USA wins the Gold - Jun 19, 2011
FINAL
USA - Brazil 73-40
USA won the Gold at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Merida. They dominated during the entire event and finally blasted Brazil 73-40 for the Gold. The Silver belongs to Brazil of course. It is important to mention that both teams booked a place for the next U17 World Championships. Linnae Harper (5'8''-G-95) stepped up for USA in the Finals with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Jannah Tucker (5'11''-G-95) had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, while Mercedes Russell (6'5''-C-95) helped with double-double of 10 points and 12 boards. In the loosing squad, Izabella Frederico (95) shined with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Their second scorer was Vitoria Domingos (96) with just 6 pts (5 rebs).
USA took control on Brazil from the very beginning. The Americans made 19-8 lead in the first ten minutes and continued with 21-10 in Q2. Nothing has changed after the breather as USA was simply too strong for Brazil. Third quarter ended with 23-9, after what USA slowed down and Brazil made 10-13 in the last ten minutes.
USA won the Group B with perfect 3-0 record and later eliminated Puerto Rico in the Semis.
Places 3-4
Puerto Rico - Canada 36-53
The Bronze belongs to Canada. They outplayed Puerto Rico 53-36 in the battle for third place at the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Merida. Thanks to this win, Canada also booked a spot for the next U17 World Championship. Puerto Rico stays without the medal at this event. Cheyanne Roger (188-C-95) was the only player with double-digits in scoring for Canada. She had 10 points and also grabbed 7 rebounds beside that. Emma Wolfram (193-C-95) (7 rebs) and Hilary Hanaka (175-G-96) helped with 8 points each. In the loosing squad, Claudia Ortiz (96) collected 10 points and 8 boards. Gileysa Quinones (97) stopped to 9 pts. Canada took control on Puerto Rico from the very beginning. They made 9-16 in the first ten minutes, but somehow stopped after that. Puerto Rico replied with 10-6 in the second period, but it was all from them in this game. Canada made 13-15 in third and 4-16 in the last quarter for the final 36-53 victory and Bronze medal in Merida.
Places 5-6
Argentina - Venezuela 82-33
Argentina finished U16 FIBA Americas Championship in Merida as No.5. They destroyed Venezuela last night 82-33 in the game for fifth place. Victoria Llorente (96) was unstoppable in victory with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Andrea Ledesma (97) also was great adding 20 points and 8 rebs. Ledesma was actually the MVP of this meeting with valuation 28. Sofia Aispurua (95) helped with 8 points and 14 rebounds. In the loosing squad, Daniela Wallen (95) collected 13 points and 5 rebounds. Maholy Lovera (96) had 8 pts and 5 rebs. Argentina was way better team during the entire game. They made 23-6 lead in the first ten minutes and later were just extending it in each period. They made 18-5 in Q2 and 28-7 in third frame. Argentina slowed down after that as the last ten minutes were just the formality.
Places 7-8
Mexico - Guatemala 86-23
Mexico avoided last place in Merida. The host of U16 FIBA Americas Championship smashed Guatemala 86-23 taking the seventh place at this event. Guatemala ended it winless. Daniela Soto (96) top-scored for the winners with 15 points. Ingrid Martinez (95) had double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Maria Lopez (96) (7 as) and Virginia Gonzalez (98) (6 rebs) netted 12 points each. Guatemala got 8 points from Elizabeth Gutierrez (97). Monica Ramirez (97) scored 4. Mexico dominated in all basketball elements against Guatemala. The hosts made 20-point lead in the first ten minutes and later were just increasing their plus. Quarters: 27-7, 19-4, 23-4, 17-8.



USA and Brazil to meet in the Finals - Jun 18, 2011

Semifinals

Canada - Brazil 35-56

Brazil advanced to Big Final of the U16 FIBA Americas Championship. They blasted Canada in the Semis 56-35. In the other Semifinals, USA was too strong for Puerto Rico, so USA and Brazil will fight for the Gold today. Izabella Frederico (95) was the leading player in Brazil with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Their second scorer was Vitoria Domingos (96) with 8 points and she also had 6 rebounds beside that. Camila Pereira (95) helped with 6 points and 6 boards. In the loosing squad, Kia Nurse (180-PG-96) delivered 13 points and Emma Wolfram (193-C-95) had 7 pts. Canada will fight for the Bronze against Puerto Rico. Brazil dominated from the beginning and was just extending the lead every minute. Quarters: 8-18, 11-14, 9-11, 7-13. Today is the last day of competition in Merida.

