Patriots romped past Glands Trucking Service Bulls 65-54 while Victory Valley Royals put away New Ballers 77-56 when the Linden Amateur basketball Associations Senior Club basketball championship continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court Saturdaynight. The Patriots barely made it before time had expired for them to field a team, and they surprised the Bulls with their display from the opening whistle. The Patriots were up 18-11 after the first quarter and led by Neil Marks were able to maintain that grip 35-27 at half time. The Patriots had a big third quarter and outscored the Bulls 19-4 to hold a 55-31 lead after three quarters which laid the platform for their eventual winning score 65-54, Marks was their leader with 23 points as Julius Carter supported with 19 and Trevor added 15. The Bulls best players were Mark Rose with a game high 28 points while Ruel McKinnon had 17. The second match of the evening brought together Roaysl and Ballers and from the opening stanza the Royals took a 15-7 lead and while the Ballers pulled things around using a bare five and outscoring the Royals by ten points 28-18, for a 35-33 score at half time, the Royals were never to be denied this win. The Royals stepped up their game and in the next period of play they produced a brilliant performance by outplaying the Ballers 23-14 and 21-7 in the third and fourth quarters to secure a comfortable 77-56 win. Dwayne Roberts was their main pivot with a 24 point game as Orlando Glasgow with 16 and Anson Durant 15 steadied their charge. | LABA'S SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP | |
|
| | | KINGS PULL OUT, PISTONS BEAT RAIDERS 71-51.IN OPENER. Play in the Linden Amateur Basketball Associations Senior Inter Club championship to determine the club champions saw the national champions Wismar Pistons winning their opening match against Alleyenes Retrieve Raiders by twenty points, 71-51, but there was a no-show of pone of the favourites the Kashif and Shanghai Kings. The tournament ahs attracted the eight first division clubs in Linden namely the Pistons, Kings, Raiders, Patriots, New Ballers, Victory Valley Royals, Amelias Ward Jets and Glands Trucking Service Bulls. The Kashif and Shanghai Kings who were to play new balers in the first game of the tournament, have withdrawn from the tournament saying they were not satisfied with the arrangements surrounding the prizes on offer in the championship and that the life of the tournament may expire before the competition ends. In the lone game Sundaynight the Pistons accelerated in the final strait to stave off the Raiders who were in with a chance midway into the fourth period when at one stage a point separated the teams. The Raiders were down at half time 30-36 and trailed by three, 45-48 at the end of the third quarter but could not keep up with the pace of the Pistons towards the end of the game to lose by 20 points. The Pistons were led to their win through guards Nevin Grenville and Wendell Warrick each with 13 points and forward Stryon Obermuller with 12, while the raiders best shoots were forward Louis James with a game high 15 points, guards Dauwin Llovell and Mark Peters had 13 and nine points respectively.. The tournament is to continue on Friday at the same venue. The LABA was expected to meet for its monthly statutory Meeting last night at the MSC Lounge where among the matters in the agenda would have been the pulling out of the tournament by the Kings. Commenting on the decision not to contest the tournament which basically will be used to determine the senior champions in linden and the classification of teams an official for the association said the Kings sent a letter on Saturday last, outlining their concerns following a club briefing last Wednesday. The association reportedly replied on Sunday morning addressing those concerns raised by the Kings. The official said that the Kings, however, indicated their position not to play in the tournament still stands and as such failed to turn up for the game Sundaynight. |

 | LABA SECRETAY REPLIES TO BANKS DIH LIMITED DENIAL OF COMMITTING TO SPONSOR BASKETBALL | |
|
| | | LABA SECRETARY REPLIES TO BANKS DIH DENIAL OF PROMISIE TO SPONSOR LINDEN BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT After due consideration and in light of denial by the beverage giants Banks DIH Limited that it never committed itself to sponsor the LABAS 2008 First Division basketball championship, I feel compelled as Secretary to respond.. It is a pity that the Communications Manager of Banks DIH Mr. Troy Peters has come forward to state Banks DIH Limited wishes to state that there was no commitment, verbal or written to sponsor the LABA tournament, as his colleagues should have advised him on this matter. This of course was in reference to president of LABA Uborn Smith, that Banks DIH Limited had withdrawn from a commitment made previously. I wish to recall that in November last year we made a request and furnished your company with a budget for this proposed championship, as our intention then was to have this tournament played in the first quarter of 2008. However, just