Here is the weekly review of the top performing Cuban players, who play currently abroad.


Yorman Polas Bartolo

   #1. This week's number one is former international swingman Yorman Polas Bartolo (192-85, currently plays in Germany). He could not help Telekom Baskets (9-8) to beat Brose Baskets (16-1). Bartolo scored 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Telekom Baskets was defeated 85-70 on the road by the second-ranked Brose Baskets. It's Bartolo's first season with the team. This year he averages: 6.2ppg, 3.6rpg, 1.6apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 66.7%(42-63), 3FGP: 13.6% and FT: 46.4%. Bartolo has a dual citizenship: Cuban and German. He played for the Cuban senior national team six years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international point guard Taylor Garcia (182-87, currently plays in Spain). He led Quintanar to a 1-point victory against the ninth-ranked Azuqueca (8-6) 80-79 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) last Saturday. Garcia scored 16 points, made 5 passes and 4 steals in 40 minutes. Basket Globalcaja Quintanar (8-4) is placed sixth in Group B. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Garcia has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg, 2.9rpg, 3.8apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 50.8%, 3FGP: 35.7% and FT: 87.5% in 12 games he played so far. Garcia played for the Cuban national team in 2009.

   #3. The Cuban player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international forward Georvys Elias (199-81, currently plays in Spain). He was not able to help Albacete (5-11) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Elias' good performance Albacete was defeated 85-79 at home by the higher-ranked Moron (#7). He recorded 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks. Elias has relatively good stats this season: 10.6ppg, 6.9rpg, 3.0apg, 1.2bpg, 1.7spg, 2FGP: 51.9% and FT: 18.2%. He played for the Cuban national team eight years ago.

   #4. Power forward Georffri Silvestre (202-79, currently plays in Spain) led Nautico KIA Tenerife to a 2-point victory over the tenth-ranked Villarrobledo (7-7) 78-76 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) last Saturday. Silvestre was MVP of the game. He scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Nautico KIA Tenerife (9-3) is placed second in Group B. Silvestre's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. This season Silvestre has relatively solid stats: 14.4ppg and 5.7rpg. He used to play for the Cuban national team back in 2000.


The list of other players, who all have Cuban passport but never been selected to any of Cuban national teams:

   #1. Howard Sant-Roos (200-F-91, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) led his Czech Republic team CEZ Nymburk to a victory over the fifth-ranked Deutsche Bank Skyliners (4-7) 87-72 in the Basketball Champions League in Tuesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Sant-Roos scored 27 points (!!!), grabbed 6 boards, passed 4 assists and added 3 steals (was perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line !!!) in 33 minutes. CEZ Basketball Nymburk (8-3) is placed third in group A. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Sant-Roos has relatively good stats this year: 14.4ppg, 6.4rpg, 3.2apg and 2.8spg in 10 games he played so far.

   #2. Juan Ferrales (188-G-91, college: Barry, currently plays in Norway) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Nidaros Jets (10-8) crushing them 116-49 in the Norwegian BLNO on Saturday night. Ferrales scored 22 points, had 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 24 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Kongsberg Miners (14-2) is placed first in the BLNO. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Ferrales has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 24.4ppg, 5.3rpg, 5.4apg and 1.8spg in 16 games. Ferrales has a dual citizenship: Cuban and American. Strangely he has never played in Cuba.

   #3. Adrian Diaz (213-C-93, college: FIU, currently plays in Romania) contributed to a BC Timisoara's victory against the second-ranked Steaua CSM (11-2) 86-82 in the Romanian Liga Nationala in Sunday night's game. Diaz scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. BC Timisoara (8-6) is placed seventh in the Liga Nationala. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Diaz has relatively good stats this season: 10.7ppg and 5.3rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Cuban and American. Strangely Diaz has never played in Cuba.

   #4. Yankiel Moreno (189-G-90, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Bondi Ferrara in a victory against the 15th-ranked Unieuro Forli (4-12) crushing them 84-58 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) in Friday night's game. Moreno recorded only 2 points, 4 rebounds and 12 assists in 26 minutes. Bondi Ferrara (6-9) is placed 12th in East group. This year Moreno's overall stats are: 7.5ppg, 2.9rpg, 5.9apg and 1.2spg in 13 games. He has both Cuban and Italian nationalities.

Ciego de Avila - Santiago De Cuba 81:72 Ciego de Avila advanced to the Final as they edged Santiago De Cuba 81:72 in the decisive game 5. Ciego de Avila managed to win all the quarters of the game including 20-16 in the start. They added a 22-20 run in the second frame for a 42-36 halftime advantage. Moreover Ciego de Avila won the third period 18-16 and closed the game with a final 21-20 rally.   [read more]
Villa Clara reach the Finals - 2 days ago
Villa Clara reached the Finals as they overcame Camaguey 3-1 in the semifinal series. In Game 4 Villa Clara posted a 94-74 win. They scored 26 points in the first two quarters for a 52-35 halftime advantage. Camaguey replied with a 23-20 rally in the third period, while Villa Clara closed the game with a final 22-16 run to seal the place in the final. Santiago De Cuba meanwhile needed a 98=88 overtime win to tie the series at 2-2.   [read more]

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Cuban players, who play currently abroad. This week's number one is an international center Jasiel Rivero (204-93, agency: Pro Sports). He could not help Estudiantes Concordia (12-18) in their last game. Despite Rivero's very good performance Estudiantes Concordia lost 79-85 on the road to the lower-ranked (#18) Penarol.    [read more]