USA - Puerto Rico 99-51
As expected, USA did not have any troubles to reach the Finals of U16 FIBA Americas championship. USA handed 99-51 loss to Puerto Rico in the Semis and will meet Brazil for the Gold. Puerto Rico will play against Canada for the Bronze at this event. USA took control on Puerto Rico from the very beginning. They made 22-12 lead and continued with impressive 35-6 in the second quarter. Question about the winner was already resolved and second half was just the formality (22-21, 20-12). Rebecca Greenwell (183-G-95) shined for the winners with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Jatarie White (191-C-95) had 16 pts and 8 rebs, while Mercedes Russell (196-C-95) added 14 pts and 13 boards. In defeat, Claudia Ortiz (96) delivered 15 pts. Krystal Luciano (96) stopped to 9 pts and 6 rebs. Saturday is the last day of competition in Merida.
Places 5-8
Venezuela - Guatemala 87-20
Venezuela was too strong for Guatemala 87-20 on Friday. It was the first game of the classification round in Merida. In the last day of the competition Venezuela will meet Mexico. The winner will end as No.5 at this event. Guatemala will meet the hosts and will try to avoid the last place. Dakarlin Montoya (95) was the leading scorer in victory with 18 points and she dished out 5 assists beside that. Daniela Wallen (95) had 16 pts in this win and Siuly Marcano (96) added 13 pts. Monica Ramirez (97) netted 6 pts for Guatemala. Elizabeth Lopez (96) had 4. Quarters: 16-7, 21-5, 29-4, 21-4).

Mexico - Argentina 57-62
Argentina outplayed Mexico 62-57 in Day Four of the U16 FIBA Americas championship. It was the first game of the classification round from 5th to 8th place. So, Argentina will meet Venezuela in the last game of the competition. The winner will end as No.5. Mexico will try to avoid the last place at this event and they will have to beat Guatemala. Sofia Chelini (96) top-scored for Argentina in this meeting with 18 points. Victoria Llorente (96) added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Andrea Ledesma (97) had 11 pts, plus 8 boards. For the hosts, Daniela Soto (96) collected 14 points and 6 rebs. Guadalupe Pichardo (95) netted 10 pts. Quarters: 12-26, 17-11, 11-8, 17-17.



Day Three in Merida: Semifinals are set - Jun 16, 2011
Group A
Puerto Rico - Guatemala 62-5
Puerto Rico destroyed Guatemala to win the second place in Group A. They have 2-1 record and will meet USA in the Semifinals. On the other side, Guatemala is the last ranked team in this group with no win (0-3). They will continue in classification games from 5th to 8th place. The first rival of Guatemala will be Venezuela. Claudia Ortiz (96) came up with 17 points and 5 assists in victory. Raiza Rodriguez (96) helped with double-double of 13 points and 10 boards, while Krystal Luciano (96) added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Guatemala of course did not have anyone with double-digits as the whole team scored just 5 points in this game. Melisa Rabanales (96) and Brenda Cruz (97) had 2 pts each. What to say about this game. Puerto Rico was simply too strong and kept Guatemala scoreless in the second and last quarter.

