USA wins the Gold in Cancun - Jun 27, 2011
FINAL
USA - Argentina 104-64
USA won the Gold at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. They smashed Argentina 104-64 in the Big Final to take the first place. The Silver medal belongs to Argentina. It is important to mention that both teams booked a ticket for the next FIBA U17 World Championship. Aaron Gordon (96) shined in USA with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Jahlil Okafor-Benton (96) also was great adding 18 points and 14 boards. Jabari Parker (95) had 14 pts and 7 rebounds, while Justin Jackson (95) added 13 pts to this victory. In Argentina, Alvaro Merlo (170-G-95) delivered 14 pts. Gabriel Deck (195-F-95) had 10 points and 9 boards.
USA started the game strongly making 30-17 lead in the first ten minutes. Nothing has changed after that as USA created 24-13 in the second period for plus 24 at the HT. It was already clear who will take the Gold at this event and second half was just the formality (24-21, 26-13).
USA was the winner of Group B in Cancun with perfect 3-0. They eliminated Canada in the Semis.
Places 3-4
Canada - Puerto Rico 86-65
Canada won the Bronze in Cancun. They outplayed Puerto Rico 86-65 to win this medal at the U16 FIBA Americas championship. Thanks to this victory Canada also booked a spot for the next U17 FIBA World championship. Canada had six players with double-digits in scoring. The leading one was Kevin-Mbezela Zabo (186-G) with 16 pts. Patrick Steeves (95) had 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Christopher McComber (95) added 11 pts and 15 rebs. In the loosing squad, William Cruz (180-G-95) delivered 18 points and Jairo Velez (95) stopped to 11 pts.
Canada had wonderful beginning as they made 26-7 lead in the first ten minutes. They continued with 14-11 after that and 23-16 in Q3. At that time it was already clear that Canada will take the Bronze at this event. They slowed down after that and Puerto Rico made 23-31 in the last ten minutes. Of course, that was not enough even for a small treat and Canada celebrated valuable 86-65 victory at the end.
Places 5-6
Chile - Brazil 54-62
Brazil was better than Chile 62-54 winning the fifth place in Cancun. Brazil ended the U16 FIBA Americas championship with two wins. Chile is No.6 at this event. Lucas Dias (96) shined in Brazil with double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds. Luis Ricci (95) scored 10, while Humberto Gomes (96) and Lucas Garcia (95) netted 9 points each. In defeat, Martin Pino (95) collected 14 points and 7 rebounds. Matias Sepulveda (96) and Ricardo Cardenas (95) had 13 and 11 points respectively.
Brazil dominated in the second and last quarter, what was enough for the victory at the end. Chile started with 12-9 and Brazil made 7-15 in the second period. Chile was better in Q3 again (21-18) and everything was still open. However, Lucas Dias and his teammates shined when it mattered most and finished last period with 14-20 for the final 54-62 victory.
Places 7-8
Costa Rica - Mexico 66-76
Mexico avoided last place at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. They outplayed Costa Rica 76-66 for the first victory at this event. Costa Rica on the other side, finished as No.8 winless. Omar De Haro (95) shined for the hosts with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Bryan Rivera (95) followed him with 20 points and 7 boards. Third scorer in victory was Uriel Beltran (96) with 9 points. CRC got 24 points and 12 rebounds from Milton Jimenez (95). Adrian Chavarria (96) scored 13 and Henry Sanchez (95) added three points less.
Mexico started the game with 15-19 lead. However, Costa Rica replied with 19-15 in Q2 tying the score at the HT. Mexico drastically improved after the breather making 16-24 in Q3. They won the last quarter as well (16-18) for the final 66-76 victory.



USA and Argentina to fight for the Gold in Cancun - Jun 25, 2011

SEMIFINALS

Puerto Rico - Argentina
90-96
Argentina advanced to the Big Final of U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. Argentina eliminated Puerto Rico in the very exciting Semifinals 96-90. They will fight for the Gold against powerful USA. On the other side, Puerto Rico will meet Canada in the battle for Bronze. Gabriel Deck (195-F-95) exploded with 33 points and 6 rebounds in this victory. Lucio Reinaudi (95) followed him with 23 pts and he was the last one with double-digits in Argentina. Their third scorer was Rodrigo Haag (95) with 8 pts. In the loosing squad, Miguel Cartagena (186-G-95) shined with 30 points. Eliel Gonzalez (189-G-95) had 20 and Ariel Watson (95) added 2 pts less.
Argentina made impressive 16-27 in the first ten minutes and continued with 12-21 after that. Third period also belonged to Argentina (17-21), who had comfortable lead with 10:00 to go. However, Puerto Rico didnt give up and they managed to treat in the finish, but the difference was too big and Argentina saved plus six until the end.
Saturday is the last day of the championship.

