SAN SALVADOR (Central American Games 2017) - With two weekend training camps the first weeks of January, the El Salvador men's national team, under the leadership of American head coach Alan Walls, tipped off their preparations for the 2017 Central American Games slated to take place in Managua, Nicaragua December 3-17.

The first training camp was held January 7th and 8th at the National Gymnasium Aldolfo Pineda in the capital city of San Salvador with 25 members of the national federation's program 'Project 25/25.' Project 25/25 is a program implemented in 2016 by Walls to identify the top 25 players from around the country ages 25 and under (18-25) and to train and development them not only for the 2017 CAG but also future national team competitions over the next 10-15 years. Members of the project were selected through five regional talent scouting camps conducted in June and July of 2016.

The training camp consisted of two practices on the 7th and one practice and intra-squad scrimmages on the 8th. Of the 24 players that participated in the first camp 13 were invited to participate in the second camp where eight more experienced national team members over the age of 25 joined them.

The second training camp, the following weekend, also consisted of two practices on Saturday and a third practice Sunday morning followed by a full intra-squad game with FIBA sanctioned referees.

The Salvadoran Basketball Federation will conduct a total of eight similar training camps throughout the year heading into the Games ranging from two, to three, to five days during breaks in their professional league (Major League Basketball) which runs for a total of eight months divided into two seasons, as well as four weeks of practices and international competition during the month of June and six weeks of practices and international friendlies in October and November prior to the games.

The basketball competition of the 2017 Central American Games will run December 4th through the 8th.
