Liga MB Round 19: Santa Tecla lose their first game against Quezaltepeque - Mar 25, 2017

The most surprising game was the first loss of Santa Tecla (11-1) on the court of seventh ranked Quezaltepeque on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by Quezaltepeque 86-77. It ended at the same time the 11-game winning streak of Santa Tecla. Quezaltepeque looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. It was a great evening for American Quincy Scates (197-89, college: Tenn Wesleyan) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 27 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. His fellow American import point guard Shahmel Brackett (183-91, college: UNC Pembroke) helped adding 19 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists. At the losing side center Carlos Arias (200-89) responded with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 15 rebounds. Quezaltepeque (7-5) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Denver-FAS. Santa Tecla at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. They share it with Brujos Izalco. Quezaltepeque is looking forward to face San Miguel (#12) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Santa Tecla will play against Denver-FAS (#6) and is hoping to win this game.
Bottom-ranked Giants (0-11) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 11th consecutive match to fourteenth ranked Arcense (3-10) 78-69. Americans were the main players on the court. It was an exceptional evening for point guard Danny Lawhorn (183, college: Midwestern St.) who led the winners and scored 43 points (!!!), 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Louis Birdsong accounted for 14 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks. Power forward James Milton (203, college: Stevenson) came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds for Giants in the defeat. Arcense moved-up to thirteenth place. Giants at the other side still closes the standings with 11 games lost. Arcense will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Giants will play on the road against El Rapido (#11) in La Union and hope to get finally their first victory.
An interesting game took place in Chalchuapa where 8th ranked Cojute (6-6) was upset on the court of eleventh ranked 11 Lobos (5-7) 114-102 on Friday. Shawn Hampton fired a triple-double by scoring 34 points (!!!), 12 rebounds and 13 assists for the winners. Brandon Golden produced 47 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds for lost side. 11 Lobos moved-up to tenth place. Loser Cojute keeps the eighth position with six games lost. They share it with Sonsonate. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

In the last game of round 19 Santa Ana lost to Brujos Izalco on the opponent's court 68-80.

11 Lobos - Cojute 114-102

An interesting game took place in Chalchuapa where 8th ranked Cojute (6-6) was upset on the court of eleventh ranked 11 Lobos (5-7) 114-102 on Friday. 11 Lobos outrebounded Cojute 53-39 including a 39-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by Cojute's players. American point guard Shawn Hampton (187) fired a triple-double by scoring 34 points (!!!), 12 rebounds and 13 assists for the winners. Haitian Joseph Antoine (203-84, college: Union, TN) chipped in a double-double by scoring 23 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Four 11 Lobos players scored in double figures. American guard Brandon Golden (193, college: Midwestern St.) produced 47 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds and the other American import forward Scott Sill (206-92, college: Delaware St.) added 27 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks respectively for lost side. 11 Lobos moved-up to tenth place. Loser Cojute keeps the eighth position with six games lost. They share it with Sonsonate. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Forward Louis Birdsong (198-88, college: George Mason) accounted for 14 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks for the winning side. Power forward James Milton (203, college: Stevenson) came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds and guard Macari Brooks (190-92, college: Pikeville) added 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for Giants in the defeat. Very expected game when 13th ranked Santa Ana (2-10) was defeated on the road by second ranked Brujos Izalco (11-1) 80-68 on Thursday. Brujos Izalco forced 25 Santa Ana turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Americans were the main players on the court also this time. Guard Christopher Blake (197-88, college: Detroit Mercy) fired 33 points (!!!), 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Forward Garland McArthur (197-88, college: Voorhees) chipped in a double-double by scoring 19 points and 14 rebounds. Four Brujos Izalco players scored in double figures. Forward Tobias Dowdell (201-90, college: Alders.-Broad.) produced 26 points and 7 rebounds and center Andre Smith (208, college: William Jessup) added 18 points and 15 rebounds respectively for lost side. Brujos Izalco have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They used an opportunity after Santa Tecla lost their game and moved up joining them at the top position. Santa Ana lost sixth consecutive game. They dropped to the fourteenth place with ten games lost. Brujos Izalco will meet Halcones (#4) in the next round. Santa Ana will have a break next round.

American Raymond Miller (204-F/C-88) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Quezaltepeque and that's him to receive a Latinbasket.com Liga MB Player of the Week award for round 23.