USA - Canada 113-70
USA had no troubles to beat Canada 113-70 and to reach the Big Final of U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. USA will meet Argentina in the battle for Gold. On the other side, Canada will play against Puerto Rico for third place. Today is the last day of the championship.
USA took control on Canada from the very beginning. They made 31-7 lead in the first ten minutes and jumped to plus 35 until the halftime. Question about the winner was already resolved and second half was just the formality (29-16, 21-26).
Aaron Gordon (96) stepped up with 22 points and 8 rebounds for USA. Jahlil Okafor-Benton (96) followed him with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Theophilus Pinson Jr. (96) added 15 pts and 5 rebs. In Canada, Anthony Pate (95) and Malcom Duvivier (95) delivered 10 points each. Miroslav Jaksic (95) collected 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Places 5-8
Chile - Costa Rica 105-48
Chile cruised past Costa Rica to 105-48 victory in Cancun. It was the first game of the Classification Round from 5th to 8th place. It means that Chile will meet Brazil today and the winner will end as No.5. Costa Rica will play against Mexico and will try to avoid the last place in Cancun. Chile dominated in all basketball elements against their rivals. Quarters: 30-10, 20-13, 26-11, 29-14.
Eugenio Luzcando (95) top-scored for the winners with 26 points. He also had 9 rebounds and 5 assists beside that. Hernan Soto (95) had 15 points and 5 boards, while Martin Pino (95) added 14 pts, plus 5 assists. In CRC, Milton Jimenez (95) shined with 27 points. Their second scorer was Henry Sanchez (95) with 9 points (5 rebs).

Brazil - Mexico 71-57
Brazil was too strong for Mexico 71-57 on Friday. It was the first game of the Classification Round from 5th to 8th place at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. Brazil made the first step and they will meet Chile today in the battle for fifth place. Mexico will try to beat Costa Rica and to avoid the last place at this event. Mexico was better than Brazil in the first half (23-28), but they somehow stopped after that. Brazil shined after the breather and with two great periods (20-11, 28-18) won the game with comfortable 71-57.
Fernando Stafleu (95) came up with 24 points and 10 rebounds in victory. Lucas Dias (96) secured a great help adding 16 pts and 8 boards. Higor Simas (95) was third scorer in victory with 7 points (6 rebs). For the hosts, Omar De Haro (95) delivered 21 points. Jose Hermosillo (95) stopped to 7 pts and 9 rebounds.



Day Three: Semifinals are set - Jun 24, 2011
Group A
Mexico - Canada 56-88
Canada registered second win at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. They handed 88-56 loss to Mexico taking the second place in Group A. It means that Canada advanced to Semifinals, where they will meet USA. Mexico ended as the last ranked team in this group (0-3). Patrick Steeves (95) came up with 16 points and 9 rebounds in victory. Kevin-Mbezela Zabo (186-G) also had 16 points, while Tyrell Bellot-Green (96) added 15 points and 8 boards. In the loosing squad, Jose Hermosillo (95) collected 11 points and 7 rebs. Omar De Hato also scored 11 pts.
Canada took control on Mexico from the very beginning. They made 12-25 record and managed to keep plus 12 until the halftime. Canada was better team in the second half as well (14-22, 15-27) winning this game with comfortable 56-88. Semifinals will be played today.

