23-year old power forward Jasul Rivero (203-F/C-93) had a great game in the last round for Capitalinos and receives a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 19. He had the game-high 25 points adding seven rebounds for Capitalinos in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Santiago (#5, 8-11) 62-61. Capitalinos is placed at 3rd position in Cuban league. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Capitalinos will need more victories to improve their 13-6 record. In the team's last game Rivero had a remarkable five three-pointers out of 11 attempts. He has many years of experience at Capitalinos, through which he has constantly improved. Jasul Rivero averages this season 12.3ppg.
Second best performed player last round was Yoel Cubillas (204-C-94) of top-ranked Villa Clara. He is international center in his first season at Villa Clara. In the last game Cubillas recorded impressive double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds. Bad luck as Villa Clara lost that game 57-72 to slightly lower-ranked Pinar del Rio (#2, 14-6). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Villa Clara still maintains its place as the top team in the standings, even despite this loss. It was just his team's 3rd loss this season, while they won 17 other games. Cubillas is a newcomer at Villa Clara and quickly became one of team's most reliable players.
Third place about best performers goes to guard Tomas Blanco (186-G-90) of league's second-best Pinar del Rio. Blanco scored 23 points. He was a key player of Pinar del Rio, leading his team to a 72-57 easy win against #1 ranked Villa Clara. Pinar del Rio needs these victories very badly if they think about taking over top position in the standings. Their record at this point is 14 victories and 6 lost games. Blanco has a very solid season. In 16 games in Cuba he scored 7.4ppg.
Other top performing players last week: 4. Yaudelier Suarez (193-F-91) of Pinar del Rio - 14 points and 6 rebounds 5. Vanier Reyes (193-G-83) of Ciego de Avila - 8 points and 12 rebounds 6. Esteban Martinez (192-F-87) of Santiago - 24 points and 3 rebounds 7. Dainier Martinez (184-G-96) of Ciego de Avila - 12 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists 8. Reider Giron (188-G/F-91) of Santiago - 14 points and 3 rebounds 9. Osvaldo Perez) of Villa Clara - 17 points and 3 rebounds 10. Abel Font (206-C-97) of Capitalinos - 8 points and 10 rebounds
The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