before the 2008 Linden Town Week, at Aprils month end, we realised that we had not heard from Banks DIH. Incidentally, we saw Mr. Carlton Jao and Mr. Mortimer Stewart in Linden and enquired of Mr. Jao about the state of our request. Mr. Jao then asked for a copy of the correspondence and we promptly secured one, and met in the office of the Linden Branch Manager Ms Shaundell Easton. At this meeting in the Linden Office were the Linden Manager Ms Easton, Mr Stewart, Mr. Jao, Mr. Uborn Smith, Second Vice President Bryan Lewis and myself. There, Mr. Carlton Jao went through the budget with us and said he had no problem with the request but asked that there be additionally, a provision for advertising costs inclusive for television and banners. Mr. Jao then declared that this will be known as the Sprite First Division Basketball championship. We interpret that as a commitment. Subsequently, as was requested, the LABA sent a revised budget under the caption of the Sprite /LABA basketball championship. After that meeting we made several checks at the Linden Office and were told that there was no word yet on this Sprite/ LABA championship. Then we were told that Banks DIH will meet with us after Carifesta. On checking after Carifesta, the Linden Office informed us that there were some other internal matters being addressed, so we could not be entertained. To this date we are unsure of what really is the position with this budget which we feel was committed to by Banks DIH. We are still awaiting word on the real position, as in all that we have written and spoken to as a follow-up Banks DIH Limited has not seen it fit to reply officially to our request. At this juncture one would want to know if the release by Mr. Peters is a final decision taken by Banks DIH Limited. Or that the LABA should await an official position from the beverage giants. Why are being treated like this? As we refer to this Guyanese company proudly as is we own.
Joseph Chapman, Secretary, LABA |

 | 6TH SUPLIGEN ALL STAR WEEKEND | |
|
| | | LINDEN SWEEP 6TH SUPLIGEN ALL STAR WEEKEND seniors stop Georgetown 58-30, Ravens' Hamid cops second Mr Dunk title, King's Rose captures 3-point crown..
Georgetown:-LINDEN Seniors showed their win last year was no fluke when they crushed their Georgetown opponents 58-30, to add to the their Juniors victory over the City opponents the night before; as the 6th edition of the Beepat Scorpions Supligen All Star Weekend, organised by Wild Fire Productions concluded Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. At the same time Trinidad and Tobagos guest player with the Linden Seniors Stephen Lighter Lewis was named the Most Valuable Player in a tussle with another player from the winning team Dwayne Roberts. The match result was never in doubt as Linden executed to near perfection throughout the encounter against a flat running Georgetown unit. Earlier in the evening, Ravens teenaged dunker Tyrone Hamid added another slam dunk crown, having won the senior title Saturday night, by out-classing his opponents to win the Junior Mr Dunk contest. The historic performance by Hamid saw the judges get up without scoring his final dunk, which was awesome and without question, too spectacular to really ask for scores, as a perfect 10 was written all over the wind-jamming, flawless execution. And befiore Hamid won his second Mr Dunk title, another teenager Kashif and Shanghai King's Orin Rose (Jr.) easily destroyed hois oppponents to regain the Junior Mr 3-Point shoot-out title. In the process Hamid became the first player to capture both the Junior and Senior Mr Dunk titles in the same year. Linden dominated their clash with arch rivals Georgetown, taking an early 11-4 lead after a 7-0 run in the first quarter. In the second quarter it was Linden by ten, 14-4, and a Ryan Stephney dunk saw the City team to trail 7-14, but the mining town lads were able to open up for a 29-10 advantage by halftime. Stephan Gillis, fresh from his third successive 3-point title the previous night, knocked down one as the third quarter began and two subsequent free throws, sunk by the energetic Royston Siland, brought some hope and apparent relief, for the home side. But that was all as Lighter Lewis, was stamping his authority on the game and Linden to a 35-15 lead with 5:00 mins remaining, before the ganglmg Miguel Williams woke his Georgetown supporters up with a fine dunk. However, Linden were coasting 44-26 when the third period concluded. Lighter Lewis was by now pouring in heavy artillery, netting back-to-back shots from behind the arc for a 51-36 score, and when Anson Durant drove the baseline it was a 55-35 score for the bauxite mining town side before the game ended 58-30. Lewis had a game-high 19 points with three blocked shots, two assists and two rebounds in an all-round performance which earned him the MVP award, ahead of teammate Dwayne Brown Sugar Roberts, who was sweet in getting 10 points and eight rebounds for the winners. Gillis was the best shoot for a disappointing performance by Georgetown with eight points to his name while the next best score was six by Siland. |