Puerto Rico - Chile 80-55
Puerto Rico finished Preliminary Round in Cancun with perfect 3-0. They cruised past Chile 80-55 winning the first place in Group A. Puerto Rico will meet Argentina in the Semifinals. On the other side, Chile failed to reach the next stage ending as No.3 in this group with 1-2 record. Miguel Cartagena (186-G-95) once again was the leading player in victory. This time he scored 26 points. Bryan Rodriguez (186-G-95) scored 12 and Ariel Watson (95) had 10 pts, plus 6 rebounds. In Chile, Matias Sepulveda (96) collected 16 points and 5 rebs, while Eugenio Luzcando (95) stopped to 12 pts. Puerto Rico was way better team in the first half. They made 2109 in Q1 and continued with 23-10 after that. After 20 minutes of game question about the winner was already resolved and second half was just the formality. Semifinals will be played today.
Group B
Brazil - Argentina 77-85
It was a do-or-die game for both teams. Argentina was better than Brazil 85-77 winning the second place in Group B. Both teams had 1-1 record before this meeting. Argentina ended as No.2 and booked a spot for the Semifinals. Brazil (No.3) will continue in Classification Round. Gabriel Deck (195-F-95) exploded with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Lucio Reinaudi (95) had 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Jonathan Sacco (95) added 11 pts, plus 6 rebs. In Brazil, Fernando Stafleu (95) top-scored with 22 pts. Luis Ricci (95) had 19 pts and 5 assists, while Humberto Gomes (96) added 12 pts.
First half ended with 34-34 tie. Argentina took control on Brazil after that making plus 10 in third period. They Brazil threatened in the last quarter, but Argenrina managed to keep its lead and to book a spot for the Semifinals. Championship continues today.

Costa Rica - USA 46-118
As expected, USA destroyed Costa Rica registering third straight victory in Cancun. USA ended as No.1 of Group B and will meet Canada in the Semifinals. Costa Rico finished as the last ranked team in this group with 0-3 score. They will continue in Classification Round. Conner Frankamp (96) came up with 22 points and 9 assists for the winners. Aaron Gordon (96) also was great and he was very close to reach triple-double: 18 pts, 18 rebs, 9 as. Kendrick Nunn (96) helped with 12 pts. In Costa Rica, Milton Jimenez (95) shined with 28 points. Henry Sanchez (95) netted 11 pts. USA was simply too strong for their rival during the entire game. Quarters: 0-19, 7-40, 25-30, 14-29. The championship continues today.


Day Two in Cancun - Jun 23, 2011
Group A
Canada - Puerto Rico 86-90
Puerto Rico jumped to 2-0 record in Cancun. They handed 90-86 loss to Canada staying on top of Group A. It was the first loss to Canada, who shares the second place with Chile now (1-1). Canada opened the game strongly making 28-18 lead. However, Puerto Rico replied with 13-22 in the second period. Miguel Cartagena (186-G-95) and his teammates continued in the same rhythm after the breather and they were 5-point up with 10:00 to go. In very exciting last quarter, Puerto Rico managed to keep their lead and to celebrate second straight win at the U16 FIBA Americas championship. Miguel Cartagena exploded in this game with 36 points. He made 5 triples and also 15 of 17 attempts from the line. Ariel Watson (95) had 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Eliel Gonzalez (189-G-95) added 14 points, 5 rebs and 8 assists. In Canada, Marial Shayok (95) (6 rebs) and Kevin-Mbezela Zabo (186-G) (5 rebs, 5 as) netted 17 points each. Malcom Duvivier (95) followed them with 15 pts and 6 rebs.
In Day Three, Puerto Rico will meet Chile and it will most probably be the crucial game for the first place in Group A. Canada will play against Mexico.

Chile - Mexico 80-54
Chile registered first win in Cancun. They cruised past Mexico 80-54 for 1-1 record in Group A. On other side, Mexico faced with their second loss at the U16 FIBA Americas championship. Eugenio Luzcando (95) stepped up for the winners with 15 points. Ricardo Cardenas (95) had 14 points and 5 rebs, while Martin Pino (95) added 11 points and 5 assists. For the hosts, Omar De Haro (95) netted 16 points and David Elias (95) stopped to 10. Chile had wonderful beginning as they made 32-12 lead in just ten minutes. It was also the crucial period in this game and Mexico never recovered. Quarters: 32-12, 15-13, 11-17, 22-12.
In the last game of the Preliminary Round, Chile will meet Puerto Rico. Mexico will take on Canada.
Group B
Costa Rica - Brazil 53-92
Both teams failed in Day One of the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. This time, Brazil blasted Costa Rica 92-53 for 1-1 record in Group B. Of course, Costa Rica dropped to 0-2 and lost all chances to reach the Semifinals. Lucas Dias (96) paced the winners with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Guilherme Naleagaca (95) scored 12 points and Adriano Alves (95) added two less. In Costa Rica, Milton Jimenez (95) shined with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Their second scorer was Henry Sanchez (95) wit 8 pts. Brazil dominated and was holding the comfortable lead during the entire game. They started with 11-22 in Q1 and jumped to plus 24 at the HT. CRC made 17-13 after the breather and Brazil closed this meeting with huge 11-30.
Today, Brazil will meet Argentina and the winner will advance to Semifinals. Costa Rica will play against powerful USA.

