LSB Round 9: Pinar defeat Capitalinos in the game between Top 4 teams - Feb 23, 2017

An interesting game for Pinar (7-1) which played road game in La Habana against 3rd placed Capitalinos (5-4). Second ranked Pinar managed to get a 10-point victory 64-54. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Capitalinos. The game was mostly controlled by Pinar. Capitalinos managed to win fourth quarter 17-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Strangely Capitalinos outrebounded Pinar 34-6 including a 13-1 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a good game for the former international point guard Yosiel Monterrey (185-88) who led his team to a victory with 23 points and 4 steals. The former international point guard Osmel Oliva (178-87) contributed with 16 points and 5 steals for the winners. point guard Yoel Sanchez (180-90) answered with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for Capitalinos. Capitalinos' coach Rainel Panfet rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Pinar have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 7-1 record having just three points less than leader Villa Clara. Capitalinos at the other side keep the third position with four games lost. They share it with Camaguey and Matanzas. Pinar are looking forward to face Guerreros (#5) in the next round. Capitalinos will play against Guantanamo and are hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.

Undefeated Villa Clara have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. They maintain first place with 9-0 record. Guantanamo at the other side still closes the standings with eight games lost. Villa Clara will play against Ciego (#7) in Avila in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Guantanamo will play at home against Capitalinos and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Avila was also quite interesting. Fourth ranked Tigres (5-4) played at the court of 7th ranked Ciego (1-8). Tigres managed to secure a 7-point victory 71-64 on Monday. Yoanis Baldo nailed 11 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. William Granda came up with 23 points and 5 steals for Ciego in the defeat. Ciego's coach tested twelve players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Tigres moved-up to third place, which they share with Capitalinos and Matanzas. Ciego lost their fourth game in a row. Defending champion keeps the seventh position with eight games lost. Tigres will meet Santiago (#6) on the road in the next round. Ciego will play against the league's leader Villa Clara and hope to win that game.

The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Guerreros moved-up to third place, which they share with Capitalinos and Camaguey. Santiago lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with six games lost. Guerreros' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Pinar in Rio and it will be for sure the game of the week. Santiago will play at home against Tigres (#3) and hope to win that game.

Villa Clara - Guantanamo 97-80

LSB top team - Villa Clara (9-0) had no problems winning another game. This time they beat eighth ranked Guantanamo (0-8) in Santa Clara 97-80. Matanzas - Santiago 100-73

The game between fifth ranked Guerreros (5-4) and 6th ranked Santiago (3-6) in ended with biggest points difference. Guerreros outscored guests from Santiago 100-73. The game without a history. Guerreros led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Santiago's 52. They outrebounded Santiago 29-10 including a 19-8 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Lazro Sanchez who scored 24 points. Luis Curtiz chipped in 12 points and 4 assists. Four Guerreros players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international forward Esteban Martinez (192-87) who recorded 34 points (!!!) and swingman Reider Giron (188-91) added 14 points respectively. The game in Avila was also quite interesting. Fourth ranked Tigres (5-4) played at the court of 7th ranked Ciego (1-8). Tigres managed to secure a 7-point victory 71-64 on Monday. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 36-28 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Forward Yoanis Baldo (191-89) nailed 11 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side and Yoimar Lopez (-96) accounted for 13 points and 4 steals. The former international William Granda (189-85, agency: Pro Sports) came up with 23 points and 5 steals and guard Dainier Martinez (184-96) added 20 points and 4 steals respectively for Ciego in the defeat. Ciego's coach tested twelve players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Tigres moved-up to third place, which they share with Capitalinos and Matanzas. Ciego lost their fourth game in a row. Defending champion keeps the seventh position with eight games lost. Tigres will meet Santiago (#6) on the road in the next round. Ciego will play against the league's leader Villa Clara and hope to win that game.
