The GIE Maile Matrix announced their 12-man Cup roster for the 2017 Copa Mitchell Cup in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Jermaine Barnes (193-G/F-83, college: Point, GA, agency: Gamble Sports Management) was named captain and will return to professional basketball after a two year absence (injury). Barnes is not stranger to the Dominican Republic. In 2012 he averaged a league best 26.7 points per game in San Pedro. In 2013 he signed with Pueblo Nuevo before being signed by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014. Before his injure he played last for Yenicami (Cyprus). In 20 games he average 20.4ppg, 8 rebounds and a league best 6.7 assists.

The Matrix will carry 12 players total. They need extra man power due to injuries in their lineup. Coach Travis McAvene has added Asian star Terrence Shannon (203-F-79, college: Elgin CC) and Latin American standout Cory Bradford (191-G-78, college: Illinois) to the roster. "With Cory and Terrence I'm confident in our chances of winning", said McAvene. Having a crew of vets makes me feel very good about 2017. Shannon will be on every teams wish list in February. Like Bradford; Shannon has dominated the world it seems. He was named MVP in S. Korea three times with a career average of just over 26 points per game. Last season he joined Plaze of the Santiago League. He averaged a team best 20 points along with 11 rebounds.

Keith Closs (224-C-76, college: Cent.Conn.St.) and Freddie Williams (188-G-87, college: Clayton St., agency: Gamble Sports Management) will return for 2017. Last season Closs was named Latinbasket.com All-CMC Top Defender. He led the event in rebounding (11.4rpg) and blocks (5.1bpg). Williams was a major part of the 2015, 2016 championship run. In 2015 he was named Latinbasket All-CMC 1st Team.

The Matrix have won the last two Cup Tournaments in Santiago. The Dominicans will be sure to bring the best back this spring.