 | 6TH SUPLIGEN ALL STAR WEEKEND | |
|
| | | LINDEN SCORE DRAMATIC 79-77 WIN OVER GEORGETOWN IN JUNIOR ENCOUNTER .. GILLIS RETAINS 3-POINT CROWN, HAMID TAKES DUNKING TITLE
FORWARD Mark Rose hit his only field goal, a last-gasp shot from the right bank, which hit nothing but the net and ensured the Linden Junior sides deserved victory in stunning fashion against their Georgetown opponents, when the Beepat Scorpions 6th annual Supligen All Star Weekend, promoted by Wildfire Productions, began Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The win thus set the tone for last nights senior encounter, with Georgetown looking to balance the honours after they had sneaked back into contention after surprisingly being outplayed throughout the match. The Linden side produced disciplined basketball against a seemingly more composed City team from the first jump ball. Prior to this game the 3-point crown defender Stephan Gillis, showing his prowess in the shootout where he was always a cut above his rivals, rightly defended his crown in rich fashion. The new Slam Dunk champion was young Tyrone Hamid of Ravens who entertained the crowd with his daring dunks and gained the approval over his Trinidad and Tobago opponent Stephen Lighter Lewis. The eagerly awaited clash between the youngsters began with Linden opening an 8-0 lead within the first four minutes of the game and 12-2 before Georgetown responded. Jermaine Slater stamped his presence with a left-handed jam before Travis Burnett and Kerwin Evans combined for a fightback but Linden were leading 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. The City boys bounced their way back to level the scores for the first time at 30 with 6:01 left in the second quarter off a Hamid basket but back-to-back three points by Chris Williams - one on a three-point play and from down town - saw Linden open a 35-30 gap and Williams, with another from beyond the arc, put his team up 40-30 before the second half closed out with Linden leading 47-34 when Orin Rose (Jr) knocked down one from 3-point territory. Linden, led by their big guard Akeem Kanhai, continued their dominance and centre Omar Sam sparked their game with a dunk of his own to put his team in the lead, 52-41, and later up 65-50 and 70-60. But somehow the Georgetown side were able to re-organise their game and clawed their way back to trail 73-74 on a Burnett free throw. The City guys then took the lead of freebies from Evans who tied the scores at 74 and then led 75-74 with 1:29 to go. John Fraser nailed two line shots as Georgetown got the momentum for a 77-74 advantage with 15.8 seconds left. Linden pressed and Mark Rose was fouled in the paint where he got his first points in the game, making one of two line shots, as Linden were adrift 75-77. Then the unbelievable happened as Linden stole the ball and swung it out to an unmarked Mark Rose on the right perimeter. The forward Rose floated the shot which swished into the net and Linden had dramatically regained the lead 78-77. Then the experienced Burnett was called for a ball-returned violation by Sherwin Henry which virtually sealed the game for the bauxite mining lads. Throughout the match Akeem Kanhais performance stood out and he was named the Most Valuable Player for his all-round brilliance. Travis Leitch had the top score for Linden with 17 points, Chris Williams 15, Kanhai 11. For Georgetown John Fraser had a game-high 20 points, Hamid 15 and Travis Burnett 13. |

 | LABA/ELITE SUMER FEST 2008 FINAL | |
|
| | | LABA /ELITE BASKETBALL FINAL SUFFERS ANOTHER POSTPONEMENT.... Having had a few postponements to its LABA/ Elite Summer Fest 2008 First Division basketball eight team knock-out championship, the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) is now contemplating when the championship and third place playoff game of the tournament will be staged. Last Saturdays tournament finale did not come off since two clubs were requested to send representatives to the funeral of Kevin Worrel, a Courts Pacesetters basketball player who died while representing his club in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Associations (GABA) season opener at Burnham Court in the capital City two Sundays ago. Top Linden club Kashif and Shanghai Kings, who were to play national club champions Wismar Pistons in the final, and Victory Valley Royals who were up against Amelias Ward Jets in the third place playoff match sought to have the matches postponed in respect of the fallen colleague. The LABA it seemed were at odds with the requests and while apparently deliberating its final position on those requests, failed to pull the advertisement off the television or even signal the postponement of the games, which were set for the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court. As such it caused some embarrassment for LABA as fans turned up to see the matches last Saturdaynight, not knowing the games were not being played. In fact, an official of the Association said it was an oversight not stopping the advertisement from showing on the night of the scheduled final saying the LABA took full responsibilityfor the lapse.
