Missouri St.) both missed shots in the final seconds as Puerto Rico escaped
with an 87-86 win. Puerto Rico had led by 16 points in the third quarter,
but a 15-1 run early in the fourth gave the Virgin Islands an 81-79 lead.
Eddie Casiano (188-G-72) and Jose Ortiz (210-C-63, college: Oregon St.) each
scored 4 points as PR pulled ahead 87-83, and free throws by Kitwana Rhymer
(208-C-78, college: Massachusetts) and Kevin Sheppard (182-G-79) could only
pull the USVI within 1. Raja Bell (196-F/G-76, agent: Rudoy Herb, college:
Florida Intern.) finally showed off his NBA pedigree with 26 points, mostly
in the first half. Kitwana Rhymer (208-C-78, college: Massachusetts) also
had his strongest game of the tournament. Puerto Rico will play the
Dominican Republic in the final.

to post strong scoring and rebounding numbers, and Raja Bell (196-F/G-76,
agent: Rudoy Herb, college: Florida Intern.) played his best game of the
tournament. Lennox McCoy (188-G-77, college: Cent.Oklahoma) scored 15 of his
21 in the first half to keep Antigua close. With the win, the USVI clinches
a spot in the semifinals.

USVI: Victor 17+11reb, Sheppard 16, White 15, Thomas 15, Richards
12+10reb+5blk, Bell 7, Oliver 4, Langellier 3, Hodge 2
Horacio Llamas capped a sensational performance by a hitting a free throw
with 10 seconds left in overtime to give Mexico a 92-91 win over the Virgin
Islands. The Virgin Islands had sent the game into overtime on a Kevin
Sheppard basket with 10 seconds left in regulation, but missed several
chances to win before the buzzer. In the extra session Mexico pulled out to
a 91-87 lead, but baskets from Sheppard and Marcus Oliver brought the USVI
back again, setting up Llamas' heroics. Adam Parada contributed some crucial
points and rebounds for Mexico down the stretch. For the Virgin Islands
Cuthbert Victor had a double-double but struggled with 6/19 shooting, and
Raja Bell was again disappointing, going 1/9 from the field and turning the
ball over 5 times. Both teams clinch semifinal berths if they win tomorrow.
Day 1, June 17, 2003: US Virgin Islands - Costa Rica
98-66
USVI: Sheppard 19 (5x3)+8ast, Thomas 16, Victor 14, Bell 10, Langellier 9,

Costa Rica: Smith 21 (5x3), Martinez 12, Planes 10, Gardener 9+12reb,
McDougall 9, Simmons 5
Costa Rica stayed close early, trailing just 21-19 after the first quarter.
Foul trouble forced Henry Martinez (185-G/F-75) and Hernold Gardener to the
bench early in the second, and the USVI's offense heated up, racing out to a
52-35 halftime lead. Kevin Sheppard (182-G-79) (182-G-79) (7 assists by
halftime) and Cuthbert Victor (195-G-83) (12 first half points) keyed the
second quarter rally. Both teams stumbled through much of the second half as
the USVI gradually extended their lead, eventually pulling away as Carl
Thomas (200-F-76, college: Charleston) scored 14 of his 16 points in the
half. Raja Bell (196-F/G-76, agent: Rudoy Herb, college: Florida Intern.) of
the Dallas Mavericks was not a major factor, hitting just 2 of 7 shots on
his way 10 points. Clifford Smith scored 21 points for Costa Rica, but poor
shooting (24/78) was their undoing. The USVI shot an excellent 11/23 on
three-pointers, Sheppard hitting all five of his attempts.
