Liga MB Round 23: #1 Santa Tecla is defeated by Halcones - Apr 6, 2017

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Santa Tecla (13-2) in Sonzacate on Tuesday night. Visitors were rolled over by fourth ranked Halcones (9-5) 89-66. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Santa Tecla. Halcones dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Tecla's 26. Halcones forced 23 Santa Tecla turnovers and outrebounded them 52-40 including 16 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Halcones made 9 blocks. It was a great evening for American Jeffery Moss (193-93, college: Murray St.) who led his team to a victory scoring 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. A Brewer helped adding 24 points and 8 rebounds. Cuban Oreste Torres (204-87) responded with 24 points. Santa Tecla's coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Halcones maintains fourth place with 9-5 record. Santa Tecla at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. They share it with Brujos Izalco. Halcones are looking forward to face Sonsonate (#5) in the next round. Santa Tecla will play against Santa Ana (#13) and is hoping to win this game.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Isidro Metapan (10-4) against fifteenth ranked Giants (2-12) on Wednesday night. Visiting Isidro Metapan was edged by Giants in a tough game in San Salvador 90-92. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Macari Brooks (190-92, college: Pikeville) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 30 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. James Milton accounted for 22 points and 16 rebounds. Venezuelan guard Edwin Mijares (186-94) came up with 30 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for Isidro Metapan in the defeat. Giants maintains fifteenth place with 2-12 record. Isidro Metapan at the other side keeps the third position with four games lost. Giants will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Isidro Metapan will play against Denver-FAS and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Quezaltepeque (8-7) played at the court of sixth ranked Sonsonate (9-6). Sonsonate managed to secure a 7-point victory 81-74 on Tuesday. The best player for the winners was Yoan Haiti who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds. Quincy Scates produced 26 points and 8 rebounds for the guests. Sonsonate have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fifth place. Loser Quezaltepeque dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. They share it with Denver-FAS. Sonsonate will meet at home higher ranked Halcones (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Quezaltepeque will play against Arcense in San Salvador and hope to secure a win.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from San Salvador: Denver-FAS (#9) and Arcense (#14). Arcense was defeated at home 61-71 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. Olaniyr Adedoyin orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds. Denver-FAS (8-7) moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Quezaltepeque. Arcense at the other side dropped to the thirteenth position with 12 games lost. Denver-FAS's next round opponent will be higher ranked Isidro Metapan (#3) on the road and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Arcense will play against Quezaltepeque (#7) and hope to win that game.

In the last two games of round 23 Canarios won against Santa Ana on the opponent's court 98-93. 11 Lobos unfortunately lost to Brujos Izalco in a home game 78-84.

Santa Ana - Canarios 93-98

Very expected game when 13th ranked Santa Ana (3-12) was defeated at home by eighth ranked Canarios (8-6) 98-93. Americans were the main players on the court. Guard Wali Hepburn (193-89, college: Lock Haven) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds. Point guard David Lawson (185-89, college: Reinhardt) contributed with 34 points (!!!) and 7 assists for the winners. Lawson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Forward Tobias Dowdell (201-90, college: Alders.-Broad.) answered with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 19 rebounds and guard Malcolm Tatum (188, college: Alders.-Broad.) added 23 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists in the effort for Santa Ana. Four Santa Ana players scored in double figures. Canarios moved-up to sixth place. Santa Ana at the other side keeps the thirteenth position with 12 games lost. Canarios' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Brujos Izalco at home and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Santa Ana will play against the league's leader Santa Tecla (#1) and hope to win that game.

Very predictable result in Chalchuapa where second ranked Brujos Izalco (13-2) defeated 11th ranked 11 Lobos (5-9) 84-78. Brujos Izalco forced 22 11 Lobos turnovers. American center Travis Elliott (203-91, college: Beth.-Cookman) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 15 rebounds. His fellow American import guard Christopher Blake (197-88, college: Detroit Mercy) contributed with 26 points for the winners. Haitian Joseph Antoine (203-84, college: Union, TN) answered with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and American center Marc Montavious (206-90, college: Georgetown, KY) added 15 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks in the effort for 11 Lobos. Four Brujos Izalco and five 11 Lobos players scored in double figures. Brujos Izalco used an opportunity after Santa Tecla lost their game and moved up joining them at the top position. 11 Lobos at the other side keep the eleventh place with nine games lost. Brujos Izalco's next round opponent will be Canarios (#6) in Ahuachapan which should be theoretically an easy game.

El Rapido de La Union (Liga MB) strengthened their roster with addition of 31-year old Cuban power forward Arlen Alorda (198-105kg-86). He played in the summer at Capitalinos in Cuban LSB league. Santa Tecla BC (Liga MB) tabbed experienced 37-year old American (has also Jamaican passport) forward Devin Thompson (199-80, college: St.Peter's). He played in the summer at Asocoacion Baloncesto de Apopa in Salvadorean Liga Superior. In two games he averaged impressive 28.5ppg, 8.0rpg, 3.5apg, 1.5spg and 3.0bpg. Bulldogs won Segunda Categoria Torneo Apertura 2017 as they beat Costa Rica 2-1 in the Final series. In the decisive third game they posted a 93-57 victory. Mario Amaya top-scored for the winners with 26 points and David Amaya Quinteros notched 17. Eduardo Garcia replied with 17 points in a loss.
