FIBA Americas U16 Championship starts today in Mendoza - Jun 17, 2009

The 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Men starts today in Mendoza, Argentina with eight of the best national teams in the category. The best three teams qualify for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship for Men.

The event will be played at Vicente Polimeni coliseum in Las Heras, Mendoza and the participants are Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela.

Group A has Brazil, Puerto Rico, USA and Venezuela.
Group B features Argentina, Bahamas, Canada and Mexico.

The two best teams per group enter the semifinal and the winners qualify for the World Championship. The winner of the Bronze Medal game is the last team to enter the FIBA U17 World Championship for Men.

Live stats will be available on www.fibaamericas.com starting at 2:00 p.m. local time with the game between Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Wednesday, June 17:

18:00 Canada vs. Mexico
20:30 Argentina vs. Bahamas

FINAL USA - Canada 111-60 USA celebrated Gold in Formosa. They beat Canada in the championship game. Vernon Carey (204-C-01) banked in 19 points to pace the winners. USA dominated from start to finish. They grabbed a comfortable 49:24 halftime lead. USA unleashed 62 points in the second half to cruise to the victory. SEMIFINALS USA - Argentina 121-49 USA breezed past Argentina en route to the championship game. Scott Barnes (200-SG-01) produced 20 points and 6 steals to pace the North American side.
