Carlos Payano (195-F/G-70, college: Dowling) (195-F/G-70, college:
Dowling)'s three-pointer with four seconds left gave the Dominicans the
final advantage in a see-saw battle with Mexico. The DR led 89-85 with
2:10 remaining, but five straight free throws by Omar Quintero (182-G-81)
put Mexico back on top. After the Dominican republic reclaimed the lead on
two "Grillo" Vargas free throws, Horacio Llamas (211-C-73), who had
struggled all night (6/19 FG, 7 turnovers), hit a three to put Mexico
ahead 93-91 and set up Payano's heroics. Mexico will regret their 25
turnovers, which offset a 36-22 rebounding edge. The Dominicans will get a
chance at revenge in the final--they have unfinished business with both
Puerto Rico (96-60 defeat on Thursday) and the Virgin Islands (eliminated
the DR from 2001 Centrobasket.

Dominican Republic won their Centrobasket opener against a
tougher-than-expected Guatemalan team. The DR closed a very tight first
half with a 12-4 run to lead 37-30 at the break. The Dominicans extended
the lead to 55-42 and looked on the verge of pulling away, but Guatemala,
through a spectacular shooting performance from Joaquin Ortiz (6
second-half three-pointers) pulled to 60-55 early in the fourth quarter. A
pair of three-pointers from Henry Lalane finally broke the Guatemalan
momentum, and a strong second-half showing from Carlos Payano kept
Guatemala at bay. Jose "Grillo" Vargas scored 15 points, mostly in the
first half, in his return to the national team. Guatemala can be proud of
their showing, but will need better shooting from Thomas Gillespie and
Juan Pablo Trigueno (combined 9/31) against Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
