 | Giants pummel ASBA...again! | |
|
| | |
Giants took a very good option Friday night before the 'Voila National Basket-ball Championship' All-Star break when they managed to register their sixth victory in the regular season over the team which had dismantled Exposant Basket-ball Team last week ( the 6th ), ASBA. ASBA couldnt find a way to stop the Giants who are more and more hungry for victory in this Haitian National Championship. Yet ASBA dominated the first quarter scoring the first basket of the game at 9:49 remaining by point guard Berwick Corriolan, Giants responded with a 2-point shot by Pascal Jeune. The first explosive basket in the game came at 8:03 to go when Christopher Philemon smashed the ball into the hoop. Pascal Jeune showed that he still is a sweet 3-point shooter when he wiped-out Jose Dacius and catapult the ball from down town to help Giants take the lead 13-12. Robenson Estelhomme dunk the ball at the buzzer and ASBA won the first quarter 20-16. The second quarter was also under the control of ASBA which scored 20 points ( as in the first ) to secure a 40-35 half-time lead.
But the third period was completely different from the first two. Haitians would say: 'Van an vire' in creole. Which means: 'The wind has changed direction'. And the leader was Kendy Jean-Francois. He scored 11 points in 4 minutes including two 3-pointers to help Giants take over the game 52-49 at 4:41 remaining in the period. Giants defense paid off and held ASBA to just 14 points in that third quarter at the end of wich the score was 66-54. Advantage Giants. Giants led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter wich starred Alonzo Dervil who wanted to help ASBA escape form its pitiful third quarter performances, but kind of too late. He hit four 3-pointers including the last basket of the game at the buzzer. The one that prevented Giants to win the by double-digits. ASBA lost another game to Giants, its eternal rival.
Five Giants players posted double digits scoring. Kendy Jean-Francois poured in 24 points on 7-of-18 shooting including 3-of-8 on 3-point field goals but dished out only 1 assist while Pascal Jeune finished with 17 points hitting only one of his 5 shots from-behind-the-arc. Center Bruce-Lee Paul also was good as he collected 13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Giants second wall Christopher Philemon had another tremendous performance scoring 11 points to go along with 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. Guard Evans Gedeon contributed with 12 points on 4-of-5 field goals ( 2-of-3 on 3-point shooting ) and 2-of-2 free-throws.
Alonzo Dervil was the best player on the loosing side. He scored 28 points shooting 50 percent from the field including a 5-of-9 3-pointer but received less help from his teammates. Only two other ASBA players had 10-plus points : Robenson Estelhomme and Robenson Rejouis scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
There will be no game this week because next week-end is the...ALL STAR WEEK-END.

 | Topaz stays alive | |
|
| | |
Topaz Club improved its record to 3-2 in the National Championship with a 103-80 win over Bota's House at the Carrefour Sports Center Saturday.
The Topaz' coach Emmanuel Adhemar used nine players. And this time his players showed that they could win by 20-plus and stay in the race for the playoffs, thanks to tough defense and a pretty good performance from their leading scorer Alexis Brunel.
Brunel found his shooting touch, leading all scorers with 37 points on 16-of-26 shooting, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Samuel Danache contributed with 26 points on 10-of-16 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. And Nielsen Guillaume tallied 16 point on 7-of-13 shooting and pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.
Josnel Joseph led Bota's House with 25 points hitting 10 of his 22 attempts and 4-of-6 free-throw to go along with 7 rebounds. Randy Israel helped with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals but those digits were not enough to help Bota's House run out of a 3-game losing streak.
Topaz as a team hit 42-of-60 field goals but struggled behind the arc with an awful 2-of-10, and was outrebounded by Bota's House 38-37.
Next week Topaz will play Bazooka, the team wich beat ASBA 84-77 friday, at the Carrefour Sports Center, where both teams host their games. And Bota's House will go to Cayes where Dynamic will be awaiting. Dynamic has a 0-5 record. |

