Here is the weekly review of the top performing Dominican Republic players, who play currently abroad.

Sammy Mejia
Sammy Mejia
#1. This week's number one is an experienced former international swingman Sammy Mejia (198-83, college: De Paul, currently plays in Turkey). Mejia led Tofas to a victory over the fourth-ranked Banvit (15-6) 88-83 in the Turkish BSL last Saturday. He was MVP of the game. Mejia scored 25 points, had 9 rebounds and dished 5 assists. Tofas Bursa (10-11) is placed ninth in the BSL. Mejia has relatively good stats this season: 14.6ppg, 5.2rpg, 3.0apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 61.7%(66-107), 3FGP: 44.7% and FT: 74.2%. He has a dual citizenship: Dominican Republic and American. Mejia played for the Dominican Republic senior national team twelve years ago. Strangely he has never played in Dominican Republic.

Trevor Ariza
Trevor Ariza
#2. Second place goes to former international forward Trevor Ariza (203-85, college: UCLA, currently plays in NBA). He contributed to an easy victory against the Chicago Bulls (32-35) crushing them 115-94 in the NBA last Friday. Ariza recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds. The Houston Rockets have a solid 46-21 record this season. Ariza has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 11.5ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.2apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 53.6%, 3FGP: 34.8% and FT: 73.3%. Ariza is another player who holds two passports: Dominican Republic and American. He played for the Dominican Republic national team in 2005. Apparently Ariza has never played in Dominican Republic.

Jeff Greer
Jeff Greer
#3. The Dominican Republic player who performed third best last week abroad was former international shooting guard Jeff Greer (196-79, college: Rutgers, currently plays in France). Greer contributed to a 3-point Poitiers' victory against the closely-ranked Nantes (11-11) 78-75 in the French ProB (second division) last Tuesday. He scored 6 points in 16 minutes. Union Poitiers Basket 86 (11-11) is placed seventh in the ProB. It's Greer's fourth season with the team. This year Greer's overall stats are: 2.9ppg, 1.5rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 27.8%, 3FGP: 27.0% and FT: 66.7% in 16 games he played so far. He has both American and Dominican Republic nationalities. Greer played for the Dominican Republic national team eight years ago. He used to play for Cocolos de San Pedro de Macoris in Dominican Republic league.

Jose Cabrera
Jose Cabrera
#4. Power forward Jose Cabrera (206-84, currently plays in Spain). Cabrera could not help Mataro (7-13) to beat Castellbisbal (11-9). He scored only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The 14th-placed Mataro (7-13) was badly defeated 108-88 on the road by the much higher-ranked Castellbisbal (#5) in the Group C-A. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. Cabrera's total stats this season are: 7.9ppg, 6.6rpg and 1.1apg. He used to play for the Dominican Republic national team back in 2006.

The list of other players, who all have Dominican Republic passport but never been selected to any of Dominican Republic national teams:

#1. Karl-Anthony Towns (213-F/C-95, college: Kentucky, currently plays in NBA) led Minnesota Timberwolves to a victory over the Washington Wizards (41-25) 119-104 in the NBA in Monday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Towns had a double-double by scoring 39 points and getting 13 rebounds in 35 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. The Minnesota Timberwolves have 28-38 record this season. Towns has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 24.5ppg, 12.2rpg, 2.8apg and 1.4bpg in 66 games he played so far. Towns has a dual citizenship: Dominican Republic and American. Strangely he has never played in Dominican Republic.

#2. Eloy Vargas (211-C-88, agency: Duran International, college: Kentucky, currently plays in Argentina) contributed to a GECR Indalo's victory against the seventh-ranked La Union (9-22) 99-95 in the Argentinian LigaA on Monday night. Vargas had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds in 23 minutes. Gimnasia-Indalo Esgr.Comodoro Rivadavia (20-21) is placed fourth in Sur group. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. It's Vargas' first season with the team. This year he has relatively solid stats: 13.4ppg and 7.1rpg in 18 games.

