Uruguay celebrated the first win at the Oscar Moglia Cup. They held off Cuba in the first game in Montevideo. Mauricio Aguiar (197-F-83, agency: Players Group) scored 17 points to lead the effort.
Uruguay who played without Leandro Garcia Morales got to a sloppy start. Cuba accounted for 28 points in the opening quarter to take a 9-point lead. Uruguay stopped the bleeding in the second term. The hosts trimmed the deficit to just three points at halftime 37:40. Cuba kept composure and rallied to a narrow 54:53 lead with ten minutes to go. The home team pulled in front late in regulation and Mauricio Aguiar went deadly from the stripe in the dying seconds to seal the victory for Uruguay. Fernando Martinez (170-G-79) and Esteban Batista (208-F/C-83) provided 13 points each in the winning effort. Orestes Torres (202-C-87) answered with 16 points for Cuba. Juan Pineiro (193-G-90) delivered 13 points in the loss.
