Former international Forward Esteban Martinez (192-F-87) put on an amazing game in the last round for Santiago and that's him to receive a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 17.
The 29-year old forward had the game-high 34 points adding three rebounds for Santiago in his team's victory, helping them to beat Camaguey (#7, 1-16) 81-66. Santiago maintains the 5th position in Cuban LSB. Santiago is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 7-10 record. In the team's last game Martinez had a remarkable 68.4% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at Santiago, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Martinez has impressive league stats. He is league's best scorer averaging so far 28.3ppg. Martinez is in league's top in assists (7th best: 0.4apg) and averages solid 2.6spg and 56.4% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 33-year old swingman Elvis Pons (194-G/F-83) of Guantanamo. Pons impressed basketball fans with 31 points and 8 rebounds. Bad luck as Guantanamo lost that game 65-73 to the higher-ranked Capitalinos (#4, 11-6). Guantanamo are still at the very bottom. 17 lost games are too many considering they did not win any game. Pons is a newcomer at Guantanamo and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 18.6ppg (#6). He also registered 5.7 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was another Santiago's star - Roigelis Ochoa (190-G-93). Ochoa scored 14 points and grabbed ten rebounds. He was another key player of Santiago, helping his team with a 81-66 easy win against slightly lower-ranked Camaguey (#7, 1-16). The chances of Santiago ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 10 games, recording just seven victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Ochoa could help Santiago to bring them higher in the standings. Ochoa has a great season in Cuba. After 18 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 6.7rpg (3rd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Osmel Oliva (178-PG-87) of Pinar del Rio - 21 points and 4 rebounds
5. Yosniel Moralez) of Matanzas - 16 points and 6 rebounds
6. Luis Bueno) of Santiago - 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists
7. Andy Boffil (190-G/F-82) of Villa Clara - 22 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Yoel Cubillas (204-C-94) of Villa Clara - 7 points and 8 rebounds
9. Carlos Villegas (197-G-94) of Camaguey - 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists
10. Yoanis Baldo (191-F-89) of Camaguey - 8 points and 13 rebounds

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