 | Dalembert, Team Canada go separate ways | |
|
|
| | | By MICHAEL GRANGE theglobeandmail.com
If you like drama, then Canada's heart-stopping, lurching, improbably comeback win over South Korea Wednesday morning was for you.
There was conflict, tension and a major plot twist - and that was before the Canadian national team even left their hotel.
According to multiple sources, the decision to have Philadelphia 76ers centre Samuel Dalembert leave the team came just hours before Canada's do-or-die win against South Korea.
National team coach Leo Rautins confronted Dalembert as the team bus was about to leave for the arena, questioning his commitment to the team. Dalembert in turn challenged Rautins.
One source said it was Rautins who told Dalembert to 'get lost,' while another said it wasn't clear who had the final word, only that there was mutual agreement the team and it's high-profile centre should part ways.
Attempts to reach Dalembert yesterday were unsuccessful, but his agent, Marc Cornstein, disputed the notion his client's commitment to the national team program was ever in doubt.
'I did talk to him briefly,' Cornstein said from Las Vegas. 'The only thing I can say is questioning any type of commitment on Sam's part is ludicrous. It's been extremely difficult to get high level NBA players to become part of the national team program and Sam not only made the effort last year to get his Canadian citizenship, he committed his off-season last year to helping Canada qualify for Greece.
'And this summer, unless I'm mistaken, he was there at the beginning of training camp and hasn't asked for any special treatment, so I don't know why anyone would question his commitment.'
National team veteran Rowan Barrett said the team is unified going forward. 'The bottom line is you're representing Canada here,' Barrett said. 'The coaches, Leo, the last guy on the team, the doctors - we are all united here. We aren't waiting for Steve Nash or Sam Dalembert. We have to do it with the guys who are here.'
The move came only a day after Dalembert struggled badly in Canada's opening game against Slovenia in which he was 1-of-9 from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
In interviews after the game, Rautins called for Dalembert to give a greater effort offensively and defensively, but added he wasn't singling him out for the loss.
Yesterday, Rautins said the decision to part ways with Dalembert had been 'brewing for a while.'
According to sources, some of the tension began last summer in Las Vegas when Dalembert - though initially enthusiastic about being part of the national team program for the first time, even going so far as to treat his teammates to a few nights out - increasingly isolated himself from the team, was regularly late for meetings and was quick to opt out of practice.
This year, the frustrations started when Dalembert, despite advance warning of the national team's schedule, volunteered for the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program even though it conflicted with the summer season. Dalembert eventually withdrew from the program and arrived on time for the team's three-week training camp. Again, he took his teammates out for a night in Toronto, but once more seemed to lose enthus |

 | Giants overpower Topaz in one of the greatest Haitian basket rivalries | |
|
| | |
In one of the greatest Haitian basket-ball rivalries, the two-time LSB champions Giants got the best of Topaz 69-53. It was an other slow start for the Giants who scored their first point from the free-throw line with 5:15 to go in the first quarter when Pascal Jeune hit one of his two free-throws after he has gotten fouled by Guerino Joseph. As usual Topaz started well scoring the first three basket of the game. Samuel Danache showed the way with a sweet jump-shot when the clock showed 8:23, followed by two bullets from Alexis Brunel. Giants took control of the game in the last second of the second period ( 29-28 ). Topaz was leading the game at the end of the third quarter ( 45-42 ), but couldn't handle the Giants led by their point guard Kendy Jean-Francois.
But, Topaz had several chances to steal the game in the fourth period, but could find any solution to a problem named Kendy Jean-Francois who was shooting well, dishing great assits and having an open eye on Michael Tilus the Topaz play maker. And Brunel Alexis couldn't really find his way to the basket like he is used to.
Kendy Jean-Francois had a game high 19 points, lifting the Giants to a logical victory over Topaz, 69-53. Pascal Jeune added 17 points, shooting 6-on-14 from the field including a pitiful 0/7 from beyond the arc, and 4 steals, and Brisly Paul had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Giants. Brunel Alexis lead the losers with 16 points hitting 8 of his 19 field goals attempted but struggled from the 3-point line ( 0/6 ), and Jimmy Marcelin helped with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Topaz outrebounded Giants 32 to 22 but hit only 1-on-17 3-point field-goals and made 29 turnovers. The next game will be tough for Topaz because they will host one of the best team of the country, ASBA. And Giants will travel to Cap-Haitien where The Bota's House will be waiting for them. |
