Liga DirecTV Round 22: Bucaros lose to Cimarrones in the game between Top 4 teams - May 22, 2016

The game between Top Four teams took place in Quibdo-Choco. Second ranked host Cimarrones (16-6) defeated one of their biggest challengers Bucaros (13-9) 77-60. Cimarrones looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. American guard Brandon Sperling (196-90, college: Humboldt St.) scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import guard Deandre Haskins (193-88, college: Chaminade) chipped in 18 points during the contest. At the losing side guard Daniel Sapp (193, college: California, PA) responded with 23 points and 9 rebounds. Cimarrones have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 16-6 record having just three points less than leader Academia. Bucaros lost third consecutive game. They keep the third place with nine games lost. Cimarrones are looking forward to face Sabios (#4) in Manizales in the next round. Bucaros will play at home against Piratas and are hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
Liga DirecTV top team - Academia (19-3) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat sixth ranked Condores (9-13) in Cundinamarca 94-82. Puerto Rican-Dominican forward Jonathan Rodriguez (196-87, college: Campbell) notched 36 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds to lead the effort and Dwayne Smith supported him with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Even 26 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists by the former international guard Stalin Ortiz (190-81, college: Valparaiso) did not help to save the game for Condores. Condores' coach Tomas Diaz rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Academia have an impressive nine-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 19-3 record. Condores at the other side keep the sixth place with 13 games lost. Academia will play against Patriotas (#7) in Boyaca in the next round where they are favorite. Condores will play at home against Halcones and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Antonio Davis produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds for lost side. Defending champion maintains seventh position with 8-14 record. Loser Piratas stay dead last with 19 lost games. Patriotas will meet league's leader Academia in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Piratas will play against Bucaros (#3) in Bucaramanga and hope to secure a win.

Halcones managed to secure a 4-point victory 93-89. Worth to mention a great performance of R.J. McGhee who helped to win the game recording 31 points and 6 rebounds. Halcones moved-up to fourth place, which they share with defeated Sabios. Halcones' next round opponent will be Condores (#6) in Cundinamarca. Sabios will play at home against the league's second-placed Cimarrones and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Piratas - Aguilas 69-83

The game in Bogota was also quite interesting. Seventh ranked Patriotas (8-14) played at the court of 8th ranked Piratas (3-19). Patriotas defeated Piratas 83-69 on Saturday. Patriotas dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Piratas' 34. Americans were the main players on the court. Forward Titus Mims (201, college: Hardin-Simmons) fired a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Aramie Brooks (203-87, college: Northwestern St.) chipped in a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds. Brooks is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Swingman Antonio Davis (196-82, college: Urbana) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds and forward Arnold Fripp (201-93, college: Coppin St.) added 18 points and 12 rebounds respectively for lost side. Four Piratas players scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains seventh position with 8-14 record. Loser Piratas stay dead last with 19 lost games. Patriotas will meet league's leader Academia in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Piratas will play against Bucaros (#3) in Bucaramanga and hope to secure a win.

The game in Cucuta was also worth to mention about. One of their biggest challengers Sabios (10-12) played at the court of fifth ranked Halcones (10-12). Halcones managed to secure a 4-point victory 93-89. Halcones dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Sabios' 36 and made 19-of-25 charity shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Halcones forced 23 Sabios turnovers. 28 personal fouls committed by Sabios helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward R.J. McGhee (198, college: Oklahoma City, agency: CGL Sports) who helped to win the game recording 31 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Jose Baquero (199) contributed with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American guard Cory Bradford (191-78, college: Illinois) replied with 32 points and 5 rebounds and Venezuelan forward Juan Herrera (197-81) added 21 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Sabios. They outrebounded Condores 42-29 including a 31-16 advantage in defensive rebounds.
