Liga MB Round 16: Halcones lose to Cojute in the biggest upset of the week - Mar 19, 2017

The most shocking disappointment of round 16 in the Liga MB was a road defeat of higher ranked Halcones (7-4) to eighth ranked Cojute (5-4) 104-93. It ended the four-game winning streak of Halcones. They outrebounded Halcones 56-43 including a 38-27 advantage in defensive rebounds. Cojute looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Americans were the main players on the court. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Brandon Golden (193, college: Midwestern St.) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 26 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists and forward Scott Sill (206-92, college: Delaware St.) who added 27 points and 18 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side Jeffery Moss (193-93, college: Murray St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 13 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cojute have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to seventh place. Halcones at the other side keep the fourth position with four games lost. Cojute are looking forward to face league's second-placed Brujos Izalco on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Halcones will have a break next round.

Even a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds by American forward Tobias Dowdell (201-90, college: Alders.-Broad.) did not help to save the game for Santa Ana. Undefeated Santa Tecla have an impressive ten-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 10-0 record. Santa Ana lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth place with eight games lost. Santa Tecla will play against Arcense (#14) in San Salvador in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Santa Ana will have a break next round.
An interesting game took place in La Union where higher ranked Sonsonate (6-5) was upset on the court of tenth ranked El Rapido (4-5) 77-72 on Saturday. Manuel Guevara fired 39 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Yoan Haiti produced a double-double by scoring 18 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. El Rapido maintains tenth position with 4-5 record. Newly promoted Sonsonate keeps the sixth place with five games lost. El Rapido will meet higher ranked Canarios (#9) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Sonsonate will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 16 Canarios lost to Denver-FAS on the opponent's court 94-102. San Miguel unfortunately lost to Isidro Metapan in a home game 75-80.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 23 points and 18 rebounds by Reginald Brown of Canarios.

Santa Ana - Santa Tecla 81-101

Liga MB top team - Santa Tecla (10-0) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed thirteenth ranked Santa Ana (2-8) 101-81. Santa Tecla players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. The winners were led by Cuban Oreste Torres (204-87) who scored that evening 29 points and 9 rebounds and Cuban Lisvan Valdez (200-88) supported him with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Santa Tecla's coach used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Even a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds by American forward Tobias Dowdell (201-90, college: Alders.-Broad.) did not help to save the game for Santa Ana. His fellow American import center Andre Smith (208, college: William Jessup) added 18 points and 12 rebounds for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Santa Tecla have an impressive ten-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 10-0 record. Santa Ana lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth place with eight games lost. There was a minor upset in San Salvador where 7th ranked Canarios (5-5) were defeated by ninth ranked Denver-FAS (5-5) 102-94 on Saturday. Americans were the main players on the court also this time. Point guard Anthony Brown (193-89, college: Imperial Valley JC) fired 31 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. Guard Thomas Alexander (197, college: Arkansas Tech) chipped in a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds. Five Denver-FAS players scored in double figures. Guard Wali Hepburn (193-89, college: Lock Haven) produced 30 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists and center Reginald Brown (202-91) added 23 points and 18 rebounds respectively for lost side. Denver-FAS moved-up to eighth place, which they share with defeated Canarios. Denver-FAS will meet at home San Miguel (#12) in the next round. Canarios will play against El Rapido (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

San Miguel - Isidro Metapan 75-80

Very predictable result when third ranked Isidro Metapan (8-2) defeated on the road 12th ranked San Miguel (3-7) 80-75 on Saturday. Spanish-American forward Duane James (196-83, college: Binghamton) fired a double-double by scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Venezuelan-Colombian forward Michael Hinestroza-Javes (208-90, college: UALR) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 17 rebounds. James is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American point guard Jordan Johnson (183-92, college: Tenn Tech) produced 22 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and his fellow American import forward Nduka Ezeamii (203, college: Avila) added 24 points and 7 rebounds respectively for lost side. Isidro Metapan maintains third position with 8-2 record having just two points less than leader Santa Tecla. San Miguel lost third consecutive game. They keep the twelfth place with seven games lost. Isidro Metapan will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. San Miguel will play against Denver-FAS (#8) in San Salvador and hope to secure a win.

An interesting game took place in La Union where higher ranked Sonsonate (6-5) was upset on the court of tenth ranked El Rapido (4-5) 77-72 on Saturday. Strangely Sonsonate outrebounded El Rapido 51-35 including 17 on the offensive glass. Panamanian Manuel Guevara (186-81) fired 39 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Panamanian Daniel King (203-87, college: Texas Southern) chipped in a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. Yoan Haiti produced a double-double by scoring 18 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists and American-Panamanian forward Adalberto Rojas (198-86) added 16 points and 14 rebounds respectively for lost side. Five Sonsonate players scored in double figures. El Rapido maintains tenth position with 4-5 record. Newly promoted Sonsonate keeps the sixth place with five games lost. Quezaltepeque Biomedical (Liga MB) landed experienced 37-year old former international center Julio Mancia (202-80) from Santa Tecla BC. In 27 Liga MB games he averaged 3.8ppg and 3.5rpg last season.
