Liga MB Round 9: Quezaltepeque hands first defeat to Halcones - Aug 12, 2017

Undefeated Halcones (6-1) recorded its first loss on the court of fifth ranked Quezaltepeque on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by Quezaltepeque 82-77. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Halcones. Quezaltepeque dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Halcones' 38. The best player for the winners was Honduran guard Alvin Cacho (189-87) who scored 26 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. American power forward Raymond Miller (204-88, college: CS Fullerton) chipped in 20 points and 16 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Puerto Rican guard Jared Ruiz (188-92) who recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points and 12 rebounds. Quezaltepeque (5-2) moved-up to third place, which they share with Canarios. Halcones at the other side keep the second position with one game lost. Quezaltepeque is looking forward to face Cojute (#7) in Cojutepeque in the next round. Halcones will play on the road against Canarios (#3) in Ahuachapan and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Izalco. Fifth ranked Brujos Izalco (5-3) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 6th ranked Cojute (4-5) 78-75 on Wednesday evening. It was a good game for American guard Christopher Blake (196-88, college: Detroit Mercy) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. Anthony Brown contributed with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Robert Kenteh answered with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 26 rebounds and 5 blocks for Cojute. Brujos Izalco maintains fifth place with 5-3 record. Cojute at the other side dropped to the seventh position with five games lost. Brujos Izalco will play against league's second-placed Halcones in Sonzacate in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Cojute will play at home against Quezaltepeque (#4) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Oreste Torres stepped up and scored 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The best for the losing side was Shahmel Brackett with 30 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated Santa Tecla (8-0) have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with a perfect record of 8 victories in a row. Santiagueno lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the eleventh position with five games lost. Santa Tecla will meet Isidro Metapan (#9) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Santiagueno will play against Canarios and hope to win that game.

In the last game of round 9 Arcense was defeated by Santa Ana in a road game 94-81.
The best stats of 9th round was 22 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists by Demarquelle Tabb of Santa Ana.

Santa Ana - Arcense 94-81

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Arcense (2-5) was defeated on the road by seventh ranked Santa Ana (4-1) 94-81 on Friday. Santa Ana looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The game was dominated by American players. Swingman Demarquelle Tabb (196-90, college: Alabama A&M) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!) for the winners and guard Khiry White (190-91, college: Savannah St.) chipped in 29 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was forward Jovany Austin (201-92, college: W.Georgia) with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 20 rebounds and Michael Wilson (-92) scored 30 points and 4 assists. Santa Ana moved-up to sixth place. Loser Arcense keeps the tenth position with five games lost. Santa Ana will meet El Rapido (#8) in the next round. Arcense will play against Quezaltepeque and hope to secure a win.

Santa Tecla dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Santiagueno's 30. Cuban Oreste Torres (204-87) stepped up and scored 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and center Carlos Arias (200-89) chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American point guard Shahmel Brackett (183-91, college: UNC Pembroke) with 30 points and 9 rebounds and Wlliam Brown produced a double-double by scoring 11 points, 19 rebounds and 4 blocks. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Santa Tecla (8-0) have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with a perfect record of 8 victories in a row. Santiagueno lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the eleventh position with five games lost. Important game to mention about took place in Izalco. Fifth ranked Brujos Izalco (5-3) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 6th ranked Cojute (4-5) 78-75 on Wednesday evening. Brujos Izalco forced 26 Cojute turnovers and outrebounded them 63-52 including a 27-14 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Brujos Izalco brought some defensive toughness making 11 blocks. It was a good game for American guard Christopher Blake (196-88, college: Detroit Mercy) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. His fellow American import point guard Anthony Brown (193-90, college: Imperial Valley JC) contributed with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners.