#3. Juan Miguel Suero (198-SG-93, currently plays in Venezuela) could not help Gaiteros (2-4) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Suero's very good performance the third-placed Gaiteros (2-4) was edged 107-106 at home by the lower-ranked Panteras (#5) in the Western Conference. He was the top scorer with 43 points. Suero also added 6 rebounds. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Suero has very high stats. He averages: 25.7ppg, 5.5rpg, 2.7apg and 1.7spg.

#4. Gelvis Solano (185-G-94, agency: Basket Management Solutions, college: Merrimack, currently plays in Argentina) was the main contributor in Echague's surprising victory against the fourth-ranked Instituto (23-18) 109-100 in the Argentinian LigaA last Sunday. Solano was the best player in that game. He scored 35 points (!!!), grabbed 4 boards, handed out 7 passes and blocked 2 shots in 36 minutes; not bad, considering it's only Solano's third season in pro basketball. Atletico Echague Parana (7-32) is placed tenth in Norte group. It was his team's first victory after four consecutive loses. It's Solano's first year with the team. He has very impressive stats this season: 19.4ppg, 4.0rpg, 4.1apg and 2.0spg in 27 games.

#5. James Feldeine (193-G-88, college: Quinnipiac, currently plays in Euroleague) was not able to help Panathinaikos in their game against Zalgiris (11-14) in the Euroleague. Feldeine recorded 7 points. Panathinaikos was defeated 64-58 on the road by the lower-ranked Zalgiris (#10). This season Feldeine averages: 7.1ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.3apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Dominican Republic and American. Apparently Feldeine has never played in Dominican Republic.

#6. Alfred Horford (208-F/C-86, college: Florida, currently plays in NBA) helped Boston Celtics win their game against the Chicago Bulls crushing them 100-80 in the NBA in Sunday night's game. He scored 12 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, passed 6 assists and added 2 blocks in 32 minutes. Horford has very impressive stats this year: 13.9ppg, 6.6rpg, 4.9apg and 1.4bpg in 53 games.

#7. Edgar Sosa (190-PG-88, college: Louisville, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams Juvecaserta (9-13) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Juvecaserta lost 79-85 in Cantu to the higher-ranked (#12) AV Cantu. Sosa was the second best scorer with 20 points. He also added 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 34 minutes. Sosa has very impressive stats this year: 19.3ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.9apg and 1.2spg in 22 games. He has both American and Dominican Republic nationalities. Sosa used to play for Leones de Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic league.

#8. O'Darien Bassett (189-G-86, college: Troy, currently plays in South Korea) was the major contributor in a Goyang Orions' victory against the closely-ranked Samsung Thunders 86-79 in the South Korean KBL in Sunday night's game. He scored 17 points and added 7 assists. This season Bassett has relatively solid stats: 13.9ppg, 3.6rpg and 4.3apg. He also holds two passports: Dominican Republic and American. Bassett used to play for Huracanes del Atlantico in Dominican Republic league.

#9. Juan Guerrero (201-F-93, also represented by Basket Management Solutions, currently plays in Venezuela) couldn't help Toros (0-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the fifth-placed Toros lost 81-88 on their home court in Maracay to the leading Cocodrilos in the Western Conference. Guerrero had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 3 blocks in 24 minutes. This year Guerrero has relatively solid stats: 14.8ppg, 9.3rpg and 1.8spg in four games.

#10. Lewis Clinch (191-G-87, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Iceland) helped Grindavik win their game against one of league's weakest teams Skallagrimur 101-89 in the Icelandic Dominos League on Thursday night. He was the best player in that game. Clinch recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 8 assists. This season Clinch has very high stats. He averages: 21.1ppg, 6.9rpg, 5.1apg and 1.2spg. Clinch holds both American and Dominican Republic passports. Interesting that he has never played in Dominican Republic.