Mexico - Canada 30-79
Canada won the first place in Group A of the U16 FIBA Americas championship. They blasted the hosts Mexico 79-30 to end this stage with perfect 3-0. It means that Canada will meet Brazil in the Semifinals. Mexico on the other side, failed to reach the next phase. They ended as No.3 with 1-2 score and will go to classification round from 5th to 8th place. Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau (186-F-96) shined for the winners with 17 points for 18 minutes on the court. Kia Nurse (180-PG-96) had 15 points and 5 rebs, while Khaleann Caron-Goudreau (186-F-96) added 12 points and 7 rebs. The hosts got 10 points and 7 rebs from Meliza Ramirez (95). She was the only Mexican players with more than 10 pts. The championship continues on Friday.
Group B
Brazil - Argentina 56-45
Brazil registered second win at the U16 FIBA Americas Championship in Merida. They outplayed Argentina 56-45 for 2-1 record, what was enough for the second place in Group B. Brazil will meet Canada in the Semifinals. Argentina was not able to deliver win at this stage (0-3) and they will continue in Classification Round from 5th to 8th place. Izabella Frederico (95) stepped up for the winners with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Kananda Ribeiro (96) added 10 points and she needed just one more rebound for double-double. Carla Silva (96) helped with 9 pts. Magali Pittavino (95) replied with 12 points for Argentina and Sofia Aispurua (95) had 10 pts, plus 5 rebs. Brazil celebrated in this game mostly thanks to great played second half. Quarters: 8-14, 12-10, 16-9, 20-12.

Venezuela - USA 32-114
Ex expected, USA registered another comfortable win in Merida. This time USA destroyed Venezuela 114-32 winning the first place in Group B of the U16 FIBA Americas Championship. It means that they will meet Puerto Rico in the Semifinals. Venezuela finished as No.3 in this group (1-2) and failed to reach the Semis. They will now fight for the fifth place at this event. Stephanie Mavunga (191-F-95) and Rebecca Greenwell (183-G-95) scored 18 points each for the winners. Mavunga pulled down 7 rebounds beside that. Jannah Tucker (180-G-95) helped with 17 pts. In Venezuela, Yolimar Martinez (95) netted 8 pts and had 6 rebounds. Maholy Lovera (96) scored 6 pts. Championship continues on Friday.


Day Two in Merida - Jun 15, 2011
Group A
Guatemala - Mexico 28-111
First win for the hosts of U16 FIBA Americas championship. They outplayed Guatemala with huge 111-28 for 1-1 record in Group A. Mexico faced with loss in Day One against Puerto Rico and they are in bad situation now. They will have to beat Canada in the last round and Puerto Rico to loose against Guatemala, what is hard to happen. Ingrid Martinez (95) shined with 22 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Meliza Ramirez (95) had 18 points and 10 rebs, while Guadalupe Pichardo (95) added 17 pts. In the loosing squad, Maria Osorio (96) and Melissa Vargas (96) scored 5 points each. Of course, Mexico dominated during the entire time. They destroyed Guatemala in all basketball elements. Quarters: 1-22, 7-28, 9-35, 11-26.

Canada - Puerto Rico 80-66
Canada stays undefeated after two days in Merida. This time Canada was better than Puerto Rico 80-66 for 2-0 record in Group A. It is already clear that Canada will win the first place in this pool. With this win, they secured a spot in the Semifinals. On the other side, Puerto Rico faced with the first loss. They have 1-1 now and still a nice chance to reach the next stage. Kia Nurse (180-PG-96) shined for the winners with 23 points. Kolbie Orum (188-F-95) and Hilary Hanaka (175-G-96) followed her with 14 points each. In defeat, Aleana Garcia (96) shined with 26 points and 5 rebounds. Gileysa Quinones (97) stopped to 14 pts. Except of the first period, Canada was much better team in this game. Quarters: 15-18, 24-14, 19-17, 22-17.
Group B
USA - Argentina 82-46
Second straight win for USA at the FIBA U16 Americas championship in Merida. They have 2-0 record now in Group B and already booked a ticket for the Semifinals. Argentina dropped to 0-2 on the other side. They have no chance to reach the next stage. Rebecca Greenwell (6'0''-G-95) was the leading player in victory with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Stephanie Mavunga (6'3''-F-95) also shined adding double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jatarie White (6'3''-C-95) helped with 11 points and 8 rebs. In Argentina, Magali Pittavino (95) delivered 13 points and Yanina Mercancini (95) had one less. USA was way better team than Argentina during the entire game. Quarters: 20-17, 23-6, 20-17, 19-6).

