Liga MB Round 29: #1 Santa Tecla is defeated by Brujos Izalco - Apr 21, 2017

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Santa Tecla (17-3) on the court of second ranked Brujos Izalco on Tuesday night. Visitors were edged by Brujos Izalco 93-91. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Santa Tecla. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. Brujos Izalco forced 19 Santa Tecla turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Brujos Izalco made 7 blocks. American guard Christopher Blake (198-88, college: Detroit Mercy) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 11 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winners and his fellow American import forward Garland McArthur (197-88, college: Voorhees) chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds. Cuban Oreste Torres (204-87) responded with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Brujos Izalco maintains second place with 15-3 record having 2 victories less than leader Santa Tecla. Santa Tecla at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost. Brujos Izalco are looking forward to face Giants (#14) in San Salvador in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Santa Tecla will play on the road against San Miguel (#15) and is hoping to win this game.

Eleventh ranked 11 Lobos (7-11) crushed at home 14th ranked Giants (4-15) by 25 points 95-70, which is the biggest margin this round on Wednesday night. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Giants. The best player for the winners was Marc Montavious who had a double-double by scoring 21 points, 25 rebounds and 5 blocks. Luis Escoto produced 27 points for the guests. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. 11 Lobos maintains eleventh place with 7-11 record. Loser Giants dropped to the thirteenth position with 15 games lost. They share it with Santa Ana. 11 Lobos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Giants will play against the league's second-placed Brujos Izalco (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 29: Santa Ana lost to Arcense on the opponent's court 66-72. Denver-FAS unfortunately lost to Quezaltepeque in a home game 82-87. Cojute recorded a loss to El Rapido on the road 77-87.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 16 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists by Tyrone Butler of Santa Ana.

Halcones - Isidro Metapan 76-73

Important game to mention about took place in Sonzacate. Fourth ranked Halcones (13-5) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 3rd placed Isidro Metapan (13-5) 76-73 in the game for the third place. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Isidro Metapan. Halcones forced 24 Isidro Metapan turnovers. They brought some defensive toughness making 13 blocks. Everything could happen in San Salvador at the game between two tied teams. Both thirteenth ranked Arcense and 12th ranked Santa Ana had identical 4-14 record. This time Arcense used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Santa Ana 72-66 on Thursday night. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Arcense made 7 blocks. Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was guard Brandon Thompson (193, college: Huston-Tillotson) who had a double-double by scoring 28 points and 13 rebounds. Quezaltepeque shot 26 for 40 from the free-throw line, while Denver-FAS only scored seven points from the stripe. Quezaltepeque forced 22 Denver-FAS turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was Quincy Scates (197-89, college: Tenn Wesleyan) who scored 30 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Forward Nate Drayton (203-91, college: W.Texas A&M) chipped in a double-double by scoring 15 points and 18 rebounds. Four Quezaltepeque players scored in double figures.