USA - Argentina 102-81
USA was too strong for Argentina 102-81 in Day Two of the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. It means that USA jumped to 2-0 in Group B and already booked a spot for the Semifinals. They also secured first place in this pool. Argentina dropped to 1-1 and still has a nice chance to reach the Semis. Jabari Parker (95) came up with 21 points and 7 rebounds in victory. Kendrick Nunn (96) followed him with 14 points and 7 boards, while Larry Austin Jr. (96) added 11 pts. In Argentina, Alvaro Merlo (5'7''-G-95) delivered 15 points. Rodrigo Haag (95) had 13 pts and 6 rebs, while Lucio Reinaudi (95) added 12 pts. Second quarter was the crucial one in this game (30-11). Argentina never recovered from it and USA had no troubles to keep the comfortable lead. Quarters: (22-23, 30-11, 22-17, 28-30.
In the last day of the Preliminary Round, USA will meet Costa Rica. Argentina will take on Brazil.


Day One in Cancun - Jun 22, 2011
Group A
Mexico - Puerto Rico 68-78
Puerto Rico made it in Day One of the U16 FIBA Americas championship. They handed 78-68 loss to Mexico, who is the host of this event (Cancun). Both teams are together with Canada and Chile placed to Group A. Puerto Rico did a great job in the first quarter making 9-26 lead. They increased it to 24-44 until he halftime and Mexico was in deep trouble. However, they didn't give up and tried to catch up for rest of the game, but they didn't make it (27-23, 17-11).
Ariel Watson (95) was a key player for the hosts with 21 points and 11 rebounds. He reached valuation 26 and was the MVP of this game. Miguel Cartagena (186-G-95) scored 18 and Eliel Gonzalez (189-G-95) helped with 11 pts, plus 5 rebs. Jaime Villalobos (96) replied with 19 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts. David Elias (95) and Jose Hermosillo (95) (6 rebs) netted 12 and 10 pts respectively.
In Day Two, Puerto Rico will meet Puerto Rico will play against Canada, while Mexico will try to grab the first win against Mexico.

Chile - Canada 51-96
Canada impressed basketball fans with their performance in Day One of the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. Canada smashed Chile 96-51 for 1-0 record in Group A. Participants of the same pool are also Puerto Rico and Mexico. Canada was way better team in this game and they made double-digit lead already in the first quarter (12-23). Canada jumped to plus 23 until the halftime and it was already clear who the winner of the game will be. Third quarter ended with 16-31 and last ten minutes 10-17 for Canada, who celebrated huge victory at the end.
Tyrell Bellot-Green (96) stepped up with 16 points in victory making all of his 4 attempts from behind the arc. Marial Shayok (95) (8 rebs) and Malcom Duvivier (95) added 13 points each. In Chile, Matias Sepulveda (96) delivered 15 points. Eugenio Luzcando (95) netted four less. In Day Two, Canada will meet Puerto Rico. Chile will take on Mexico (host).
Group B
Brazil - USA 70-105
USA demonstrated its power in Day One of the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. They blasted Brazil 105-70 for 1-0 score in Group B. Argentina and Costa Rica are also placed to this pool. Jabari Parker (95) came up with 27 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. He reached valuation 32. Jahlil Okafor-Benton (96) (5 rebs) scored 19 and Stanley Johnson (96) helped with 14 points. In Brazil, Luis Ricci (95) delivered 16 points. Lucas Dias (96) had 13 points and 7 rebounds.
USA opened the game in style making 19-33 lead. They destroyed Brazil in Q2 letting them score just 3 points for ten minutes. USA had 22 on the other side for huge 22-55 at the HT. All after that was just the formality and USA had no troubles to celebrate comfortable win.
In Day Two, USA will play against Argentina. Brazil will meet Costa Rica.

