Seventh-ranked Ciego (1-8) gave a tough game to top-ranked Villa Clara (10-0) in Avila on Tuesday. The visitors from Santa Clara managed to secure only three-point victory 87-84. However their fans expected much easier game. The former international swingman Andy Boffil (190-82) scored 30 points and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and international center Yoel Cubillas (204-94) chipped in 13 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks during the contest. At the losing side the former international William Granda (189-85, agency: Pro Sports) responded with 31 points and 5 steals. Ciego's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated Villa Clara have an impressive ten-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 10-0 record. Ciego lost fourth consecutive game. Defending champion dropped to the sixth place with eight games lost. Villa Clara are looking forward to face Capitalinos (#3) in La Habana in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Ciego will play at home against Santiago and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Even a double-double of 19 points and 10 steals by point guard Vladimir Francis (185-83) did not help to save the game for Tigres. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Santiago moved-up to fifth place. Tigres at the other side still closes the standings with nine games lost. Santiago will play against Ciego (#6) in Avila in the next round. Tigres will play at home against the league's second-placed Pinar and hope to get finally their first victory.
