarkable six three-pointers out of 11 attempts. He just recently signed at Piratas, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Leonard Mendez averages this season 15.1ppg. Worth to mention Mendez played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.
The second best player in last round's games was 35-year old American Quentin Smith (205-C-77) of Aguilas. Smith had a very good evening with a double-double of 36 points and 15 rebounds. Bad luck as Aguilas lost that game 89-99 to the higher-ranked Bucaros (#3, 9-7). Aguilas is still second from the bottom in the standings. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 5-11 record. Smith is one of the most experienced players at Aguilas and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.
Third on the list of top players last round was American forward Brandon Crawford (201-F-84, agency: Dream Team Management) of Academia (#5). Crawford showcased his all-around game by recording 25 points, sixteen rebounds (!!!) and five assists in the last round. Despite Crawford's great performance Academia lost 95-98 to the higher-ranked Piratas (#2, 10-6). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of Academia not to end season at such low position in the league, however are less than slim as they have already lost 11 games, recording just five victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Crawford could try to bring Academia's a little bit higher in the standings. Crawford has individually a great season in Colombia. After 16 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 18.1ppg (8th best) and rebounds with 11.1rpg (3rd best).
Other top performing players last week: 4. John Hernandez (207-C-84) of Bucaros - 13 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists 5. Edgar Arteaga (200-F-80) of Piratas - 23 points and 7 rebounds 6. Cesar Chavez Jacobo (196-PG-85) of Academia - 23 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists 7. Alpha Bangura (197-F/G-80) of Bucaros - 25 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists 8. Jared Corpus (193-F) of Aguilas - 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists 9. Antoine Jordan (196-G-83) of Once Caldas - 23 points and 8 rebounds 10. Tayron Thomas (191-PG-84) of Piratas - 21 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists
The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