It is now unknown when this long awaited final will take place, in light of the fact that the Beepat Scorpions All Star Weekend will be held in two weeks time and LABA had also planned its own All Star promotion, set for this weekend in Linden. |

 | TREVOR ROSE NEW GABA PRESIDENT | |
|
| | | NEW GABA BOSS WANTS TO SEE RETURN OF COMPETITITVE NEWLY elected president of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Trevor Rose, has noted that the administration of the game in the City will be a serious challenge, following the immediate past performance of the outgoing executive. In an interview with Eurobasket News, Rose admitted of course its a challenge ahead, with the past executive committee and the work they have done and the progress they had made in terms of developing the sport. It is a challenge for me but right away, off hand, I can safely tell you that you have to look at more corporate sponsorship, more tournaments, so that players could be showcased. Rose remarked that his focus is not to look only at basketball internally but put systems in place so that players could be recognised for scholarships and stuff like that. In rating how he will prioritise the challenges at hand, Rose offered Well, the areas that need my greater input in terms of a basketball is first of all our facilities. We have to bring our facilities up to scratch because from playing indoor basketball at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, I would like to think that the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall should remain as the venue that everyone would compete to actually go and play in. Because of this, Rose continued, we would be focusing more on our outdoor venues, and developing those venues to bring back outdoor basketball to Georgetown. This he said is to get not only the interest of the public, but players who have given up on the sport in terms of promotion and competition. In light of this he felt it would be a pleasure to elevate ones team or club to play for a position where you would have to get the chance to go and play in the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. He quipped, I think that is what is lacking in Georgetown right now, outdoor basketball. And as a true designer Rose claimed, Right now, I am in a position to work along with all the associations and the federation to make basketball better or redesign how basketball is played. He acknowledged that there was a document signed by the Georgetown and Linden Associations which was sent for attention by the governing federation but Rose could offer no comment. He said the transition from the past to his current executive is yet to take place and that past president Chris Bowman is to hand over the relevant documents such as the constitution and the guidelines and groundwork that was done by the past executive. He said arrangements are in place for a meeting this week with Bowman. He was looking forward to a very smooth transition. Whatever change is necessary that we would have to make, I am sure that we would make it very fast so as to move forward, he said. However, looking at how to proceed with the questions which were left hanging in the balance due to the strained relationship his predecessor Chris Bowman had with the current Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Rose added, I am willing to sit down and have a meeting with the president of the federation (Colonel (Ret.) Godwin McPherson), and I am sure that we could come to a decision that would be in the best interest of basketball and not an individual, federation or any ones point of view, but for the sport itself, in developing basketball in Guyana. He admitted also that one of the biggest challenges he saw as an outsider is acquiring sponsorship for the sport because of the past relationship with the corporate companies in Guyana and related there is some degree of cleaning up to do. But Rose reassured his commitment from his professional background saying, I am a designer also, and my administrative background is very strong. So there is no need to worry; who dont know Trevor Rose would shortly hear about Trevor Rose in the administrative field of basketball. |

 | GABA BIENNIAL ELECTIONS HELD | |
|
| | | Sweeping changes to basketball in Georgetown ROSE TAKES OVER AS PRESIDENT, CADOIGAN IS SECRETARY THE fact is that there has been a complete shake-up in the administration of basketball in Georgetown. Trevor Rose, CEO of Facts and Roses Company and a member of the Courts Pacesetters basketball club has taken over as the new president of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), following elections yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The majority of city clubs turned up namely Courts Pacesetter, Bounty Colts, Nets, Eagles, Demerara Panthers, Macabees, Pepsi Sonics, Legends and Beepat Scorpions. The sweeping changes in the administrative structure of the game in the City means Rose takes over the biennial term as president from Chris Bowman who served two terms in that capacity. It also brings to an end at least, the several run-ins Bowman had with the governing Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, led by the president, Col. Godwin McPherson (retd). Rose is not totally new to the administration of basketball having served in the positions of secretary and treasurer of Bounty Colts previously. This complete shakeup now mirrors Rose as president, attorney-at-law James Bond as First vice-president, Second vice-president is Kelvin Simon of Bounty Colts, secretary Bobby Cadogan of Pacesetters, treasurer Joel Loncke of Pepsi Sonics and assistant secretary/treasurer is Vijay Panday of Beepats Scorpions. Cadogan, in an invited comment, said the new body is prepared to deal with what is best for basketball in Georgetown. |
