Trevor Ariza selected the top Dominican playing abroad in last week's games - Nov 14, 2012

We bring you last week's top performances from Dominicans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international forward Trevor Ariza (203-85, agency: David Lee services, college: UCLA, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Washington Wizards (0-6) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Ariza's very good performance the Washington Wizards were badly defeated 92-76 on the road by the Charlotte Bobcats. He was the top scorer with 19 points. Ariza also added 6 rebounds. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Ariza has relatively good stats this year: 8.2ppg, 4.3rpg, 2.3apg, 2.3spg, 2FGP: 38.2%, 3FGP: 27.8%. He has a dual citizenship: Dominican Republic and American. Ariza played for the Dominican Republic senior national team seven years ago. Strangely he has never played in Dominican Republic.

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard Sammy Mejia (198-83, college: De Paul, currently plays in Turkey). Mejia was the major contributor in a Banvit BK's victory against the tenth-ranked Mersin (1-3) 71-60 in the Turkish TBL on Sunday night. He had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 11 rebounds. Mejia also added 7 assists in 30 minutes. Banvit Basketbol Kulubu (4-1) is placed fifth in the TBL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Mejia has relatively solid stats: 11.4ppg, 5.6rpg, 3.2apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 54.5%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 66.7% in the five games he played so far. He played for the Dominican Republic national team in 2005.

   #3. The Dominican Republic player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Eulis Baez (198-82, college: W.Illinois, currently plays in Spain). He managed to help Herbalife Gran Canaria 2014 to win against the 15th-ranked Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (1-6) crushing them 73-52 in the Spanish ACB on Sunday night. Baez recorded 5 points. Herbalife Gran Canaria 2014 (5-2) is placed fifth in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Baez averages: 5.0ppg, 5.2rpg, 2FGP: 52.9%. He played for the Dominican Republic national team three years ago.

   #4. An experienced swingman Jeff Greer (196-79, college: Rutgers, currently plays in France) was not able to help Strasbourg IG (4-2) in their game against Poitiers (2-4) in the French ProA. Greer scored 6 points in 27 minutes. Strasbourg IG lost 70-80 on the opponent's court to the much lower-ranked (#11) Poitiers. They ended the series of four consecutive victories. It's Greer's first season with the team. Greer is currently sixth on the list of best rebounders and also on the list of best passers (sixth place). This year his overall stats are: 5.2ppg and 3.7rpg in the six games. Greer is another player who holds two passports: Dominican Republic and American. He used to play for the Dominican Republic national team back in 2009. Greer played also for Cocolos de San Pedro de Macoris in Dominican Republic league.

   #5. Former U17 international guard Rayner Moquete (185-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Binghamton in their last game on Sunday. Despite Moquete's good performance the Binghamton was defeated 58-49 at home by the Brown University. He scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Moquete has reliable stats this season: 13.3ppg, 1.9rpg, 2.3apg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Dominican Republic U17 national team five years ago.

   #6. Power forward Josh Asselin (210-78, college: Michigan, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help the league outsider Assignia Manresa (0-7) in their game against Regal FC Barcelona (4-3) in the Spanish ACB. Asselin recorded 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The bottom-ranked Assignia Manresa was crushed 89-47 in Barcelona by the much higher-ranked Regal FC (#9). So far Assignia Manresa lost all seven games in the Regular Season. Asselin's stats this season are: 10.1ppg and 3.3rpg. He has both American and Dominican Republic nationalities. Asselin is a former international player as he played for the Dominican Republic senior team six years ago. He used to play for Naco in Dominican Republic league.


The list of other players, who all have Dominican Republic passport but never been selected to any of Dominican Republic national teams:

   #1. Alfred Horford (208-F/C-86, college: Florida, currently plays in NBA) led Atlanta Hawks to a 3-point victory over the Indiana Pacers (3-5) 89-86 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Horford scored 16 points, had 9 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 33 minutes. The Atlanta Hawks have 3-3 record this season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Horford's sixth year with the team. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Horford averages: 14.8ppg, 8.7rpg and 2.5apg in the six games he played so far.

   #2. Experienced Ricardo Greer (197-F/G-78, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in France), who plays in the French ProA could not help Strasbourg IG (4-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Greer's good performance Strasbourg IG was defeated 80-70 on the road by the much lower-ranked Poitiers (#11). He was the second best scorer with 11 points. Greer also added 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Greer is currently sixth on the league's list of best rebounders and also on the list of best passers (sixth place). He has very reliable stats this season: 12.8ppg, 7.3rpg, 5.2apg and 1.3spg. Greer has a dual citizenship: Dominican Republic and American. Apparently he has never played in Dominican Republic.

