Liga DirecTV Round 20: Condores beat Sabios by two after a very close game - May 19, 2016

The most exciting game of round 20 in the Liga DirecTV took place in Manizales. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of one of their biggest challengers Sabios (9-11) to sixth ranked Condores (9-11) 83-81 in the game for the fourth place. The former international guard Stalin Ortiz (190-81, college: Valparaiso) orchestrated the victory by scoring 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. American power forward Kevin Mickens (207-83, college: George Mason) contributed with 17 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. The former international center John Hernandez (207-84) replied with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 21 rebounds for Sabios. Condores moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sabios and Halcones. Condores is looking forward to face league's leader Academia in Montana in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Sabios will play on the road against Halcones in Cucuta and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Bucaros (13-7) against fifth ranked Halcones (9-11) on Tuesday night. Host Bucaros were defeated by Halcones in a tough game in Bucaramanga 87-94. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Bucaros. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward R.J. McGhee (198, college: Oklahoma City, agency: CGL Sports) who helped to win the game recording 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and Hector Diaz who added 22 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. American Tayron Thomas (191-84, college: Philadelphia) responded with 28 points and 7 rebounds. Halcones moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sabios and Condores. Bucaros at the other side keep the third position with seven games lost. Halcones will play against Sabios (#4) in Manizales in the next round. Bucaros will play on the road against the league's second-placed Cimarrones in Quibdo-Choco and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The winners were led by Jonathan Rodriguez who scored that evening 32 points and 6 assists. Even 31 points and 5 rebounds by Antonio Davis did not help to save the game for Piratas. Academia have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 17-3 record. Piratas lost fourth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 18 lost games. Academia will meet Condores (#6) in the next round where they are favorite. Piratas will play against Patriotas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Defending champion Patriotas keep the seventh place with 13 games lost. Cimarrones' next round opponent will be Bucaros (#3) in Bucaramanga, which may be the game of the day. Patriotas will play on the road against Piratas (#8) in Bogota and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Academia - Piratas 93-77

Liga DirecTV top team - Academia (17-3) had no problems winning another game on Tuesday. This time they beat eighth ranked Piratas (2-18) in Montana 93-77. Academia dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Piratas' 36. They outrebounded Piratas 48-28 including a 38-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. The winners were led by Puerto Rican-Dominican forward Jonathan Rodriguez (196-87, college: Campbell) who scored that evening 32 points and 6 assists and naturalized Venezuelan forward Michael Hinestroza Javes (208-90, college: UALR) supported him with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Five Academia players scored in double figures. Even 31 points and 5 rebounds by American swingman Antonio Davis (196-82, college: Urbana) did not help to save the game for Piratas. His fellow American import forward Arnold Fripp (201-93, college: Coppin St.) added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the guests. Academia have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 17-3 record. Piratas lost fourth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 18 lost games. Academia will meet Condores (#6) in the next round where they are favorite. Piratas will play against Patriotas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Patriotas. They outrebounded Patriotas 45-30 including 31 on the defensive glass. American players dominated the game. The best player for the winners was guard Brandon Sperling (196-90, college: Humboldt St.) who scored 29 points and 8 rebounds. Forward Tyquane Goard (201-93, college: Marshall) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Sperling is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Power forward Aramie Brooks (203-87, college: Northwestern St.) produced 15 points and 9 rebounds and forward Titus Mims (201, college: Hardin-Simmons) added 12 points and 4 assists respectively for the hosts.
