Local basketball pundits would want to compare the Victory Valley Royals School Basketball Championships as Lindens equivalent to the NCAAs March Madness Colligate Championships given the hype, the fanfare and most of all the competiveness that surrounds the tournament.
Played among the secondary schools in Linden, the tournament now enters its eighth consecutive year, starting in 2005, and given the fact every year the organisors add something different to competition, it signals their intentions to solidify the Championship is here to stay.
Much of the success of this event has to do with the hard work done by the Victory Valley Royals (VVR) founder member Linden Sancho Alphonso as the former National Player and coach has been able to engage his friends in the corporate world and mostly overseas based Lindeners to give back to the community through the tournament.
Since its inception, several of Guyanas top junior players were brought to the fore with Akeem The Dream Kanhai and Orin Six Head Rose being among them.
The tournament is also used as a medium in which schools now have a chance to compete at the National School Championships in which Linden Technical Institute has been the most successful.
This years tournament is also poised to be epic and begins today with a double header; Linden Foundation Secondary versus Wesburg Secondary and Christianburg Wismar Secondary School (Multi) taking on the Linden Technical Institute.
Meanwhile, the tournament was officially launched on Wednesday last in the most dramatic fashion which saw Marion Academy getting the better of Mackenzie High School (MHS) 49 43 in an exciting encounter that kept spectators standing for the during of the entire game.
Marion featuring junior National captain and point guard Dominic Vinciente at their helm while MHS had their star player and Junior National high jump record holder Parish Cadogan controlling the back court.
The final score of the game doesnt truly reflect how tight it was from jump ball as Marion Academy led by Vinciente and Taquan Vieira sprung to an early 6 0 lead, not until Cadogan and Isaiah Alphonso got into gear.
While Cadogan punched the lane and scored easy by leaping easily over the Marion defenders, Alphonsos jumpers were on point as MHS went on a 10 0 run.
But the visitors clawed their way back into the game that saw several lead changes until the junior National captain showed his worth by single handedly taking on MHSs defense; easily getting to the basket using his lethal cross-over dribble.
Alphonso and Cadogan are MHSs primary scorers but their teammates apparently didnt get the memo as they wildly shot the ball away and dribbled into a steady double team trap set by Marion Academy.
Cadogan led all scorers with a game high 18 points while Alphonso had 14 for MHS. Vinciente, Vieira and Selvaughn Moseley each scored 12 points for Marian Academy.
The playing dates for this years tournament are April 2, 4, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, with Semi-finals set for April 23rd and finals April 26. All matches will be played at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.

About Youth Basketball Guyana
Our mission is two-fold: The first part involves building an expansive structure for youth basketball by establishing better links between grass-root and youth/school involvement, right up to senior level competition. The second very important connection is related to providing greater opportunities for our youngsters by promoting the value of education through the formation of well rounded student athletes.
The necessity of structure to youth basketball is at the forefront of this initiative but with such growing concerns over illiteracy, HIV/ Aids and other dangerous trends facing our youths, Youth Basketball Guyanawill place equal emphasis on education and personal leadership.
Our hope therefore is that we can play a role in shaping the game for the next generation by working with stakeholder groups, be it the NSC, Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture, Ministry of Education, partners like the Haynes Foundation or the various Associations. We would not be able to do everything, but we can do something. The question then is what is the best that we can do that will create an environment for youth basketball to strive and to lay the foundation for the game to grow in Guyana.

The tournament which is at its semi-final stage went dormant when the Linden protests began earlier in the year. After the uprising which stalled the Linden teams from coming to Georgetown to play in the semifinal, the organisers faced venue problems to conclude the tournament. However, co-tournament organiser Bobby Cadogan issued that the tournament is at a stage where it needs to be concluded. The NCBL is at a stage where it needs to be completed and we are looking to complete it in January, Cadogan told Guyana Times Sport. Cadogan also pointed out that while the tournament is facing challenges, they are looking to complete it and come bigger in 2013.