   #3. Emmanuel Quezada (188-PG-85, college: USF, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB was not able to help FIATC Joventut (4-3) in their last game. Despite Quezada's good performance FIATC Joventut lost in an overtime 84-89 at home to the higher-ranked (#8) Blancos de Rueda. He recorded 12 points in only a mere 14 minutes. Quezada has reliable stats this year: 12.9ppg, 3.3rpg and 3.0apg in the seven games. He is another player who holds two passports: Dominican Republic and American. Apparently Quezada has never played in Dominican Republic.

   #4. Adris Deleon (180-G-84, college: E.Washington, currently plays in Australia) was not able to secure a victory for Wollongong Hawks (5-1) in their game against Kings (4-4) in the Australian NBL. He scored 9 points (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). But Wollongong Hawks were defeated 65-51 in Sydney by the lower-ranked Kings (#4). It was Wollongong Hawks' first loss after five consecutive victories. Deleon is currently sixth on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of most steals (third place). This season he has very high stats. Deleon averages: 15.8ppg, 3.3rpg, 2.5apg and 1.7spg.

   #5. Larry Turner (210-C/F-82, college: Tennessee St., currently plays in Greece) contributed to an Apollon Patras' victory against the closely-ranked Kolossos (3-2) 80-67 in the Greek A1 on Sunday night. He scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. AS Apollon Patrasis placed sixth in the A1. This year Turner's total stats are: 6.8ppg and 3.4rpg in the five games. He has both American and Dominican Republic nationalities. Apparently Turner has never played in Dominican Republic.

   #6. Francisco Garcia (201-F/G-81, college: Louisville, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Sacramento Kings in their game against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. He cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. Garcia scored only 2 points. His team were defeated 97-86 in the NBA. This season Garcia averages just 1.8ppg.

   #7. Tjoe de Paula (185-PG-81, agency: Court Side, currently plays in Holland), who plays in the Dutch Eredivisie couldn't help Leeuwarden (3-5) in their last game. Despite his good performance Leeuwarden lost 77-92 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#8) Weert. de Paula scored 13 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 33 minutes. de Paula has reliable stats this year: 14.3ppg, 1.8rpg, 3.5apg and 1.5spg in the four games. He also holds two passports: Dominican Republic and Dutch.

   #8. Charlie Villanueva (209-F-84, college: Connecticut, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Detroit Pistons in their game against the Houston Rockets in the NBA. Villanueva cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points. It was his first game for Detroit Pistons this season. His team were defeated 96-82 in the NBA. Villanueva holds both American and Dominican Republic passports. Apparently he has never played in Dominican Republic.

   #9. Ruben Guillandeaux (198-G-88, college: La Salle, currently plays in Cyprus) couldn't help AEL in their game against AEK in the Cypriot Division A, despite his very good performance in Friday night's game. Guillandeaux scored 16 points and added 8 assists in 40 minutes. But his team lost 78-84. Guillandeaux is ranked sixth on the list of the best passers in the league with 4.0apg. He also averaged so far 12.7ppg and 5.3rpg in the three games. Guillandeaux holds both American and Dominican Republic passports. Apparently he has never played in Dominican Republic.

   #10. James Feldeine (193-G-88, college: Quinnipiac, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Baloncesto Fuenlabrada in their game against G.Canaria 2014 in the Spanish ACB. Feldeine recorded 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. His team was crushed by 21 points 73-52. He has reliable stats this season: 13.3ppg, 1.9rpg, 2.3apg and 1.3spg. Feldeine holds both American and Dominican Republic passports. Apparently he has never played in Dominican Republic.

Ostioneros de Guaymas (CIBACOPA) signed 35-year old Dominican guard Luis Flores (188-81, college: Manhattan, agency: 011 Sports). He moved there from BC Nokia in Finnish Korisliiga where he started the season, but left. In 5 games he had very impressive stats: 18.6ppg, 4.8rpg, 3.4apg and 1.0spg this season. The last summer Flores played at Guaros (LPB) in Venezuelan league. In 22 games he recorded 8.7ppg, 2.1rpg, 1.4apg and 1.0spg. Retiro 23 was the winner in the 2016 edition of Torneo Superior de San Pedro de Macoris, as the team completed a 2-0 sweep over Centro in the Finals, thanks to a victory, 106-83, in a tournament dedicated to Danilo Medina, President of the Dominican Republic. Garra Canera de Navolato (CIBACOPA) landed 28-year old American forward Rashad Bishop (198-100kg-88, college: Cincinnati). He moved there from Mauricio Baez in District National in Dominican Republic where he started the season. In 2012 (a year after he left the college) Bishop was drafted by Los Angeles D-Fenders (D-League) in fourth round (64th overall).
