DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - CUBA 90-60

Dominican Republic opened FIBA Americas Championship 2011 in style. They destroyed Cuba 90-60 for 1-0 record in Group A. Participants of the same pool are also Canada, Venezuela and Brazil. Alfred Horford (208-F/C-86, college: Florida) shined for the winners with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Jack Michael Martinez (203-F/C-81, agency: Paris Global Sports) had double-double of 16 points and 10 boards, while Edgar Sosa (188-PG-88, college: Louisville) helped with 14 pts. Charlie Villanueva (209-F-84, college: Connecticut) delivered 11 pts in this meeting. In the loosing squad, Yoan Luis Haiti (200-C-82) was better than the others with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Lisvan Valdez (194-G/F-88) and Yudniel Perez (189-G-84) had 15 and 12 points respectively. Quarters: 18-8, 20-11, 31-18, 21-23. In Day Two, Dominican Republic will meet Venezuela. Cuba will take a break.

The most important game in the last round took place in La Habana between third ranked Tigres (4-4) and fourth ranked Capitalinos (5-3) on Sunday night. Tigres were defeated by Capitalinos on the road 71-61. The game was mostly controlled by Capitalinos. Tigres managed to win fourth quarter 18-15. Former international Swingman Andy Boffil (190-G/F-82) put on an amazing game in the last round for top-ranked Villa Clara, receiving a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 7. The 34-year old player was the main contributor (35 points) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Matanzas (#5, 3-4) 98-85. It allowed Villa Clara to consolidate first place in the Cuban LSB.
