Javier Justiz's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Cubans playing currently abroad: - Mar 7, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Cubans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Javier Justiz (205-92, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). He led Estudiantes Concordia to a victory against the leader San Martin Corrientes (27-10) 83-78 in the Argentinian LigaA last Thursday. Justiz recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 13 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Norte. Estudiantes Concordia (26-13) is placed second. Justiz has relatively good stats this season: 13.1ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.3apg, 2.0bpg, 2FGP: 51.7%, 3FGP: 25.0% and FT: 60.8%. He is currently a member of the Cuban senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard Reynaldo Garcia (187-90, agency: DTMones, currently plays in Argentina). Garcia contributed to a San Martin Corrientes' victory against the fourth-ranked GECR Indalo (19-20) 81-67 in the Argentinian LigaA on Sunday night. He recorded 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in 26 minutes. San Martin Corrientes (27-10) is placed first in Norte group. This year Garcia has relatively solid stats: 11.5ppg, 3.4rpg, 2.0apg, 2.0spg, 2FGP: 51.1%, 3FGP: 29.3% and FT: 70.4% in 32 games he played so far. He played for the Cuban national team in 2009.

   #3. The Cuban player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Grismay Paumier (204-88, currently plays in France). Paumier could not help SO Maritime Boulogne (8-13) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his very good performance SO Maritime Boulogne was defeated 86-80 on the road by the much higher-ranked ADA Blois (#4). Paumier was the second best scorer with 15 points. He also added 6 rebounds. Paumier has reliable stats this season: 11.5ppg, 7.4rpg, 1.3bpg, 2FGP: 62.1%(105-169) and FT: 49.2%. He played for the Cuban national team eight years ago.

   #4. An experienced forward Georvys Elias (199-81, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Albacete (5-18) in their last game. Despite Elias' good performance Albacete was crushed 91-62 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked (#9) Alcazar. He scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 29 minutes. It was Albacete's eighth consecutive loss in a row. Elias' stats this year are: 10.2ppg, 6.7rpg, 2.4apg, 1.1bpg and 1.6spg in 23 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team back in 2009.

   #5. Former international center Rangel Ramirez (206-75, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for AEC Collblanc (10-8) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Ramirez's good performance the fifth-placed AEC Collblanc (10-8) was crushed 89-59 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Martorell in the Group C-A. He was the top scorer with 12 points. Ramirez also added 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. It's Ramirez's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 6.9ppg and 6.0rpg. Ramirez used to play for the Cuban national team eleven years ago.

   #6. Power forward Georffri Silvestre (202-79, currently plays in Spain) helped Nautico KIA Tenerife win their game against the 16th-ranked Viten Getafe Fuenlabrada (2-19) crushing them 81-58 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) on Saturday night. He recorded 13 points in 21 minutes. Nautico KIA Tenerife (13-7) is placed sixth in Group B. Silvestre averaged so far 14.2ppg and 5.5rpg in 20 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Cuban senior team seventeen years ago.

   #7. Former international point guard Taylor Garcia (182-87, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Quintanar (10-11) in their game against CBA Gran Canaria B (13-9) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). He recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 40 minutes. Quintanar (#10) was badly defeated 84-66 at home by the higher-ranked (#7) CBA Gran Canaria B in the Group B. It was Quintanar's third consecutive loss in a row. Garcia averaged so far 13.9ppg, 2.9rpg, 3.2apg and 1.4spg in 21 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team eight years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Cuban passport but never been selected to any of Cuban national teams:

   #1. Howard Sant-Roos (200-F-91, currently plays in Czech Republic) led CEZ Nymburk to a victory over the second-ranked BK Pardubice (20-5) 100-94 in the Czech Republic NBL in Saturday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Sant-Roos had a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 4 assists and 4 steals in 34 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Places 1-6. CEZ Basketball Nymburk (25-1) is placed first. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Sant-Roos has relatively good stats this year: 13.3ppg, 5.5rpg, 3.3apg and 2.2spg in 23 games he played so far.

   #2. Juan Ferrales (188-G-91, college: Barry, currently plays in Norway) was the main contributor in Kongsberg's victory against the closely-ranked Baerum Basket (21-6) 78-68 in the Norwegian BLNO last Thursday. Ferrales was MVP of the game. He scored 24 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 40 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Ferrales' second season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Kongsberg Miners (23-4) is placed first in the BLNO. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Ferrales has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 23.4ppg, 5.5rpg, 5.5apg and 1.7spg in 27 games. Ferrales has a dual citizenship: Cuban and American. Strangely he has never played in Cuba.

   #3. Adrian Diaz (213-C-93, college: FIU, currently plays in Romania) could not help BC Timisoara (10-9) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Diaz's good performance the fifth-placed BC Timisoara (10-9) was badly defeated 92-73 at home by the lower-ranked Oradea (#6) in the Places 1-6 group. He was the top scorer with 13 points. Diaz also added 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. It's Diaz's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 9.8ppg and 4.8rpg. Diaz is another player who holds two passports: Cuban and American. Strangely he has never played in Cuba.

   #4. Sigal Benitez (193-G-94, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a 1-point Arenys' victory against the third-ranked Menorca (12-7) 82-81 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) in Sunday night's game. Benitez recorded 6 points. Arenys Basquet Joventut (10-9) is placed seventh in Group C-A. This season Benitez averages: 5.6ppg and 2.2rpg.

Caballos de Cocle Aguadulce (LPB) strengthened their roster with addition of experienced 35-year old Cuban international power forward Joan Luis Haiti (201-120kg-82, agency: Pro Sports). The last time (17) he played at Isidro Metapan in Salvadorean Liga MB. Haiti missed last season and had one year break from professional basketball.