Venezuela - Brazil 47-86
First win for Brazil at the U16 FIBA Americans championship in Media. They failed in Day One against Canada so not Brazil have 1-1 record in Group B. Venezuela also has 1-1 as they celebrated in their first game. Venezuela was better than Argentina. Both teams still have a chance to reach the next stage, but Brazil is in much better satiation now. Izabella Sangali came up with 21 points and 7 assists for the winners. Kananda Ribeiro (96) added double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Vitoria Domingos (96) followed with 12 pts and 10 rebs. In defeat, Daniela Morillo had 16 pts and 5 rebs. Mariangel Mendoza (95) stopped to 9 pts. Brazil was way better team during the entire meeting. Quarters: 20-25, 15-21, 4-24, 8-16).

 
Day One in Merida - Jun 14, 2011
Group A
Mexico - Puerto Rico 54-67
The host of U16 FIBA Americas championship failed in their first game. Puerto Rico outplayed Mexico 67-54 in Day One for 1-0 record in Group A. Aleana Leon (96) stepped up for the winners with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Claudia Ortiz (96) had 15 points and 6 boards, while Chelsea Robinson (96) added 10 pts and 8 rebs. For the hosts, Meliza Ramirez (95) had 17 points and 9 rebs. Maria Morales (95) collected 15 pts and 13 rebs. Mexico has 0-1 now Group A. The hosts dominated in the first half ending it with nice 39-17 lead. However, they somehow stopped after that and Puerto Rico took control on this meeting. They made 7-24 in third and 8-16 in the last period for the final 54-67 victory. In Day Two, Puerto Rico will meet Canada. Mexico will take on Guatemala.

Guatemala - Canada 17-112
Canada opened FIBA Americas U16 in style. They blasted Guatemala 112-17 for 1-0 record in Group A. Beside Canada and Guatemala, participants of the same pool are also host Mexico and Puerto Rico. Canada took control on Guatemala from the very beginning and they were increasing the lead after each quarter. Quarters: 4-30, 2-34, 8-25, 3-23. Cheyanne Roger (188-C-95) was the best player in victory with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Kia Nurse (180-PG-96) scored 15, while Emma Wolfram (193-C-95) added 13 pts and 7 boards. Guatemala on the other side did not have anyone with double-digits in scoring. They leading players were Monica Ramirez (97) and Melissa Vargas (96) with 5 pts each. In the next round, Canada will meet Puerto Rico. Guatemala will take on Mexico.
Group B
Brazil - USA 54-71
USA had wonderful beginning of the U16 FIBA Americas championship in Merida. Strong USA team blasted Brazil 71-54 for 1-0 record in Group B. Earlier in Day One, Venezuela outsmarted Argentina 38-37 also in Group B. USA made 16-11 in the first quarter, but Brazil responded with 23-15 for the next ten minutes. However, that was all from Brazil in this game as USA blasted them in the second half (21-8, 19-12) for the final 71-54 victory. Mercedes Russell (196-C-95) shined for the winners with double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds. She reached valuation 34 and was MVP of this meeting. Rebecca Greenwell (183-G-95) (6 rebs) and Stephanie Mavunga (191-F-95) netted 8 pts each. In Brazil, Izabella Sangalli (95) delivered 14 points and Raphaella Da Silva (95) added 10 pts, plus 5 rebs. In Day Two, USA will meet Argentina. Brazi will take on Venezuela.

Argentina - Venezuela 37-38
Argentina failed in Day One of the FIBA Americas U16 championship. Venezuela grabbed 37-38 thriller win for 1-0 score in Group B. Except of Argentina and Venezuela, participants of the same group are also Brazil and USA. Argentina had wonderful beginning as they made 16-6 lead in the first ten minutes. They continued with 7-2 in Q2 for plus 15 at the halftime, but they somehow stopped after that. Venezuela made 3-10 after the breather and 11-20 in the last ten minutes, what was enough for a turn and 37-38 victory at the end. Yolimar Martinez (95) had 7 points and 11 rebounds for the winners, and Daniela Morillo (95) added 7 pts and 7 rebs. Alexandra Martinez (95) (14 rebs) and Mariangel Mendoza (95) had 6 points each. In defeat, Julieta Belen Ale (96) collected 13 pts and 6 rebs. Victoria Llorente (96) stopped to 7 pts and 5 rebs.
In Day Two, Venezuela will meet Brazil, while Argentina will play against USA. /font>