Argentina - Costa Rica 130-28
Argentina had a joyful Day One at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Cancun. They destroyed Costa Rica 130-28 for 1-0 record in Group B. Except of Argentina and Costa Rica, participants of the same pool are also USA and Brazil. Gabriel Deck (195-F-95) exploded with 21 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. He needed just 14 minutes on the court to do this. Alvaro Merlo (170-G-95) had 16 and Lucio Reinaudi (95) added 14 points and 6 boards. In the loosing squad, Adrian Chavarria (96) had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Their second scorer was Milton Jimenez (95) with 9 pts and 7 boards. Argentina took control on Costa Rica from the very beginning. They made huge 39-8 lead in the first quarter and continued with 31-4 for the next ten minutes. At that time it was already clear who the winner of the game will be and second half was just the formality (28-12, 32-4).
In Day Two, Argentina will meet USA, while Costa Rica will play against Brazil.


Day One in Merida - Jun 14, 2011
Group A
Mexico - Puerto Rico 54-67
The host of U16 FIBA Americas championship failed in their first game. Puerto Rico outplayed Mexico 67-54 in Day One for 1-0 record in Group A. Aleana Leon (96) stepped up for the winners with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Claudia Ortiz (96) had 15 points and 6 boards, while Chelsea Robinson (96) added 10 pts and 8 rebs. For the hosts, Meliza Ramirez (95) had 17 points and 9 rebs. Maria Morales (95) collected 15 pts and 13 rebs. Mexico has 0-1 now Group A. The hosts dominated in the first half ending it with nice 39-17 lead. However, they somehow stopped after that and Puerto Rico took control on this meeting. They made 7-24 in third and 8-16 in the last period for the final 54-67 victory. In Day Two, Puerto Rico will meet Canada. Mexico will take on Guatemala.

Guatemala - Canada 17-112
Canada opened FIBA Americas U16 in style. They blasted Guatemala 112-17 for 1-0 record in Group A. Beside Canada and Guatemala, participants of the same pool are also host Mexico and Puerto Rico. Canada took control on Guatemala from the very beginning and they were increasing the lead after each quarter. Quarters: 4-30, 2-34, 8-25, 3-23. Cheyanne Roger (188-C-95) was the best player in victory with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Kia Nurse (180-PG-96) scored 15, while Emma Wolfram (193-C-95) added 13 pts and 7 boards. Guatemala on the other side did not have anyone with double-digits in scoring. They leading players were Monica Ramirez (97) and Melissa Vargas (96) with 5 pts each. In the next round, Canada will meet Puerto Rico. Guatemala will take on Mexico.
Group B
Brazil - USA 54-71
USA had wonderful beginning of the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Merida. Strong USA team blasted Brazil 71-54 for 1-0 record in Group B. Earlier in Day One, Venezuela outsmarted Argentina 38-37 also in Group B. USA made 16-11 in the first quarter, but Brazil responded with 23-15 for the next ten minutes. However, that was all from Brazil in this game as USA blasted them in the second half (21-8, 19-12) for the final 71-54 victory. Mercedes Russell (196-C-95) shined for the winners with double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds. She reached valuation 34 and was MVP of this meeting. Argentina failed in Day One of the FIBA Americas U16 championship. Venezuela grabbed 37-38 thriller win for 1-0 score in Group B. Except of Argentina and Venezuela, participants of the same group are also Brazil and USA. Argentina had wonderful beginning as they made 16-6 lead in the first ten minutes. They continued with 7-2 in Q2 for plus 15 at the halftime, but they somehow stopped after that. Venezuela made 3-10 after the breather and 11-20 in the last ten minutes, what was enough for a turn and 37-38 victory at the end. Yolimar Martinez (95) had 7 points and 11 rebounds for the winners, and Daniela Morillo (95) added 7 pts and 7 rebs. Alexandra Martinez (95) (14 rebs) and Mariangel Mendoza (95) had 6 points each. In defeat, Julieta Belen Ale (96) collected 13 pts and 6 rebs. Victoria Llorente (96) stopped to 7 pts and 5 rebs.
